Why does everybody say....? So I am supposed to get my puppy in about 1 1/2 months and it seems like everybody I've talked to says that yorkies are SO hard to potty train. My only focus this summer is potty training I have a plan that I got from a yorkie book but I'm already starting to get worried because of what so many people say, and I don't even have her yet! What do you all think? |
I wouldnt worry about what you have heard. Some are harder to train than others. It just takes persistance. They are definitely worth it |
Mine was a breeze to train. Guess I was lucky. We had him since he was 3 months old and he knows how to go to the litter box from day one and had only 3-4 mistakes in the first month and that was it. Another yorkie owner I spoke with also agreed that his was easy to train. I guess it really depends on individual puppies rather than the breed. |
Each one is different. Cali trained quickly when I got her at 9 weeks. Pixie was 13 months old when I got her and not potty trained at all. She trained pretty quickly but we still catch her peeing on the carpet more times than I would like! |
We got our little girl when she was 10 weeks old, and she finally was potty trained by one year. However, we dealt with kidney failure in the first three weeks we had her. Anyway, she is more stubborn than not trained. She hates wet grass. She will tell us most of the time when she needs to go out, but she will also sneak around. She is nearly six. I find it is more of a behavior issue than actually being trained since she certainly was easy to teach everything else. :animal36 |
It is definitely alot of work.......... It takes alot of time & patience. Your little one will have to be taken out every 15min. to 1/2 hour. Crate training is a must, when you cannot watch her she goes in the crate. Do not give her opportunities to go in the house. Just always take her out and praise her when she is done. Keep her in the kitchen where you can wipe up those accidents. I got Cuddles at 8 weeks, and she was trained fully at 6-7 months. She always goes outside. Again I say it is a full time job, a ton of work, but it is worth it in the end. Cuddles has never peed or pooped on my carpets. God Bless |
i have not had a bit of trouble training him and he is my first dog so i was just learning everything too. |
Yorkies CAN be hard to potty train, but so can poodles, bichons, matlese, Golden Retrievers etc. Point being, it really depends on the owners dedication, persistence and such as well as the individual dog. DO your research (sounds like you have) and have a plan, have a backup plan incase that ones doesn't work! I have a larger Yorkie so he started out litterbox trained but is now fully trained to the outside. I have a new Biewer puppy he is almost 6mos (I got him at almost 5mos) he is doing good. I've had a few accidents (mainly my fault), and he is being crate trained and ONLY to outside. Little dogs are hard in the sense often you can potty train them but they are not good at telling you WHEN they need to go outside. I just run my dogs out every hr or so, I go out and MAKE sure they do go. There are instances where even after a year a dog isn't trained, and then some that are fully trained much earlier, just depends. I would say potty training and getting through the puppy stage in general is the most difficult, fun, and rewarding time. You will want to cry in frustration, and laugh out of pure joy.. Kathy |
I'm sure all dogs are hard to potty train. Even human toddlers are hard to potty train. It just depends on your puppy. I got scared too. I think that if you have a plan, then you are already 1/4 of the way towards your goal. Holly has been really good. She has accidents once in a while, but for the most part I think she does great. The key is consistency I think. Sometimes when it seems they have it down completely, they could potentially regress. Overall, every puppy is different, but if you stick to your plan then you should do great. Good Luck and let us know how it goes. |
I think I have 2 boys that are 1.5 years old and still not NEARLY potty trained!!! Lord help me! They are WAAAYYY harder to potty train than any other dog Ive ever owned!! But you'll be fine Im sure... Im a single woman who works full time. I just don't have the time or money to send them to school or be diligent enough to train them! |
:yorkietal :yorkietal Sir Spike will be 1 in may and he's is doing great he was easy.... but I think Princess Mia she might to harder to do but she is still very young at 4 mos > Just be patient and always take them out after they eat & sleep I just take her out like every hour so she will get the clue lol Good Luck No mater how many accident's they have they are totally worth it Very loving, great companionship, good bed snugglers and Your best friend :yorkietal :yorkietal :yorkietal |
My Trixie was easy to train. She was almost completely trained at about 6 months. Pia was harder but I got her when she was older so I blame the breeder :p Good Luck to you and don't let others scare you :) |
Rhapsody was easy to train. She was already crate trained, so it was just a matter of using the crate at night, and if we were gone from the house for an hour or two. Then I'd take her out every two hours; also her I'm about to go potty signals were very easy to spot. Tiger has been more difficult. He hates his crate (when the door is closed); it's his refuge and where he stores his toys and bones when the door is open. So night time was always difficult; he'd cry and cry (we tried the crate at night for 2 months, and he'd cry half the night). Finally we gave up the crate at night; we had to sleep. Now he's pretty good; still has accidents though. Especially if I vacumn; I try to make sure he's always outside before I vacumn. . . he thinks it's a monster, and no, we've never chased him with it, lol. (I've actually had people ask me that before.) So it definately depends I think on the Yorkie and also the kind of home/environment they come from. |
Don't stress yourself out about it ahead of time. That's was I did before Sadie came home - I was a nervous wreck by the time I got her because I'd never had such a small dog before and because of all the housebreaking horror stories I'd heard. She's 11 months old and been 90% puppy pad trained for about 5 months. You and your little puppy will be just fine!!! I'll just take a little time....... :p |

yes its hard, but they will finally get it.,. of course they will have slip ups, but thats what they do.. im single and traine lexi by myself.. how hard could it be.. i think the hardest part is giving them sooooooooo much attention that they need.. i do it, but oh boy im tired |
Read up on it here - there are so many great threads and advice. Also, ask the breeder how she is eliminating right now - is she in her own area, is she in one big area w/ other pups where they go potty wherever, is she using pads at all etc etc. |
It can be trying. At the same time they are so wonderful. You'll do fine!:) :) :) |
potty training My girl was easy to potty train. I started out training her to a tray with a potty pad, one in my bathroom and one in the laundry room. Everytime she went, I gave her a cookie, now she pees and poops when I go to the bathroom just to get another cookie. She will also pee on demand if I say Potty potty! It took about 3 weeks of consistancy, putting her in the try every hour during the day and once at night. Good Luck |

Thanks everyone for all the great insight! I really enjoy reading how you all handle your babies! I can't wait to get her! I'm so excited!!! |
I've always heard that too, but it really does depend on the dog, the method of training you use, and being able to devote lots of time in the beginning. I have been very lucky with mine, he was really easy to potty train. |
I do think Yorkie's are a little hard to train. Mine sleep in a crate in the laundry room at night. I pull a blanket over the crates so it is darker and they are fine. If they are tired, I go to look for them when I'm going to bed and often find them back in their crates. When Savannah was a puppy, I took her out about every 1/2 hour, then spread to an hour, not it's every two hours. She can hold it a long time. The puppy is about 11 months old and she still has a lot of accidents if I get busy and forget the 2 hours is up. Neither one will go to the door or bark, so it's me that is trained! It's just one can hold it longer than the other one, so she has fewer accidents. I can tell Savannah go TT and she knows what I mean. If I tell her to go Poo poo, she knows what that means. I'm not sure Kayli has caught on to that yet, but I read somewhere that you should call it by name when they do it and then they will learn to do it on command. I have mostly hardwood and tile flooring, so it hasn't been a big problem. They usually go in the same spot in the dining room. Good luck. |
are you having trouble with them like going in heat? |
I'm not sure who you were responding to, but I'll answer from my standpoint. Savannah went into heat at about 7 months. You should never breed a dog on their first heat. I waited until her second heat, which was about 7 months after that and then I bred her. I bred her to a Yorkie that was only CKC registered and I lost a sale of a puppy because she wasn't AKC. I didn't know any better when I bred her, but I do now. We just bred her again with an AKC Yorkie and I expect these puppies to be adorable. The male was just under 3 lbs. Normally Savannah is 4 lbs., but she's gotten a little chubby. I'm changing her diet to get her back down to 4 lbs. where she's supposed to be. She had 3 puppies the first time I bred her, but one was born dead, so only two lived. All 3 were little girls. I hope she has little girls this time, too! I may keep one of them. I printed out a lot of stuff on the internet about what to expect and I was very prepared for the births. She had them exactly on the 63rd day, starting around 11:00 p.m. and ending at 4:30 a.m. |
They're all different Quote:
My last Yorkie was pee-pad trained within a month of bringing her home. :D I had no idea Yorkies were supposed to be hard to train, so I didn't realize how lucky I was at the time. My current Yorkie will be one year old on June 6th and he is not at all trained yet. I'm starting to wonder if he will ever learn, to be honest. :( If he's in his gated area, he uses the pad...but give him free reign in the house and he'll pee/poo in every room except the one he's supposed to use. It's very frustrating. But I do think they are all different since my last Yorkie couldn't have been easier to train. Good Luck with your new puppy. |
I agree I have had two Yorkies & they have both been extremely difficult to potty train for me. |
Its not always horrible, sometimes you get lucky! When Wobie came home a week ago, I was surprised to get an 8 week old 99% pottytrained puppy. He's only had 1 accident, and that was on the first day when he was getting used to his new home.I was worrying just like you, but now I know all my worrying was pointless! :D |
