Rockie is flooding my kitchen daily!! Help My little 7 mo. old has two dishes against the wall; one for food and one for water. While he leaves the food dish alone, daily (and sometimes more often), he will take his paw and clear out all of the water in his dish all over the floor and then take off with the dish. I'm not sure how to curb this. I don't want to take the water away if he gets thirsty later but at the same time I don't want to keep filling it for him to spill out. I thought of the tall self feeding but that didn't work, he just scoops until that's empty and takes off with the whole container---the little devil! Any suggestions???:( |
um have you tried possibly getting a raised dish? depending on your dogs size of course. but this may help and make sure the dishes are made out of plastic and not steel. |
Wow. I thought Boss was the only one! I have his water bowl in the office and there is carpet, so it's not good, but I'm not sure what to do either. Any ideas why they do it? |

They have dishes at PetSmart that are heavy with a rubber type bottom and they are wider at the bottom than at the top. It does keep it from tipping over with the feet. They are the metal ones. |
Loki loves water and he will paw at or flip over his bowl and kick it across the floor, but only when it's empty. He would never waste water :) We ended up with HEAVY ceramic ones for the kitchen and he can't tip those or carry them. Think bowls you'd buy a german shepherd :-) Besides he loves to eat his kibble when it is spread out on the bottom and not piled up. He is weird :animal-pa |
Rockie I'm beginning to think most yorkies are wierd. In addition to the water issue, Rockie likes to take his food into the living room-like it's some type of prey that he's taking back to his den--then he pounces on it before eating it--it's pretty funny to see and I can live with that since he eats it right away with no mess for me----you got to love these pooches. :D |
P.S. I'm going to try to find a ceramic bowl in one of those raised containers. Plastic definitely doesn't work since it's even easier for him to grab and go. Thanks for everyone's advise so far!! ;) |

Try the plastic ones that are weighted down...I have one that when his water bowl is almost empty he will move it all around the kitchen, he is trying to get my attention, & it works...... |
Hee hee hee. I used to have a dog that did that! Never did cure it, I'm sorry to say. I switched to a heavy pottery crock bowl that she couldn't pick up. Didn't stop her from "swimming" in it, though. This same little girl was also the only poop-eater I've ever had. (Another habit I never did break). She wasn't the brightest bulb in the box. |
I'm beginning to feel that way about Rockie--he eats dirt-----why????? I don't get that at all. Drags clumps of it into the house sometimes but basically just lays out and eats it along with worms, small bugs who probably think they are safe from him--quite disgusting--maybe I'll have him trained for sniffing out truffles! Ha Ha!!! |
P.S. Today I went to Petsmart and found a raised two ceramic dish number. So far it's worked although I did catch Rockie trying to get his paw up into the bowl. After I said no, I haven't caught him and his mat that the dish sits on appears to be drying out so I am thinking that it may be working. The bowls are nice because they almost wedge themselves into the dish holder and he can't grab them with his teeth. We'll see....thanks for all of the suggestions--I love that I can get on this website and asked crazy questions and others have been in my shoes!! I love my Yorkie!!:animal36 |
Wonder if Rocky would like real swimming. Francis (the "dim bulb" who dug in her water bowl) absolutely loved swimming in the pool with us! She was like a toddler - she wouldn't jump in by herself, but would wiggle impatiently at the edge until you reached for her. Once you raised your hands to catch her, she was in like a flash and paddled around contentedly! |
