so about to give up Ok guys, I really need some good advice here. Dollar (Gos bless him) is bad dog. He never goes outside. I will take him out and walk him and nothing...as soon as we get inside, he goes right on the floor. Or he will wait till we are not looking and poop. I have done everything. I show him his mess and so NO! bad boy and tap him on the botton...and put him out. and when he does go outside I give him a treat and praise him. We have been doing this for 2 months and he still hasnt learned. He pees in the bed and everything. I know that yhe is smart b/c when he does go in the house he hides b/c he knows that he was bad.....but he cant out it together that he needs to go outside. what do I do...am I missing something??? some times he will go on his pee pads, but others just on the floor near the door. HELP!!!! |
How long do you stay outside with him? Maybe it's not long enough. Or maybe it's not as often as his little bladder needs? Sometimes Kelsey does this and it's usually my fault b/c Im in a hurry. Just some suggestions. Good luck! :p |
yeah i agree, how long you out? Emma gives us signals if she is about to poo she will run around really fast sniffing everything, so we say OUTSIDE and she perks up and we take her out, it takes here about 4-6 mins then she will go. She always tries to just come to our feet but we constently say outside and walk around. Then when she does go we praise her and give her a Frosted Flake! As far as peeing, i dono, Emma would never go on her pads, then one day she just went, now she is about 95% hit on her pad. Oh also i dono if its good to show him the mess and say bad, maybe hurry up and pick im up and say outside outside or whatever your phrase is and take his poo out side and kinda lead him to it...? im not sure eather |

Have you tried crate training? If he is not on your bed he cant pee on it... He should not be there untill he has proven to be trustworthy. does he have free roam of the house?? I would use a crate and an xpen combo. It has worked very well for me in the past and is exactly what I will be doing with Pixie when she comes home... I figure she won't have run of the house for at least the first year. They can't make mistakes if not given the chance to. I know that they cry, I know that you might feel bad at first, but a crate trained dog is accepted everywhere! just think.. heaven forbid your dog ever need to sleep over at the vets... he or she will kennel him. He won't have run of the office. Just think of less stressfull it will be if he is already crate trained! It will be a breeze. But if he is not, it could be the most stressfull night he ever spends away from you! It may seem hard, but it makes life soooooo very easy in the end. |

some take longer than others to "take" to it... some never really crave the crate, but if you think about them as the animals they are, they are den dwellers... it is in their makeup. They naturally will seek out a safe place to rest and sleep. If introduced right your dog will grow to see his or her crate as its "safe place". Never put them in as a punishment, always praise and treat, offer their favorite toy only when in the crate, show them that it is a good thing! Some protest at first is normal... but if approched right, they will just do what come natural to them... My last dog would have had a nervous breakdown if you took his crate away from him! He freaked out if you even close the door on it... He felt secure knowing that he had a place to retreat to if need be... he would lounge in it for the better part of the day. Loved his crate. How long? I guess it depends on how its introduced and the personality of your pup... All I can say is... DON"T GIVE UP!!! you'll thank your self in the end!!! |
Can you crate train at anytime? What if the puppy is close to a year old? |
Toni, Don't give up. Remember it takes patience and consistence. Dollar will get it. Some just take longer than others. Gucci still has an occacional accident. Gucci is pee pad train. Sometimes she just go close to it, but i dont see it as an accident cause she went to the pad. I think if you see him going inside, taking him outside and tell him Potty outside or whatever you choose and praise when he does goes outside. Take him outside often and try not to let him run free of the house if you are no able to watch him. Good luck. |
Dollar will get this sooner or later....Trust me! I agree with crating him especially if he is going in your bed. Remember to start slow and gradually work up the time. I know how you are feeling, and I am blessed that he is finally getting it. Are you there with him all the time? I thought you said you worked in other posts. If you are not than I would suggest that you put him in the crate while you are gone, depending on the amount of time of course, or putting him in the bathroom with a puppy pad, food and water. Even if you don't want to use puppy pads when he does get trained, I would give him a designated place to go, until he learns how to let you know that he has to go potty. Eventually you can move the pad closer to the door and then finally take them away for good. When you take him outside say "go potty" or "go peepee", whatever words you want to use with him. Have 2 separate commands for each 'deed'. He will eventually learn these commands and go when you tell him. You have to be persistant and let him out about every hour or so and especially after eating and exersize of any kind. And remember to PraIse!! When he goes outside act like he ended world hunger, or something. Don't just say good boy, say, "Good job Dollar, that's a good boy, go potty outside, good boy!!!" and then REPEAT! I would also suggest hanging bells from your door handle. We bought the big Christmas bells at Walmart for 1.97 for 4, and then tied string speaker wire around them and then the door. Every time we take Toby out we make him ring the bell by putting his paws on the bells. When he does this we praise and say good boy Toby outside, outside, outside, (to teach him what outside means) then open the door and let him out. Always take him out that door. The best thing to do is ignore bad behavior, and not punish him for going inside, I know this is hard, but don't even yell at him. It doesn't seem to be doing any good, because now he is trained to hide and go where you cannot see him. Just clean it up, and go on. I truly hope this helps, we are in this all together. If you need any more advice, just ask, or pm me. I am here for you. :) :) :) |
My puppy loves to be in a crate ---if the door is open and he can get out whenever he wants to (that's the way it is for wild animals in a den). If he is locked in his crate and can't get out - he cries and doesn't like being there at all. I personally don't like crate training. I don't like my dog being in a crate that much of the time. I think it is okay when they are very very young and sleep almost all the time. But, when they get older, I just can't keep them there as much as you need to. If you're having trouble getting your dog to go to the bathroom outdoors - have you tried taking him to the same place every time he's out. Often if they smell where they (or even another dog) has pee'd before, and they'll pee right away. Is your dog on a leash when you are outside? I have had several friends whose dogs won't go the bathroom when they are on a leash. They know that they usually get in trouble for going to the bathroom and they sure as heck aren't going to do it with you right there! (They haven't figured out yet why sometimes it bad and sometimes it's okay - so they're not taking any chances) And, they hold it until they get back inside and get off the leash. And then usually try and get a little more distance between you and them before they pee. Potty training - fun fun fun!!!!!! |

Toni, A few things that you need to realize: First, you gotta be patient! A couple of months is not a long time for these little guys to be housebroken. Second, you may have to stay outside with Dollar for more than 5 minutes at the time. Take him out very often and especially take him out when you know he needs to go - when he wakes up, when he's just been playing vigorously, etc. Then stay out there until he goes. Praise lavishly as above and give a high value treat (like a small piece of cheese of meat). Can you let him off leash? As SnowWa said, he may be objecting to going on the leash. It also might be helpful to place a piece of his poop outside for him to smell when he goes out. Dogs often stimulate themselves to go by smelling excrement - their own or another dog's. Also, as Ashley said above, you need to give Dollar a way to tell you that he needs to go - a bell has also worked wonderfully for us; others teach their dogs to bark or scratch on the back door. Last, and most important: Dollar is NOT a bad dog. Dollar also doesn't know that he's "bad" when he potties inside. He hides to avoid punishment. If he knew how to please you, he would. You need to completely ignore inappropriate pottying; all you're doing is teaching him that it's not safe to potty in front of you. Good luck! |
Be careful about reprimanding for indoor mistakes. If you get angry when you catch him pooping indoors he may misunderstand and just think you will get angry if he poops at all and he will just get sneakier about it and may be afraid to poop in front of you outside as well. |
by the way how old is Dollar? |
I saw something so cute about looking at the yard from a Yorkie's view point and I realized that's why Sabrina won't go outside. Even right after the yard's mowed it's up to her knees - not a good place to poo or pee. She won't go outside either. So she's paper trained. |
I believe Dollar is about 5 months old. |
5 months old is still really young for a yorkie to be potty trained. It is really common for a yorkie to be over a year old before you can trust them on the carpet. |
It took me several months and lots of talking to other Yorkie owners to finally train Prince. Trust me I've thought of giving up to. But that's the worst thing you could do because every dog is smart and just needs the proper guidance. Dont insult his intelligence by quitting because that's just going to ruin your relationship with him. My relationship with Prince has became a lot stronger after the training process. He doesnt have it 100% down yet but he tries. Please don't give up on your baby because you are all he's got. Take the other poster's advice and give him a little more time outside. You may want to train him to go indoors. If you decide to do that, I can give you lots of advice because I had to try many methods to train Prince since he was older and had free run of the house, which is very bad. However in 2 months he knew what he had to do. Dollar wants to please you remember that. Prince also knows when he does mistakes and runs, but I catch him and tell him in a firm tone that was very bad and hit his hiney lightly and make believe I'm weeping. He hates to see me weeping. You need to observe Dollar and see what he likes and doesnt like so that you can use it to your advantage in training him. Hope this helps!!!! Prince and I wish you luck. |
What kind of wee pads are you using? Some are better than others and have that "scent" in them. I was reading somewhere not to ever let your dog see you clean up his mess or they will view it as a game. Good luck! |

Toni, Just curious if you have kept up with this thread? Have you tried any of the suggestions? How is Dollar doing? |
I need help I have been trying to train my little Ethan for over a month now. He is now 5 mohts old. He will go outside but when he is in the house he will not use the pee pads. I am going to switch to pee pads only because I work and hate to confuse him with outside and pee pads. How can I get him to use the pee pads? He will just go anywhere and everywhere in the house. I crate him while I am gone but he goes in it too. I was told to try a smaller crate. I am buying one tonight and hope that will help him not to go in his crate. Are any pads better than others? I am desperate.. He does sleep with me at night and does not have accidents - constantly wants to go outside though(more like a game now..). Help. |
hey guys.....thanks for all of the advise....I am going to try to crate him tonight. he peed in the bed again last night so I will go back to trying to keep him in there at night. I am not as frustrated as before....and about the reprimading in the house I have been told that this is a good thing to do by professionsal on trining so now I am confused. I think that he will get it in time, I was just frustraed last time. B/c I know that he is smart......lol hre is what I am going to try. Crating him at night. And if he does go in the out say a frim NO! and then say go outside and take him right out. When I take him out and he goes I will do the same as before...say good boy lots and pet him and give him a treat! |
dont bring him in til he goes then praise it might mean standing outside for a hour but he will get it "i dont get to go in till i potty " and hell go quicker give him time |
the first few days when i took yoshi outside we'd be out there for the better part of an hour, and i think i said "go pee" at least 64546546m3645636346 times (no exagerration. u think i just smashed the keyboard w/ my hands, but thats really how much it was). my mouth seriously hurt from saying it. i also made sure he drank an ocean about 2 or 3 minutes beforehand or went right out after crating for a few hours or crating at night. i think it might help to either pump him full of water beforehand, or have him confined in his crate where he wont want to go so his bladder fills but he holds it directly before taking him outside. after i finally got him to go pee outside, i tried to act like he had just saved the world and i gave him a treat he really likes. a month or two into it now, he is still going inside sometimes when i am not paying attention (he's not nearly trained yet), but he knows when he goes outside part of the deal is he is supposed to pee, so its like 5-10 seconds from the door to the grass and into pee stance. then he races over to me lookin for his reward, which half the time is a treat now and half the time is just lots of praise. hope this helps, take care |
