I live in an apartment and got Ralfie in the end of December, so pad training him has worked out really great. But we also walked him at least once a day from the beginning, and he's equally comfortable going outside in the grass. I'm hoping to eventually train him to completely go outside once we move to a house in August, but if we have to stick with a combination with pads forever, I really won't mind. Like others have said, they are very convenient in icky weather, traveling, late at night, etc. So it's really whatever works best for you in your situation.:) |
Holly uses potty pads. |
Jake uses the pads because I got him in the fall, and I didn't want to take him outside until he was bigger. |
I didn't realize some use the potty pads all the time. I'd only thought they were used for training. But that's got to beat waking up at 3 am when it's -30 out to let the puppy out :) My lab potty trained pretty easily. I've heard/read that yorkies can be harder to train. Is there any reason for it? |
I trained Minnie on the pads and I'm so happy about it. She relieves herself whenever she feels like it and it's great cause I don't have to worry about taking her out when I'm not at home. She also goes outside when I walk her, and that was something she picked up on her own. But since your puppy won't go outside on the grass, this is a tip I heard from a friend: When your puppy pees, soak the pee in a newspaper and take it outside immediately, along with your puppy. Place the soaked newspaper on the grass and let your puppy smell it. Repeat this a couple of times/days and hopefully it will be a success.. :goodluck: to you. |
Harley uses both the potty pads as well as goes outside..... When I am at my apartment she uses the potty pads the majority of the time, but at my parents house we just let her outside she goes and does her business then comes right back in. |
