No Barking
 

Hi...Wicket doesn't bark much. He kind of whines and squeaks a lot, but no real barking. I've only heard a real bark come out of him twice and I think he was as shocked as I was! If you want to hear your dog bark, try baking a cake-get out the mixer...that's when his bark happened! :animal-pa

MyriamHa -- No - you don't want your little Yorkie to learn to bark loud. This is definitely not a desirable Yorkie (or any other small dog) trait.

My pup was like yours and almost never barked. (I don't think he barked once the first month I had him), instead, he also made those cute little noises. But, as he got older, I learned that there was, indeed, a little - and sometimes a loud little bark inside of him.

Fortunately though, (at 8 months) he is still not much of a barker. And, when he does start barking, which is infrequent - if I just go and pick him up and move him or distract him, he quits immediately - and goes on to do something else.

I am sure that your pup, in time, will bark more than he does now..... but if he ends up to be "not much of a barker" like mine - count yourself lucky.

***** Take some time - and read some of the posts about "barking" on YorkieTalk. Perhaps this will help you realize just how lucky you are!

PS: The first few times a little pup looks up and that little bark comes out --it is cute! I agree with this. But, it is definitely not something we want to encourage - or want more of.

I am especially lucky because I have two dogs that don't bark much. They do bark - but not a lot at all.

WHAT? How do you know she doesn't want this? It sounds to me that clearly she does which is why she asked. I could be wrong too though.
Such a blanket statement got under my skin, sorry. You are always looking to teach your dog(s) something new and this little "trick" may be something that she just simply wants to do for her dog.
JUST BECAUSE YOU TEACH YOUR DOG TO BARK, DOESN'T MEAN HE CAN DO IT WHENEVER/WHEREVER. Correct him when he's out of line and praise him when he's right. Sheesh, we don't give our dogs OR ourselves enough credit in the ability to control our little ones appropriately.

This (not barking) is a problem, how?

From one who has a "real" barker, count your blessings.

You have a non-talker.

My guys didn't bark for the first month. Then, they felt comfortable in their surroundings, and started "protecting" me and thier house.

Now, when the windows or doors are opened, it's non-stop barking!

Be glad, I'm sure your neighbors are!

I don't think anyone has ever had to "teach a little Yorkie to bark??" And how many of us consider it "a little trick" that we want our dog to learn??

I think MiryamHa's little dog may not be much of a barker - but I have no doubt that there is a "little bark" inside him that will begin to show itself before long. I think if she's lucky like I am, she'll have a little dog that can bark very well, but just doesn't do a lot of it (the best of both worlds......)

When it comes to some training issues - some problems (potty training, chewing, excessive barking, etc.) aren't really that easy to solve. We have thousands of posts asking for help in these areas. And, thank goodness, we have YT to come to for help and advise.

When I first got my pup - I don't think he barked more than once or twice the first few weeks I had him.... I guess he just didn't have anything to bark about - because I quickly learned that he certainly does know how to bark. He just doesn't bark a lot. Even though his first little barks were "just darling" coming from such a tiny little thing - I didn't encourage it or try to get him to bark more. I'm sure I could have gotten him barking up a storm if I had tried.

Remembering back - when I had little children over - they would play with Murphy sometimes and get him barking - on purpose. And, I'd tell them, "You can play all you want, but let's not get him barking......I don't want him doing a lot of that!"

I think that if a puppy doesn't bark - it's not anything to worry about.....it will be barking before you know it. But I really think that most of us would like to keep it down to an acceptable amount - if possible....

And - why would we encourage behavior in a puppy that we may have a problem with and have difficulty stopping later on?

My puppy's claims to fame are:

1) A pleasant sweet personality.
2) A silky coat that doesn't tangle or matt.
3) And - he's not a barker.

*** We're still working on potty training.....

Sometimes I wish that were the case. Tobias does make a great guard dog... from the other side of the door he sounds huge. :yelrotflm Every little noise he hears he'll patrol the house barking and growling. :)

Believe me my girls do not hardly ever bark! And I am soooo grateful! I was always told that yorkies were really yappy, but I guess we got lucky! Count your blessings bc I know that some of them bark at anything and everything 24/7!

myriamha - It seems to be quite common that Yorkies don't start barking until they are about your pup's age. In addition to my Joey, I've read sooo many people post that "my Yorkie doesn't bark much" and then around 5,6,7 months that all changes.

If you want your Yorkie to be more of a barker (and only you can decide that), I'd train it like any other behavior. I'd carry small treats around in my pocket. Anytime pup makes a sound, I'd reward with praise and a treat. At first, I'd reward any sound. Then, I'd gradually reward only louder, barking type sounds.

Do think about the consequences. Yapping dogs can be a problem. BUT, as I said, the choice is yours!

You are sooooo lucky!!!! Emilee barks at everything. She barks when someone comes to the door, noise outside, someone walking into a room, door closing, door opening, toilet flushing, I've even heard her bark in her sleep. Drives me crazy sometimes!! I've tried everything to get her to not bark, but nothing works.

I agree my dogs do this also and the barking drives me CRAZY.

I know it is the one unpleasant aspect about my yorkies. I have found some small things I can do to keep them from barking inside the house but they still bark like crazy when they are outside.
