I just read an article the other day (darn if I can find it) but it stated another reason to have a puppy stay with its mother until 12 weeks old. It went on to say that mom will correct this bad behavior before it gets out of contol. I can't remember how old your girls were when you got them and this might not have anything to do with it but it is interesting information. One of my little dudes is just like your girl and he is a handful. It is manic barking - almost like he is insane - of course I am the one going insane. The only way I can stop him is to pick him up but I haven't found the key to getting him to stop. I do not have a problem with him in the car as he is in the back on his lookout seat enjoying everything around him. If you find any great fix please let me know. :) |
She was 4 months when I got her.... But manic is a good way to decribe her behavior!!! lol We need to form a support group! ;) |
My Snickers is a barker whenever anyone comes to the door and basically doesn't stop until they leave. It's become a real problem when company comes over! We've been trying the "Dog Whisperer's" method of placing the dog down in a submissive position and holding him there until he calms down. Then reinforcing the 'no bark' verbal command. This has been working in small steps, but he will usually resume barking eventually. I think it's an ongoing process but maybe worth a try. :) (I feel your pain..lol) |
I am having the same problem. I think she is afraid of the dark because she barks then the most. At nothing at all. Also, having two dogs, they seem to take turns. Sometimes when I fuss one of them jumps on the barking one as if to say shoosh. I have tried the penny can, I have read the Dog Whisper book and tried the laying her down and all but nothing. I hiss and that works sometimes. I have been trying to socialize them more and taking them on walks. That kinda sucks as we live in Africa and it is not a nice place. Lots of guard dogs, so the "kids" want to bark at all othem. I yank on the leash lightly and say no all the time. Plus as hyper as they are (her) the book said to walk the heck out of them. All of this may help. It helps my lazy butt too.:) |
I agree with water method Lucky for me Moe only barks when there is actually a reason to bark, knock on door, cat in yard ect....but we also have a 3 year old border collie , which if you ever had one you will know this breed is very vocal, and will bark at you in attempts at conversation.I use the water method on Sassy for just such an ocassion, if she is outside and barking at nothing.....I open the second floor window and pour a cup of water over her....she stops and is shocked at the whole event she don't bark again , as the water may fall from the sky again.Inside a spray in the face or on the butt is good and they do get the message...unless your dogs one of those terriers like Ben is and is crazy for water....he actually attacks the stream of water from spray bottels , faucet taps, any source...so water wouldn't be a deterent for a dog like that. You may find you just have a talkative dog...and this is just who she is..this is the case with Sassy and we have to only deter her when she gets out of hand with the barking. |
I did the hold the mouth shut when barking with my Bunny. It didnt work for me. She barks or makes a barking sound with her mouth shut. I tryed the peenys in the can and she braked at me when I did it. It seemed to make her barke more then to get her to stop. I heard that a little viniger and water in a spray bottel or water gun work. So I am going to try that. I hope something works. It drives me crazy when I take her on a walk and she barks at EVERYTHING and EveryOne. She loves people, dont get me wrong. she will barke and growl at you untill she is liek 3 feet from you, then its oh oh pet me pet me wine. But I got to love her :P |
Lavender can be your best friend When my Scruffy gets all worked up or wants to play at 4am a drop or two of lavender essential oil calms him down! It is like doggie adderal! |
