how does your yorkie signal when she/he has to go potty? I have been having success with my yorkie going potty outside, but it's only because I take her out every few hours. How did you teach your dog to signal to you that he/she needs to go outside? Mine doesn't do it yet. I'm almost afraid to just wait and see because she might start going on the floor again. My boyfriend tried with his dog to use a bell attached near the door, but his dog just rings it whenever he wants to play outside so he removed it. |
Poochie bells. You have to be patient with puppies and let them go through a short stage where they will ring, ring, ring it. But if mine wants outside just to play, that's alright. I know she likes the nice weather and enjoys being outside. She doesn't ring it except when she wants to go out to play or to go potty now.:) |
we use the bells and Chance is very consistent with using the bells and going out to potty. He has his days though when he wants to ring the bells every three mins. But that is few and far between and when he does that I know that he has already gone potty and I just ignore him or redirect his attention to something else. The bells work good for us. And not our older boy Remmy uses them sometimes as well when he really needs to go! |
hehe...she doesn't...she just goes on her pad if I don't take her in time. I tried the bell too & it didn't work for me either. |
Ringing a bell works great for us, but then I don't mind letting Joey out "just to play". |

I tried the bells too, but Coco was afraid of it. Coco will sit in font of the door that leads to the back yard. She does that when she wants to play and potty. I have to take her out at all times b/c i can't tell if she want to play or potty. My problem; if your are not in the same room with her, there's no way of knowing that she is sitting awaiting to be let out:mad: . She will not bark to alert you that she is at the door. Coco is always in eye sight at home to enforce the housetraining.:animal-pa |
We just built an outdoor area for Jaxon and hoping he'll really get the poochie bells now. He also had to be 'reminded' before but it wasn't an ideal set up. He's always been a little too polite about asking to go out. |
Rocky barks to get our attention, then when we get up he runs to the door, but keeps looking back at us to make sure we follow him. |

Trixie starts crying a little. I know her schedule pretty well, so when she starts whining around her potty time, I know it's time to take her out. And sometimes I'll ask her: "do you got to go potty?" And when she does, she'll tilt her head! |
I have the same issue, I have started crate training Oliver for a few days now and it has really cut down on our stress level. I felt really bad leaving him in the crate (i work from home) but the Vet assured me that he would not feel abandoned. That it is like a den for them. I do have the problem of when i let him out of the crate for his 100% supervised play time, he will sometimes pee right on the carpet and that is kinda frustrating cause I only take him out like what feels like all day, lol. I can't tell when he wants to go out too much yet. We keep him on the couch with us, chewing his bone and when he wants off the couch, he whines and whines so we know it is either water or he wants out. So we usually take him out for good measure. Just in case. I wish I could tell when he wants to too. |

I was lucky with Mojo because when we got him, I worked in an office that I was allowed to bring him, so going outside started early for him....now, I am at home all the time, so he knows what to do.....plus, I like to get outside, so I am always taking him along when I go work in the yard or walk or whatever. |
I used to use the bells attached to the door but My Tiffany quickly picked up that she goes outside and comes back in she gets a cookie. So, she was ringing the bell to go outside, I would let her out. She would walk to the end of the deck, sit there for a few minutes and then turn around and come back inside. Then she would demand her cookie, she followed me around the house barking her head off for her cookie. Funny, I can train dogs, Im pretty good at it but... I cannot train my own dogs they have me trained lol |

She sure is very cute. Very smart too, You can see her sometimes sitting there trying to figure something out and she always will figure it out |
romeo hops up on my lap and rubs his paw on my face. |
Bella goes NUTS when she has to do number 2. It was concerning the first few times, but now that I know what it means it is a great warning. |
Ok, i had the potty training sussed with Izzie. She used to come and get me and sort of dance between me and the door when she wanted to go out. Now we've got Tamzyn obviously she tinkles on the floor cos shes only 9 weeks old but Izzie..... who quite frankly should know better has now taken to peeing anywhere. Cos the problem is when she used to disappear you used to know she needed to go potty, now you can't tell if she wants a wee or wether shes just avoiding Tamzyn and guarding her stuff. Some lovely people on YT told me about Poochie bells, so we ordered one and had it shipped to the UK, now can anyone tell me what i do if they are quite frankly afraid of the bells?????? |
Mine doesn't so I just let her out every hour or so. |
I sooo wanted to train Punkin to ring a bell but she was scared of it :( She now will whine/cry a little bit when she needs to go out. The more of an 'emergency' it is the louder she gets and will bark if she needs to, to get her point across. We've only had one problem with relying on this method. We had her in the cart at home depot. She made one little cry and that was it. We thought she wanted up, but we ignored her and continued to shop. As we are walking and pushing the cart I realise that she was squatting in the cart. She left a trail of pee dribble for about 20 + feet behind us. I was soooo embarrassed. :embarasse Guess we both need a bit more training! |
My mom told me if you always take them out the same door they will go to that door when they have to potty. Well Logan is super smart & knows all the doors to outside so he goes to one we can see him at so we know he has to go. If he really has to go & we don't get up fast enough, he'll come look at us & then look at the door. If we are in a room where we can't see him at a door he will come find us & look up at us. In cases like this (when he doesn't have a toy) we'll ask him what do you need show me. & then we follow him & he'll take us to the door. He's really a very smart little booger. |

I really believe some people who think they don't work for them do give up too easily. You are supposed to be training your yorkie, not the other way around. Funny thing! When she wants me to come to the room from another part of the house to play, she'll ring the bells! Think the little darlings aren't smart?:D |
Mine has never given me any sign when they have to pee, but they all circle when they have to poo. So, mine are mostly pee pad trained. Maybe if I can get a more convenient fence up, I will try to get them going outside at least part of the time. |

I remain dedicated to 'the bells'!! Just out of curiosity....( cos we obviously don't expect them all to learn at the same speed ) but for anyone out there who is a poochie bell user..... how long roughly did it take your little angels to ring the bells by themselves? :animal-pa |
Oh Man...Just when I thought little Oliver was doing better he wets on the couch...no warning just squat and there ya go! Is anyone else going through this and how do you handle it? I mean I just say "no - outside" and take him out (that is if i catch him). The poop is easier these days cause I feed him only at set times and watch him like a hawk until he goes but the pee...you just never know when he is gonna go...sometimes it is just like a little quarter size but he goes. AArrrgghhh....so frustrating! Patty |
