My toby seems like he did well, but he had his accidents. He's finally got the idea that going around in circles catches my attention and I head to the door quickly while I get excited while saying let's go potty. My new baby, Lexi, is only 10 weeks but I swear she's been better about heading to her paper. She has accidents, but she hits the paper more often than not. I think just watching and seeing her signs (dropping the chew toy, not interested in playing with big bubba and then running with her nose to the ground). I was running and picking her up and putting her in her enclosed pen where the paper is all the time and saying to her to go potty. Now, she tends to head that direction herself. Her mommy just has to remember to keep the gate open for her. I tend to just scold her a little and say "paper" lexi, but I'm also saying with in a calm, low voice so she focuses on me. I just have to laugh at her because she just knows she missed. I think the key is just praise, praise and praise when they do go on it. I'm waiting for the nice weather and finishing all her shots, but she wants to go outside with big bubba now. Make a big deal and love on them when they get on or close - especially if they attempted to find a spot on the paper. I keep the paper in a larger corner all the time, so she knows where it is. Keep calm and have a glass of tea to calm your nerves. I did almost the same thing with three kids and two dogs. They pick up on your nerves but react real well to excited praise. |

when i was teaching bunjee the "go potty" command, i'd place him on the potty pad and say "go potty" once. if he wanders off the pad, i'd place him back on the pad and say "go potty" again. and keep repeating placing him on the potty pad and saying "go potty" once. or if he says on the pad, i'll repeat the "go potty" command after a minute or so. when he's actually peeing, i'd repeat "go potty" while he's going and add "good potty" and other praises when he's done and ready for a wipe and his treat. |
I wonder how her day went today! Hopefully alot better than yesterday, for the puppy's sake! Poor thing! |
Good question! I noticed she stopped replying after things here on the thread got a little out of hand (so to speak). Kudo's to Kim for clearing out the icky notes. I hope she does come back to let us know how things are going. If she took all the good advice she got here today and only used 1/3 of it, she should still be able to get her pup positively and properly trained. Come back and tell us! We are always curious to see how things turn out! :p |
Well I would like first of all to thank all of you who gave directions and good advice and to let the others ( who judged me ) that when i said i spanked him, I didn't mean I tortured him, it was just a little spank on his bum, but i agree i should not have yelled at him and by the way im not willing to sell my puppy or give him to a loving home . He has all the love he needs . As for today he did well pee and poo on the pad andhe got treats like cheerios and cottage cheese and peanut butter, so far just one accident that i completely ignored . So thanks again for the advice and rest assured he is not a " poor puppy " instead he is a lucky puppy who gets the best vet, groomer and toys and lots of playtime . when i said i will keep him gated in the kitchen all day long it was just anger i cant stand to let him gated when im home for more than 5 min . :) |
Im glad to hear that he did better today and I hope that he continues to do so! Good luck! |
That's wonderful! Great to hear :) Thanks for the update! |
Thats good news, but little spank or big, my sister hit Spike all the time and now he is a nervy quaky dog. |
i'm so glad to hear that hes doing better. keep up the training! |
So happy to hear that today was better! Keep up the good work! I keep thinking "one step forward, two back" with my pup, until eventually it was the other way around! |
Hooray!! Myriamha, I am so happy to read your note! By the way you write, I just know that you are intelligent and thoughtful, and perfectly capable of potty training your pup in a positive and patient manner. I hope you understand that there are a few thousand people who frequent this board, and when you have such a big mix of humans, you are bound to have a huge mix of opinions. Most people on here would never consider hitting a pup. Some of those folks had a little difficulty keeping their reactive anger in check, and unfortunately, your post got them stirred to the boiling point. The way they felt was probably pretty close to how you felt that day you smacked your pup. They smacked you in with the written word. The power of positive training has been successfully proven over and over. I know that you are now on the right track, and will be able to accomplish your goal while keeping your pup AND you happy and healthy. All the best to you, Myriamha, and I congratulate you for having the courage to post your note in the first place, and ask for help. You got the help you needed, and that's the important part. Hugs to you and your puppy! :p |
myriamha ...It's great that you came on and posted....I posted to you and want to tell you - I personally wasn't at a boiling point or anything...but WAS upset anyone could hit a puppy...Hopefully you'll see those responses for what they were.....comments & help from people who really love dogs..... as you said....you didn't torture him... :) but with very small young puppies....It really can hurt them and I think after you read all the posts - you probably do know this. You were honest in your thread and I really hope you have better luck training him...it really can take up to a year or more with some of them....and good luck to you. When you get frustrated....just remember....he WANTS to please you :) being so young ...it can take a while before his body responses to catch up...but most all yorkies can be trained...some just take longer than others. |

I'm glad you are open about your feelings etc... i can understand you get upset about this issue, but like everyone else said "patients" is the key! My Chanel turned 1 year this past monday and she still has accidents, i dont have carpets, but expensive wooden floors throughout my house, she has peed on them and im sure she will continue to do so from time to time, as i ignored the accidents on my cheap tile flooring in my other house, i ignore her accidents on these wooden floors and praise her everytime she gets it right. Its SO much nicer for them and us to praise instead of punish them. They DONT understand "punishment" - your baby wants to please and love you :) Just hang in there and take a deep breath next time he makes a mistake ;) Never lose your temper on your pet, you WILL regret it!! Good luck  |

We all have bad days, but it's just like with kids you can't take it out on your puppy. My niece is 11 and she would kill me if she knew I was saying this but she at times still pees the bed!!!! We don't spank her or rub her nose in it we clean the bed and the sheets and move on. Please don't make him scared of you. Listen if the worst thing in your life is a 5 month old puppy that pees on the carpet then you are doing okay. Maybe that's his way of saying hi to you :D Our babies need us to be nice and give them lovies. He will learn where to go potty soon enough. |
I can't believe what happened yesterday night its a miracle !!!!!!!! I put Royce on his pad in the afternoon several times on his pad and didnt say anything and everytime he peed i praised like crazy and gave treats and yesterday nignt i was lying on my bed and i saw him running to the kitchen, so i got up to see what he is going to do and guess what???????? he peed on the pad !!!!!!! I was soo happy i couldn't believe my eyes !!!!! I will see if he does the same thing again today and will keep you posted . :p |

Just a thought and I apologize if it's already been said (I read lots of the posts but there are tons), you need to think like a dog. "Mom gets mad when I pee so I better go pee away from her". The dog doesn't realize you are mad about the location. He had just learned that peeing makes you mad so why would he want to pee on a pad right in front of you? Much safer to run back to the living room and pee really fast before you see him. Another thing about the rubbing his nose in it thing, dogs don't think pee is gross. They actually think its pretty cool so rubbing his nose in it isn't any kind of punishment to him anyway. |

Not to pee on your party but be prepared for setbacks. There are times it seems they are completely housebroken then they regress so don't get upset if that happens. It's just part of the Yorkie package. :2hearts2: |
Im SO glad to hear that things are taking a turn in the right direction!!!! Keep up the good work!!! YEAH!!!! |

Ooopss The belly band site I posted had an error in the address. Here it is again. http://www.pekeatzurescue.com/bellybands.htm :p Myriamha, congrats on your progress!! I am so happy for you and Royce! Remember, though, there will probably be accidents again from time to time, so you still may want to think about belly bands if you are planning on letting him run around the house. HUGS to you! And again, HOORAY ROYCE! |
you know I feel for ya. I have lost temper before and really let loose, exspecially last week when Harley peepeed on my foot 3 times in 2DAYS. I wanted to spank then saw those little eyeballs and melted my heart, my kids say mom you would kill us if we did something like that. But over the years I have come to realize that carpet can be replaced or cleaned and Harley cant. I understand the frustation. And if truth were told everyone has lost there temper at one time or the other. Dont worry, he will get it one of these days, I truely think that the yorkie is the hardest one to potty train. and I also did the potty pads, I think you need to get rid of them now, and just use the crate and the outside. If he gets cold he will just hurry up. That is what my Harley does. The crate sounds mean but it really is best for them. The pads send a mixed message about the house. Mine now goes pee outside and poop in side , he doesnt like you to look at him when he goes , I guess he is modest mirt...... Hang in there, no one is perfect, dogs all have different personalities just like us, some of us dont mind if furbabies eat the drywall and rugs, some of us do. Just remember your baby reacts more to your emotions then words, because packs of dogs dont use english they feel and see and know. Be the pack leader and be confident in your dog, he will feel it. good luck to ya |
