pennies in a can? how does that work? coco whines a lot during the day and i was thinking about using that, but im not sure how that works. |
anybody? |
what is she whining about? |
Hi there! I have never had to do this but I have read other posts of members that have. You put pennies in a can..like and altoids can and, when the puppy whines you shake the can. The noise makes them stop or, it's supposed to. I have also been told to clap your hands very loud and this will distract the pup also. I tried this and all it did was give me sore hands! lol Maybe if you take a rolled up paper and smack the crate this will help with the night whining |

have you tried a squirt bottle? probably easier to squirt her from the bed instead of throwing the can of pennies and then having to retreive it every time. |

Wow the pennies in a can sounds like a good plan. Ferdinand has been barking allllll night long, so we got him a bark collar (NOT a shock collar). It beeps a really high pitched loud noise whenever he barks. But it was like $50. Maybe I should take the collar back and try this inexpensive alternative with the pennies!! |

The pennies didn't work for us...and we're on our second anti-bark device (non-shocking, of course-just noisy!). What DID work to get Emma quiet at night when she was a puppy was hitting measuring spoons on the door of her crate! Someone else posted that yorkies HATE the sound of metal on metal, so one night at 3:30 am I was FED UP! I went to the kitchen and grabbed the first thing I could find-my grandmother's old stainless steel measuring spoon set, and banged it on the door of Emma's crate. Boy did that work! She was so quiet I was actually worried about her-but we all slept soundly after that! |
I tried the cans of pennies but Gucci barks at it. I tried the spray bottle and she stops barking for a bit and starts again. She only barks when she feels someone at the door or at my daughter's toys. SO I grab Gucci tell her NO, and she usually stops. I just need any advise for when she is in the barking moood, which is rare. What I do know is holder until she calms down. But then what I do when Im not home? |
I use the pennies in a pop can. (rinse it first, LOL). I pick it up by the top, so as to cover the top of the can (dont want the pennies to go flying), give it a really hard shake (once), saying NO at the same time. this technique has not completely stopped them from barking but it certainly has slowed them down. Mine don't bark at night unless they hear something. Until I see just what they are barking at,... I dont' want them to stop barking. so our problem is a little different than your whining problem. I have issues with the spray bottle. I tried that method with Ahia and now every time she sees a spray bottle (like her leave in conditioner) she runs from me. so.... in my opinion, I wish I had never tried that one. |
ok i tried the pennies in a can last night, and it didnt work at all. she just kept on whining more, i think it might have scared her. i'm going 2 try the metal on metal 2night. |
Is there a reason she can not sleep with you? It is obvious she does not want to be left alone in the crate! Scaring her is not going to help it might only make her stressed. |

like the above poster said, i would just wait it out.... it will take some time but she will eventually learn to quit whining. it took harley a few nites, then i started hitting the top of his crate and telling him "hush!, nite nite time" in a real stern voice. now when i put him in, i tell him its nite nite time and i do not hear a peep till i get up the next morning. |

i agree with letting her whine it out. Morgan never whined in her cage so i was lucky. Its gonna be hard but you have to ignore her. she will eventually stop whining once she realizes your not gonna let her out. |
I dont think the pennies in a can is a good idea, i recently used it to stop Duchess from barking when playing with her toys, obviously she is going to bark a bit through excitement but she goes non stop! i started using the can, all it did was scare her so much she wouldn't play with her toys, in fear of the can coming out! i think she thinks that she isn't allowed to play with the toys, when actual fact its the barking i want her to stop. But i deffinatley wouldnt advise using that technique on a young puppy |

Hey Gorjess, I'm pretty sure Coco is whining because she's SO young and unaccustomed to being away from her mom and littermates. Have you tried those stuffed animal looking things that have a heartbeat like her mom? I'm drawing a blank for the name but I know other users on here would be able to name it. And do you have a heating pad in her crate? She's still adjusting to being at home with you. And how much exercise is she getting during the day? She's too young to walk outside, but maybe you could run around inside with her before bedtime to tucker her out. I know this is rough on you now and that you're longing for a good night's sleep, but it'll get better!! |
Oh, I should add that I don't think that pennies in a can is going to solve the problem here. I only use that when Howie's being a big BRAT. Like if he's defiantly running around barking at me for no reason other than to get attention. Coco seems scared, not bratty! |
The pennies in the can thing just made my dogs bark that much more lol |
