Using Puppy Pads Does anyone use puppy pads for potty training or all the time? We are having a hard time training Sophie to use potty outside. I'm sure a lot of it is us not taking her outside enough, but when she's out she doesn't understand what she's out there for. She would much rather watch cars and people and lay in the grass. Any tips would be appreciated. :) |
I use them in Xena's pen while we are away, but then she goes outside all the other times.:) |
Cali and Pixie are pad trained only. Cali will not go outside Pixie has gone outside a few times. The one downside I have found is they seem to go more since they can go anytime. They don't seem to learn to hold it for long period of times. It is convenient though if you are gone you don't have to worry about getting them outside,. |
Maddie goes outside and she uses her potty pads inside. I would recommend staying outside longer with Sophie. Long enough so that she needs to potty. Then make a really big deal, praising her, when she does potty outside. |
Shelby& Seymour will do both...... but they use the pads more often. I wish I would have been persistent when they were puppies, so they would go outside more often. |
Taylor is piddle pad trained. It's a plus in so many ways, but a bit expensive. We can take him on boat trips, hotels, and when we are at our condo in Chicago I don't have to see the neighbors in the elevator at 5 a.m. But he won't potty outside at all. I have to carry a "Diaper Bag". For us, this works out ok, but I do wish that he would relieve himself sometimes in the grass. Instead he will HOLD IT until he gets to a pad. We have replaced carpet many times over the years with our dogs mistakes. I guess that the cost of piddle pads is not going to come close to the carpet cost. |
All 3 go on potty pads. Being in Fl I didn't want them to step on a fire ant mound by mistake. Now we have treated our yard & were getting ready to finish off the back yard. I hope I can train them to go outside also. They won't on their walks at all, they'll hold it. We are tiling the rest of our house, do to accidents. |
Give her a treat for using potty outside, immediately when she does it so she truly understands what she is getting treated for. |
originally we were going to train tobey to go outside because we were first time owners and thought that all dogs need to go outside....BOY have a changed my perspective!! First of all, we got him in January and it was snowing that day, so when I set this tiny puppy in the snow, he looked up at me as if to say "You mean woman, pick me back up! I'm shivering to death!" :snow: He had no clue what to do. so we trained him to potty pads thinking that after the winter was over, we'd get him to go outside. Now, 3 months later, I don't think i will ever train him to go outside. my mom thinks it is wrong and that all dogs need to pee outside, but I love it that in the middle of the night he will hop off the bed and go potty on his pad and then come back to bed and I just get to keep sleeping!!! That is worth the cost (only about $13 for 50 pads at walmart) and changing them once every morning. But that's just my experience....Good luck! |
I started out with both the pads and going outside. I still keep a pad down for when I am away. However, my pup now prefers to go outside. He holds himself until I come home. The pads were great in the beginning when my pup was young because he used the bathroom more often. I believe it is a matter of preference and works for you. |
Tink is pad trained. I use both the disposable and the reusable ones depending on my mood, her stomach, and the day's activities. It was winter when I got Tink also. She just cried and cried when I tried to take her out, so I decided it would be easier and kinder to let her use the pads. Kinder to both of us as as ketters12 said in her post.:D I have thought about training her to go outside as well. We'll see what this summer brings.:) |
Here's my theory...I have trained my dogs in the past to go potty on command. Their command was "Hurry" I am now training my new little Yorkie to use pee pads because the weather has been yucky and cold here in Maine. I am using the command with him when he goes potty so I am hoping that when I decide to start training him to go outside also when the weather gets nice, that he will go outside because he knows the command "Hurry". Hopefully it will work!:) |
I started Kodak on the pads, but every morning tried to take him out around the same time so he would pee. I would literally wake him up and put him outside. He is fully trained outside but will use the pad if I am gone for a full day. Most of the time he will hold it, but I say go peepee or go potty and he goes out to use it. I then shake his treat back and give him 1/2 a treat for using it. He still goes out in the winter to use it. Kamari is 5mos old and she is still getting use to the pads. I try to put her outside to, but things have been so crazy here, I haven't been consistant with her. It seems like when they go outside they think it's play time not pee time. lol I take her poop off the pad and throw it in the grass. If she smells it, she usually uses it then. |
I kept Dallas in an ex-pen for a while with the potty pads. Once I started letting him run around the kitchen, I laid a pad by the door. The more free roam I gave him, I'd stick pads around the dining room and by the back door. Also, I would take him out quite often. Now, I leave 2 pads by the back door and he uses them pretty well. We do have the occasional accident but if he has one, it's usually right by the pad and not on it. It's seldom that he does that and I don't scold him for it since he had the general area right. Training takes lots of time. Even my 3 year old will potty in the house if it's raining outside or we have a heavy dew on the grass. I'm just convinced that this breed of dog is just plain stubborn!:D |
