Yappy Pupster Hi Everyone, have just joined Yorkietalk. My puppy is 5 months old and he is very good in the flat. He has been sitting since he was 10 weeks old and can lie down, come, stay, wait ect., but when he goes outside (and he has been walked several times each day since he had his jags) he gets very noisy, to the point that people stare and tut and I get very anxious. He starts off by whimpering and this gets louder until he is yipping and yapping by the time we get out. He pulls constantly on his lead and is not put off by being told to be quiet or by being pulled back to heel. He wants to run all the time. After the initial excitement he calms down a little and makes no more noise, but if he sees another person he pulls and darts about and starts to yelp again, this is worse if it's another dog. He doesn't even seem aware he is doing it and I can't seem to get his attention either. I had a Yorkie before and he was very quiet and well behaved outside so this is new to me. Chico loves to be out so it is not fear but excitement (his ears are up and tail wagging). Also he is very noisy if we stop to cross the road, he wants to keep moving!! and if we go into a shop and he is picked up he will yap too. Any advice would be gratefully received!

Have you tried possibly enticing Chico with a treat to get him to stop his excitement? Puppies really do have a lot of curiousity and excitement when going out, since everything is new to them, perhaps go to an open playfield without many people around, and train him to walk well on a leash without people around. That may have an effect on Chico, and then later when you do walk in with other people around, he may calm down a bit. But I'd try the treat thing first, if he can sit or stay when he sees someone, just give him a small treat. Hope it helps you a bit! And welcome to YorkieTalk!

Welcome to the group. You really can't compare him to your other yorkie. Like people, yorkies have different personalities. What you have on your hand is a very happy, excited and curious little PUPPY. He is extremely excited when you take him outside because he is surrounded with NEW noise, smell and sight. As a puppy he is curious and absolutely EXCITED. Nothing abnormal about it, he is only 5 month old. I think as he grows older(maybe after 1 year old) you will see him settle down a little bit more. For now, here are some suggestions: 1. Work out some of his initial Adrenalin. Either play with him outside or play with him inside the house before you take him out. Make sure he is slightly wore out before you do. 2. Start taking him out when are less people and get him comfortable with his surrounding before taking him into a crowd. 3. If you have friends, tell them to meet you outside and introduce your dog to them. Make sure your dog behaves before they are are allowed to pet or reward him. 4. Reward him when he behaves.
