question about spanking every thing i have read says never spank never hit.....my parents have had dogs since i was a baby and always either spanked them or rubbed their nose in it...another couple we know says that they spanked their yorkie and she learned not to poop inside.....there have been a couple times that addy has bit one of us prety hard and she has gotten a little bop on the head for it....she stopped biting. whats the official word on this and the reasoning? (i know theyre small and delicate.....but a light bop on the head seems to work?) anyone? |
I would not spank. Yorkies are VERY sensitive and a stern NO will almost always sufice. |
I guess it's a personal decision, but I personally would never spank one of my babies. It just doesn't work for me, I'm not for it. I'm so scared of injuring them. I just don't have it in me to spank a 5 pound dog. Plus yorkies are very stubborn and it may not have any affect on them. I used to tap my 130 lb. great dane on his rump, when he misbehaved. But I was so scared of injuring him, that I would do it very lightly,so he always thought I was petting him, and he would move his head by my hands, so I could rub his ears. LOL. I guess I just don't have it in me. |
I don't think theirs anything wrong w/ a light tap but that's my opinion and I'm not going to argue it. Debating about spanking dogs is like debating about spanking human children, or abortion, or politics. Everyone has strong feelings and it's a never ending arguement/debate. Do your research on the topic, then come to a conclusion on your own. W/ huge debates like this it's never good to just go w/ what others feel. You gotta know for yourself and do what you feel is right. People claim that spanking a dog makes him/her fear you. I have yet to find this true, that is if the spanking is a tap vs. a full blown hit. |
I used to spank Chachi not hard for pottying in the house and he started flinching. Thats when I started looking for other ways and started training him |
It all depends i just want to let you know in advance that this is a very touchy subject to some. I don't see a prob with a light tap here and there i mean don't go beat the dog because he pee'd on the floor i use a flyswatter to scare Peeka i don't hit him with it but he knows when i bring it out i mean business some people beleive in it some say absolutly not i'm in between i wouldn't roll up a news paper and hit him but when he bites i do tap his nose with my finger and tell him no. |
I don't spank a dog or rub their nose in messes. Use a stern "no" or "don't". I prefer "don't" cause no rhymes with slow & go, other commands i use in training my dogs. |
It makes a dog afraid.:( |
Well...this does get people thinking and hopefully everyone will offer opinions and no one will come on and say they smack their dogs and it's fine - :thumbdown ....cause it isn't. I don't see anything wrong with a TAP on the nose - a light tap just to get their attention - but that's where I draw the line. I HATE hearing about people rubbing their dogs faces in their 'accidents' ....that is just Totally HUMILATING to the animal - Why would anyone think that works ? Hitting and forcing a dogs face into their own pee just serves to make them cower and be afraid - which leads to more accidents - I never spanked my kids and would never hit an animal - no matter what. Well - take that back - IF I was protecting my girls from another dog - you can bet I'd smack the poop out of it just to get it away. If I ever saw anyone hitting a dog - you can bet I'd be in their face. |
spanking Unless you actually catch the dog making a mistake in the house, it does little good to correct at all. A dog has no idea why you are rubbing it's nose in pee..prevent mistakes with gates and pens, frequent potty breaks, belly bands and panties to prevent the odor from attracting them back to the same area..if you find a stool on the floor, take it outside and put it in an area you want the pup to go..if they are trained to wee pads, put it there for an hour or so..not fun, but they need to be drawn back to the odor of where they went in the past. Correcting for biting is a different matter..have you ever watched how the Dog Whisperer corrects a dog..the same way the dam corrects a pup..you give it a poke or tap on the side of the face or shoulder area..gentle of course. Dams take their paws and do this..they might even make a snapping sound with the teeth like Ceasar does.. |
I think they have pretty much determined that spankingf does no good what so ever as a form of punishment. I give mine a gentle swat to get them out of something that they are not supposed to be into, but I wouldn't call it spanking. As a method of house breaking it's pretty much useless cause by the time you get to them they are finidshed an have run off. Stomp your foot clap your hands and make a loud noise to startle them. It's much more effective. For any other behavior correction, I use the dog whisperers method of a quick touch, and a sound. Just to let them know you don't like what they are doing. |

The only good thing that came from that was that whenever I want her to stop immediately I just say, "stop" and she'll IMMEDIATELY stop in her tracks and turn to look at me.....so spanking DOES work....but mostly out of fear, not necessarily respect :( |
Well i hope no one thinks i hit my dog but i do tap him on the nose when he bites and won't let go and i'm talking a tap just to get his attention and tell him not to do it again i don't beleive it beating a dog but the use of a fly swater does great for me when i need it i don't hit him i smacked the floor by him one time and thats all it took when i bring it out now( which is very rare) he knows to focus on what i'm telling him it's actually really cute he is so attentive trying to see what i'm doing with it LOL but sometimes dogs need a distraction and if it does the trick i say go for it but no i don't beleive you should hit(Beat) your animals. and V i'd be right there with you if i seen someone beat an animal. this is such a touchy subject i hate to even comment on it for fear i will be taken wrong but i know that those of you who know me or have seen my posts know i love my baby and i love YT so i have faith that you all will know what i mean when i say i tap his nose. |
I don't think the question is whether or not spanking works. The question is: WHY SPANK? Spanking, more often than not, does work. I won't argue that. {With one exception: housetraining. Spank a dog for eliminating in the house and what often happens is that the dog still eliminates in the house, but he is careful to hide from you when he is doing it.} BUT, the same lessons can be taught using positive methods. There is absolutely no need to spank. |
When you think about it people are more obedient in countries that are ruled by dictators, when there is always the threat of a violent punishment lurking about their lives. Now, consider the country we all live in. We are ruled too, but its not quite the same, is it? Who is happier? Because in the end I think it is our responsibility to make our pets' lives the happiest it can be. We all get one life. Why make it painful for another poor soul? |
