Harness & going on walks
 
So, my new baby boy Winston is just barely 8 weeks old.
I've been trying SO hard to get him to go on walks but he just hates the harness and walking idea!! He'll just sit down and stare at me when I put him on the ground.

Will this get better as he gets older?

I've been trying to use treats to lure him down the hallway while he's on his leash, but he's not all that interested in his treats either so he'll just stay sitting!! I can't win! lol


Does anyone have any help./ advice they can give on getting their babies to learn to go on walks?

I'm dying to take him to the park to play but he's just not having it :(

It took Kona a bit of time to get used to her harness, but now, whenever they see the harness they know it is time to go out for a walk. Just keep putting it on throughout the day and soon enough Winston will be used to it.

By the way...chattiesmom makes super comfy silk step-in harnesses!

awww okay maybe I'll just keep putting him in it and get him used to it. I was thinking it was because he's just so young. It's going to take some time.

I'm gonna strap it on and take him to the grass today and just keep doing that and hopefully he'll learn to love it !!! :D

I wish we lived closer, I'd bring Winston over for a play date! haha

He will definately get used to it. Try putting the harness on throughout the day and let him get used to the harness before you attach the leash. When it's time to start attaching the leash, walk around your house and get him used to it before you venture outside. Good luck!

It's quite common at that age. First, just get him used to the harness. Put it on, then feed him or give him treats. Tell him how beautiful he looks, then take it off. Repeat numberous times until he seems comfortable with it.

Then, attach a leash and just let him drag it around. Use the above treatment until he gets used to it. Only once he's comfortable with dragging the leash should you try to pick up the other end.

ahh good idea.

Yeah I tried walking him around the house yesterday but he started pulling in the other direction lol. He didn't like it at all.





Question: what do you all use for treats?

The breeder supplied some Gerber baby hot dogs, and said do NOT feed him any other treats when he's a baby besides those..but honestly, he's not a huge fan of them!!!

Cheerios are a great yorkie training tool because they are tiny and crunchy and yorkies seem to love 'em. Honey nut cheerios are good, too.

Ooooh. that's a good idea. And they won't harm their tummies?

The breeder put the fear of God into me about feeding ANY human food to my Yorkie!!

I'm paranoid about stuff now lol

I KNOW!! Well when you take another road trip to So Cal you'll have to bring Winston with you. And then I'll take a, long overdue, road trip to So Cal with my 2.

It's been too long since I've seen you as it is!!
I have a feeling we'll be seeing each other at weddings next time probably lol

Kona and Bernie also love carrots. I would use those as treats as well as cheerios.

apples too - they know whenever I'm cutting carrots or an apple. They come right over to me in the kitchen. I think they recognize the sound of the knife when it cuts.
