Q's about having 2! So when you transition from an only pup to having two, what are some of the biggest changes? Luma is fed at specific times. Should a puppy also be fed like this, just different foods? And can I feed Canine Caviar advertised as "all life stages" to a puppy? Do they need seperate water bowls? Luma is pad trained and never has accidents. We are going to get a boy, and I've heard they are much harder to train. Can I pad train a boy dog? That may be a stupid question, but I have no idea what to expect with a boy!! Luma has full run of our apartment when we are both gone, which is rare. If I put the puppy in a crate won't it cry the entire time because it wants to get to Luma? Likewise, at night Luma sleeps in our bed. Should puppy have to sleep in the crate? I don't want to cause dominance issues. Which brings me ti my last question (sorry for so many!) Luma is submissive around other dogs. At least at first. If they keep getting in her face she will bark at them. What kind of puppy personality should I look for? A leader? A loner? I want them to get along and love each other but I do understand it will take time. It will be a while until we actually get another puppy. I am just doing all the research I can so I can be prepared. :) |
Don't have any answers since I only have Zeus... but congratulations!! :D |
For us, the change wasn't really that big! It was obviously more work having to housetrain another dog. The toughest part was getting Brody onto a sleeping schedule and bathroom schedule. I think you can feed the all stages food to a puppy :). You will have to slowly transfer him over though, which was a challenge. It was hard not getting Sophia to munch on Brody's exciting food. That only lasted a week until he was switched to her food. Not sure about the timing because I free feed both dogs. They share a food and water bowl. I used to have two of each, but they would only eat out of the same one anyway, so I moved a set into our office. Brody was doing so well and actually peed on my blanket yesterday!!!! I, personally, think they're harder to train. Many people pad train their boys, it just wasn't feasible for us. Marking was only an issue in the beginning, he peed on the wall a few times lol, but that stopped pretty quickly. Not sure what to do about Luma having free roam and the new dog. Maybe someone else can help you there. Brody has slept on the bed with us since day 1 and it didn't cause any problems! Sophia has always claimed the feet area and Brody likes sleeping above our pillows lol. I think the biggest concern of him sleeping on the bed would be the peeing, not the dominance. I'm not sure about what personality type is best, maybe just see what puppy she draws herself to when she meets all the little puppies! :) I would guess a leader, if she is submissive. Sophia is the leader and Brody is submissive, and it works out perfectly. SO excited for you and Tony!!!!! |
How exciting, Luma is going to be a big sister!! Potty training -- I don't think sex matters in terms of difficulty. My boys were very, very easy to train. They are pad trained. Ideally, train your boy to squat and not lift his leg. Max is leg lifter, so I keep the pad a foot away from any vertical surface/walls to discourage him from lifting. He still does a squat with one foot off the ground, lol. Feeding -- Ideally puppies should have access to food all day, especially if they are under 3 pounds. Even on a schedule, a puppy should probably get 3 meals a day until at least 8 months. This one may be a bit of a challenge to balance during the first year. Crating/Free Run -- This depends on the individual dogs. We brought Teddy home when he was 8 months and I made a little apartment in my bedroom for him with 2 xpens and his crate. Max would not let Teddy share our bed, so Teddy slept in his apartment. I also separated the boys this way when I couldn't supervise because they played really rough at first! Personality: I'll be interested to hear what others have to say. My boys are both "alphas" and it can be a difficult combo to manage. I think you are safe starting with a more submissive personality. |
Water bowl -- as Sarah said, 1 is enough. I put out 2 and the guys still drink out of the same one.:p |

I beg to differ with you here :p. I'm also wondering if Brody is more difficult to housetrain because of his personality and not his gender.... hmm. Brody always starts off with a squat and slowly lifts the back left leg LOL. Unless it's a lightpole, then all bets are off. |

The good news is we're shooting to bring him home end of April and Tony graduates in May!!! Wahoo!!! That will be so nice. |

I would be willing to trade some barking for a potty accident or two. :D |
I agree with Kristin. Kaji was a breeze to potty train. Took him 1-2 weeks to catch on to the piddle pads. I personally hate them, but our current living situation calls for pads so that's what we use. Kaji is a leg lifter, which I think I encourage. When he squats to pee, which he sometimes chooses to do, he gets his front paws wet. When he lifts, it's much cleaner. I think Kaji's aim is off. :p as you can see, each pup is different. As prepared as you think you may be your new pup may surprise you and be more easy or more difficult. As for personality, you should really talk to the breeder. They would probably know a thing or two and might be helpful in picking out the right personality that will compliment Luma. |
Thanks for al the advice ladies!! I will let y'all in on a secret since I'm dying to share it (besides Sarah, she already knows) we have been thinking about this for over half a year...and I knew I wanted a boy but we couldn't think of any names we liked. We came up with two...Pixel, and then the one we have actuallly chosen: Keaton!!! YAYY! lol I am just relieved to finally have a name. Now we have to find the perfect Keaton :D |
I had a name picked out years in advance. I'm just glad Kaji took to it quickly. He never did come when I called him by his original name. |
