Potty training issues!!! Hello everyone, I am a new yorkie dog owner. My puppy Lulu is just over 3 months old, we have had her for 3 weeks now. I am having a really hard time training her. I am training her to go in a play pen on paper, since we live in Minnesota and it is so cold outside. I am looking for any tips or tricks, and also just curious if yorkie's in general are harder to train than other breeds. I adore Lulu she is very sweet and cuddly, I just want her to at least start to become somewhat potty trained. ANY help at all would be great. Thank-you all, Carly :animal-pa |
I'm having a problem with CoCo pooping -- really! He always goes to my roommate's room to poo there. When he wants to pee, he pee's RIGHT next to the pee pad. CoCo only pee's on the pad when I'm watching him. The only time I know he pee'd or poop'd somewhere other than the pad..he acts all scared and tries to hide somewhere because he knows he did something wrong. Or he'll run to my boyfriend and try to avoid me -- I think scared of me and goes to my boyfriend to seek comfort. Poor thing...but it's so ANNOYING!! |
I know what you mean!!! Lulu does the same thing, she likes to go pee right next to the newspaper. I can't leave her out of my sight for a second or she'll pee or poop somewhere, and their so little that you don't even see them until they are a couple of days old. If you find anything that works let me know. I'll try anything :) :animal-pa |

Good luck! |
I agree, try a pee pad and there is even a spray you can spray on the pee pad that attracts the dog to pee on it. Yes Yorkies are one of the harder breeds to house train. Some Yorkies even take up to a year to fully train. Just stick in there and be consistant with her and she'll eventually get it. My 7 month old Yorkie (Bella) is still not 100% trained yet. She's fine during the day and at night I crate her (she has a pee pad in there) but in the morning I always fined pee in her bed and I don't understand why she won't use the pee pad at night  So I end up washing her bed every day :( It is frustrating but she's worth it :) Good Luck! |
I'm sorry to hear you're having a hard time!!!! Oliver is 100% potty trained but WE HAD OUR DAYS TOO! haha being persistant IS THE KEY!!! Oliver is 4 months old now and I got him at 8 weeks. I watched him ALL the time and when I couldnt' he was in the bathroom with the gate up (his bed, litter box, and food/water is in there) And when he was out ever ten-15 minutes I would run him to the litterbox and say go potty go potty. We wouldn't leave until he went or we had been up there for ten minutes and he hadn't gone! Then I'd do it again in 10 or 15 minutes. It was so often because as a puppy he peed all the time! haha Enetually when I took him to the bathroom he knew I wouldn't let him leave until he at least "tried to pee" and by try I mean jump in the litter box. stand there. and then jump out. hahaha These dogs are TOO smart. Anyways... he wasn't allowed full freedom in the house until i could trust him in smaller areas. They bathroom is ALWAYS open for him to go into so he never has to hold it and find a place to go. (on the carpet!!) I hope things get better- every time he goes, even now, I clap and say good boy and give him a small little treat. He is really motivated by food! haha I hope your little one catches on! |
I tried the pee pad thing and Reggie refuses to use it. He pees in a dozen different places in the house but has been pretty good lately about pooping outside. Whatever the pee pad is scented with does NOT attract Reggie! good luck and I'm looking for help too. |
OK, first, she's 3 months old. You can't expect much. They don't even know they need to go until it's too late. Second, Yorkies are hard to train for 2 reasons. 1. Because they have small bladders and you have to let them out every 15 minutes until they are a few months old, and like every 30 mins until they are 5 months or so. It takes up to a year for them to gain full bladder control. Loki still goes outside every hour or so in the evening when he's active and he's over a year old. But, he's 100% trained, and I'd rather let him out once an hour than have to clean up messes. 2. Because people don't always train Yorkies to go outside - they confuse them with pads/paper/litter boxes. The distinction between inside/outside is SO much clearer than one corner w/ pad vs. another corner with carpet. They are still dogs. I highly doubt many people would try to pad train a golden retriever. Yes, pad training works for some dogs, but not for all. Some pee "near" the pad. It also allows the owners to be lazy, which can increase mistakes. You cannot expect a 3 month old dog to know it needs to pee on the pad and always go there. You CAN, however, set the dog there every 15 minutes and wait for it to pee and then reward that behavior. Just like you would do when you go outside. Yes, it is super time consuming but it's only temporary. You should definately check out crate training. Also, if she pees when you let her out of your sight, then don't let her out of your sight. Don't give her too much freedom. Put a leash on her and tie it to your belt loop or crate train her. Housetraining is a lot of work. It's a full time job for the first few months that you have your Yorkie. It's just something you have to get through and it will start to get better, but not before you clean up a lot of puddles. This is for everyone - your dog does not feel guilt the way we do. If you think they "know what they did wrong" what's actually true is that they are anticipating your reaction. The proper way to "correct" an accident is to catch them in the act, startle them if necessary so they stop, quickly pick them up and carry them outside (or to a pad.) Then throw a party when they finish in the correct spot. Yelling does no good and can hurt progress - it will only make the dog afraid to pee in front of you. If you see the puddle 5 seconds after they are done, say nothing and clean it up. Then try harder next time. I'm not trying to discourage you, in fact just the opposite. You get out of it what you put into it. You just have to be realistic in your expectations. It's frustrating! Everyone has trouble. But it does get better. Good luck! |
Simple, crate her. Crate her during the day, crate her during the night and when you take her out take her straight to where you want her to go. When she does go say the command you want to use. I use "potty" so keep saying potty until she finishes and as soon as she finishes stop saying it. After about a week of this she should know what it means, but you should be crating her and when she is out the crate you should have close supervision on her. |
I am going to try a pee pad, I am new to all of this and didn't even know that there was such a thing. Thank-you so much:) |
Thank-you so much for your kind works. I understand that Lulu is just a puppy and of course it's normal for her to have accidents in the house. She is very very smart, and so darn cute. We all love her to pieces. I am a stay at home mom so I am able to spend all day with Lulu working on the training. I always give her a treat when she goes potty outside, so she lookes forward to that. I am working really hard with her, and I know that she will get it eventually. Thanks again. |
Just want to say congrats on your new addition.....I bet you are having a blast with her. We are going through the same thing...Zoe is 3 years and we had her trained fully by the time she was 3 months....it was great and I thought people were nuts when they told me that Yorkies are so hard to train but then we got Lizzy...Zoe's daughter and she just turned 6 months today and boy what a stinker she is being about potty training...somedays she does so well on the pee pad but then she will go days going potty any where but the pee pad....She loves going outside and the treats that come along with it but I really think she doesn't know how to tell us yet that she needs to go outside because when she has an accident she jumps into our lap and starts shaking so then the whole family goes on a potty hunt....she really does feel bad....I guess what I should be saying is hang in there..your baby is young and that there are people out there that feel your pain...lol...misery loves company!..lol..Good luck with the new addition and welcome to YT!!!! |
I am also a first time Yorkie owner, or should I say he owns me? Chewie is 4 months old and the potty trainning has been the hardest. I have had many dogs in my days and the easiest is my doxie Elmo. He has trained all my other puppies simply by taking them outside with him, when he used the doggy door. Chewie goes out with him and will pee every time, but will also go in the house. I take him out all the time and reward with the treat and silly (potty dance), clapping and dancing and he loves it! But he does continue to have accidents. So I guess we just have to hang in there and keep training. I do think it is owner training more for us than for the puppies. It has been 15 years since I had a puppy so I am being reminded all the time of how time consuming it is. But very rewarding too. I love this little guy, and he is such good company for me and Elmo. Elmo is 15 years old and not doing real well. Chewie is helping him to keep moving by playing with him.I think it will just take time and persistance on our part. |
I am also a first-time Yorkier owner and Boy its rough. He can be so good and so smart most of the time. But he can also be sooo bad. I crate him only when we are not going to be around. He sleeps with us all night, getting up early with us and goes to the balcony (where his pad is) right away. When we come home, we take him out of his crate and straight to the balcony. He usually goes in a big way about 98% of the time. HOWEVER, while we are home with him, he goes all over the house with these tiny little quarter sized pee spots. And for some strange reason, he likes to poop in our bedroom (usually within the same area). I can't figure it out. I have read books, I have read posts here on YT and I have done it all. Except, I haven't yet tired the bell thing. I think I might give it a shot. We have been working on other training too. He has SIT, but nothing else. I have been working with him on DROP IT, COME, QUIET, STAY and LAY DOWN. He hasn't picked up on those as quickly. I was thinking of enrolling him (and me) in a class. But my BF says that I am alrady doing the things they are teaching. Meeko is very well socialized so that isn't much reason to enroll him. What do ya'll think? Oh Meeko is 6 months, I've had him for about 3 months. |

The class really is for you to learn how to train your dog, which also helps you bond with your dog and you begin to understand things that work and don't work more quickly. In our puppy class, we even covered housetraining, chewing, jumping up, and other puppy problems. The trainer would give us tips so we didn't make the problem worse. If he is pooping in your bedroom, don't let him go in your bedroom. Then clean it with an enzymatic cleaner and then if possible a steam cleaner. If he smells it there, he will go again. This is true for pee and poop. Smelling poop stimulates dogs to go. Also, he could be pooping there because he is hiding and he does not want to get yelled at for going. When you catch him in the act, it is OK to startle him but not get mad, and carry him to his spot on the balcony. Typically when Loki pooped in the house it was because he couldn't hold it - like if he was sick or he was running around too much and all of the sudden had to go. Now he has better control and he knows how to tell us. He rings his bell frantically when he needs to poop - he does NOT want to have to poop in the house. Does Meeko know how to tell you he needs to go out? Try the bells! They empower the dog to let you know when they need to go, then they get rewarded for doing so. It's win-win. Also, if it's TINY spots he may be marking. If so, you'll have to get him neutered ASAP if he's not already. If it marking, try belly bands. You can still teach him that it's not appropriate to mark in the house. Again, a profesional trainer can help you with that! Good luck! |
