Potty training a puppy outside Mylittle Mia will be 9 weeks old when I pick her up. (I will be getting her on Monday). It is pretty cold outside snow/rain. Is she too young to train to use the bathroom outside or should I start right away. I know she will have had her first shots but can she get sick from cold weather? :aimeeyork |
Welcome to YT! Make sure your vet OK's the puppy being outside. Sometimes, even if they don't have contact with other dogs, they can pick up diseases from water or animal dropings outside (even though I live 10 minutes from Manhattan, I saw raccoons in our fenced in yard!). Hopefully the weather will be getting better soon but for now, make sure your put some nice sweater or coat on the pup. My vet advised me against taking Pepper out until he was 3 months or so (even in closed yard), I wish you good luck potty training, sometimes it can be a challenge  |
My Chase is just 11 weeks yesterday, and it's been so cold here too. So I decided to wait until after he's 12 weeks and has all his shots. By then the weather should be changing. However, it was a freakish 71 degrees this afternoon. |
We started letting Maci outside right away after she had her shots because we wanted her to be trained to go outside instead of using the pee pad method. She was perfectly fine, and has been doing excellent even with the horrible Minnesota Winter! She knows when she's getting cold, and then she wants in! :p We're very proud of our little girl because she picked up the training very fast (2 weeks) and we haven't had any accidents in the house since, which has been 7 months now! :D |
My experience with trying to train them to go outside when it is cold, has never been good. they stand at my feet and shiver or they run to the door. I prefer to use the pee pads until the weather gets nicer. TJCyhorkie, If you've had her for 7 months then she was trained before the weather got cold. That is entirely different than trying to train a puppy in the cold. |
My Mia was a Christmas puppy! We started taking her outside right away. I found that if the weather wasn't so good it just made her take card of buiness quicker:thumbup: Now at 18 weeks she is almost 100% housetrained!! |
potty training My 1st Yorkie is a little over a year now and he has finally mastered the art of going outside and holding it till he goes outside and now he is even barking at the door to go! We have come a LONg way! ha but i got him a sister last week and she is 4 mos old. She apparently has had some training b.c she voluntarily pees on newspapers ... so i brought out the pee pads again and she will use them MOST of the time.. the other times , she will pee on the couch, in the bedm or on people and i cant figure out why or how to encourage her to always use the pad.. she poos in the bathroom on the floor. Dont know why or how to encourage her to go on the pee pad? She has no qualms going in her crate for some reason .. Anyway , kind of a long post.. sorry but anyone have pointers for where to start with a 4 month old pup and how to get her to go in same spot for #1 and #2? |
I would just like to thank everyone for their comments..I feel more comfortable now... I am a new Yorkie Owner and a bit nervous. I am a new parent that wants to do everything right. I can't wait to hold her (getting her on Monday)!!! |
YOu will love that dog like nothing you have ever had! Getting my babies was the best decision I ever made... they are a very special breed! Congrats new mommy! |
My Yorkie is 8 weeks next week and he does pee on the pads, no so lucky with number 2's but getting there slowly:) |

I agree TOTALLY!!! We had 20's the first few weeks we had my boy, and he learned pretty fast to get done with his business. A few weeks after we got him we had BELOW ZERO weather for almost 2 weeks, and he would go outside (I would stand there with him, suffering too:D ) and he would go SOOO fast just to get back inside. He is abou 14 weeks old and he is doing AWESOME. I still watch him like a hawk, but he knows what to do when we go outside. |
Yes how was Maci trained -- we will try anything because Ludo just is not getting it! He wont let us know he has to go out -- pees on the couch, bed, wherever he wants. |
How does everyones dogs go outside?? Do you CARRY them? My little boy has to go out a deck and down about 10 steps (which he JUST MASTERED 3 days ago) but ONE thing I learned from someone ON THIS BOARD, is if you want your dog to go to the door............your dog should actually GO TO THE DOOR himself every time you take him/her out. I don't know about you guys, but I have ALWAYS carried my dog to the door (picking him up in varying places in our house....ex-pen, middle of the living room, from the couch etc...) and he would NOT understand that he is actually GOING to the door to go outside. When he comes IN he ALWAYS goes up my deck steps to the door to come in, but I have always carried him to the OUTSIDE to do his business...........so lately I have been working on walking him to the door and saying "lets go potty"..........I am seriously thinking of the bell SOON. |
We just got a new Yorkie, though she isn't a puppy but is nearly a year old. I think she used to go on pads but wasn't completely trained with any method. We have been taking her outside with Loki who is housetrained. While the weather is not ideal, we put her coat on her and take her out. So far we have had a lot of success. We got Loki this time of year 2 years ago and he also went outside from the beginning. Winter is cold but at least there aren't as many distractions like sticks and leaves. Unless you have standing water or allow your dog to eat things I think you are totally fine. |
