I don't know where Maryville is, but here in Minnesota the weather is getting beautiful out!!!! And Scruffy loves the outside. So (especially on weekends) have her outside with you running around. I think the more they are allowed outside, the more pottying they will do outside, and then the OUTSIDE will become natural for them to eliminate. Scruffy loves sunning on our deck, so I got a baby gate to block the steps so he can't leave when I don't watch him (it's in our backyard) I check on him every 5 min or so........but he is usually just sunning or looking around..........loving it. He has a bowl of water with him out there, and he will drink it. I also got a corkscrew hooky think to hook a leash onto when we (the kids etc...) are outside and he lays around watching us, but has the outside to go the bathroom. He is newly potty trained at 4 months (he's been trained for about 2 weeks now) and I think a lot of it has to do with him being outside a LOT more. GOOD LUCK!!! |
I love your schedule. Sophie is 4 months old and pees or poops at night and constantly needs baths. Is it ok for them to eat in their crate? I've heard good and bad things about that. |
I don't feed mine in the crate. I do, however, let him drink water. To avoid spillages from a bowl, I recommend using a large ferret or guinea pig bottle that hangs from the cage. He licks the end and it dispenses water. In the morning when I put him in the crate before work, I toss a treat into the crate and he eagerly goes in for it, so I never place him in the crate - he goes in himself. Once the door is closed, I praise him and give him another treat (these are very little kibbles). He will whine and yelp for about 10 minutes after I leave through the front door (I tested it) and then he gets quiet and goes to sleep. When I come home for lunch to take him out to potty, (You should be willing to sacrifice your lunch for your pup...I drive 25 minutes each way to take him out at lunch), I take him out and once he potties, I hold him and sit on the couch with him and play with him until I have to head back out to work and put him back in the crate....that way he feels like I've spent some time with him. I should point out that I don't intend to keep him crated forever - just as a pup. Once he adjusts to our schedule and his bladder muscles are more developed, and he's officially potty trained, I will leave the crate door opened and he can just use it as his "room". |
Thanks for the good info! |
Wow, this sounds like my Zoey. She did this too when she was little. I feel your frustrations also! She would go pee and then run and go pee somewhere else in the smallest puddles! I will say by 6 months we had stopped this completely. Do you use potty pads? For awhile until she got older we had to take water away after a certain time too, she was peeing in bed like this. |

keep up with the schedule and pretty soon your baby will be fully trained... |
Well I think we're making some progress, yesterday she started sniffing around the front door so I took her out and she pooped! And then this morning she went outside and peed like she hadn't peed in a week, and then pooped again! So maybe we're getting somewhere! |
You can always tell when they have to pee because the sniff the floor a bit faster than usual "investigative" sniffing and they usually go round in circles. When you see her doing that, just pick her up and bring her out. |
Hi, this is my first time posting, but have been a reader for a few months. We are having the same problems with our yorkie (cookie). He is 4 months old. When we first got him (at about 2 months) he caught on to the potty training thing immediately.. for the first month he was going on the pad about 80% of the time. Now all this has changed. He will be standing near his pee pad then walk the opposite direction and pee on the floor. He seems to wait till we are not looking and go somewhere else to pee and poo. A good example is last night, we played , went for a short walk, he slept on my lap, all evening.. I went out for 15 min to meet my wife and when we came back, he had peed and poo'ed on the floor. It is like he is waiting till we are not looking or around to do it. Any advice would be great. Frustrated in Korea. :) |
We're having similiar problems Hi. My yorkie had similiar problems, constantly peeing in small amounts. This may be a sign of a urinary tract infection, as was the case with our puppy. Our vet did a urinalysis test and the white blood cell count came back very high so we put him on anitbiotics for 10 days. We take our puppy out a lot but we also bought one of those "diapers" at Petsmart. There are different ones for males and females. We have a male, and the diaper is a piece of material that goes around his waist, we put a maxi pad (a lot cheaper than the expensive liners they sell at Petsmart) in the material in case he has any accidents. It works for us and we don't use it all the time. |
I have the same problem but I do have one (yes, just one;) ) tip for you. I read somewhere that you shouldn't put any towels/blankets in the crate because they like peeing on anything that will absorb it. Again, I have the same problem when I left the blanket in the crate as well as when I took them out. |
Hmm. Well she's pretty much stopped pooping in her crate, but she still pees in it, and maybe it is because of the blanket in there. I just thought it might make her comfy, but I can totally understand why it might help her pee and not lay in it haha. I'll try taking it out tonight and see what happens. |
