Another option for you I realize not everyone has this option depending on your location and prices in your area, but we found a certified, master degreed, professional positive trainer that is actually closer to us than Petsmart and charges only a few dollars more per class. We are in the far west suburbs of Chicago, and there are a lot of trainers around here. We have been able to continue with classes far beyond what we could have done at Petsmart. We have really enjoyed it - it's a family activity!
I know some of you have fun loving little cuddly Yorkies and you'll do fine with just a Petsmart class, but Loki has one of those independent, stubborn, "what's in it for me??" kind of personalities. He truly is a monster, a "terror", and doing training with him allows us to channel that so he has developed into a reasonably well behaved and polite dog. We were able to find out that he learns best if the right food is involved and he is so used to learning new things now that he can learn a new trick in an afternoon. And while tricks are fun, we've been able to learn how to develop a structured environment for him so that he knows what is expected of him and how to behave. When he has to guess, everything falls apart. We've had him a year now and he knows 50+ words and at least 20 "commands/tricks" We make sure he is always learning something, even if it's just how to behave at the playground around kids. It's so much fun! |
