| Pad Training Older Pup Hey Family, I have a 18 month old yorkie (regular size, not the toy breed), Sophie. I took her when she turned 1 year from an elderly woman who could no longer care for her. She was crated most of the day and night at her previous home, so she just instinctively didn't go potty in her crate. I incorrectly assumed she was crate trained and gave her free range of the house. FAIL! Within the first week my new cream accent chair was Sophie's new potty (Thank goodness for awesome warranties!) I also had Sophie spayed the week that I got her, and she had a few complications because she was malnourished when she went in and we didn't know. Fail #2. Needless to say, our first couple weeks together were pretty intense. Since she was already used to being crated, I managed to train her to go outside and not in the house. She also went to daycare everyday for the last 5 months, where she was able to go in the play area whenever she needed, and for the first few weeks they kept her crated and took her out for walks throughout the day to go potty. Within a month she was fully house broken. Mommy recently quit her full-time job and started law school, so Sophie isn't in daycare daily anymore. Over the reading period and winter break (4 weeks total) I've managed to get her to hold it for a full 7 hours with no accidents when alone in the house. Around the 8th hour she'll just drop and go potty wherever. We're giving pads another try. We're on Day 3. Sophie refuses to go! She's in the crate all day. She only comes out to eat for 15 minutes. Since I know she can hold it at least 7 hours and she's stubborn as a bull, I'm taking her out every 7 hours to try. We've tried the pad, the pad with the pee smelling spray, the pad with Sophie's pee (collecting that was NOT fun for mommy), and the pad with Sophie's pee and poop. She will NOT go on the pad in front of me at all. Yesterday she held everything for an entire 13 hours. Yes, I counted. She tried her best not to go on that pad. When I took her out the crate the last time she lost everything as soon as she got her bottom out the door. Literally. I swear she didn't even squat to pee and the poop...well, it just came out...all 13 hours and 3 meals worth. On my hardwood floors. In winter. In front of the heater vent. I'll be able to get home to her within 7 hours, but I really want her to be able to use the pad in case I'm late getting home for any reason. I also want my life back. You know, the one where I could go out for drinks after work or spontaneously have dinner with my bf. These days I'm on a 6 hour timer to get back to my Sophie. Sorry for the super long post. If anyone has any suggestions or advice at all, PLEASE share! Thanks! |
