Im not sure if its possible to train a small Yorkie!! I need help is it possible to train a little dog like that? Do you think she will smell my other dog & urinate? Anyone with any suggestions please respond!! THANKS:aimeeyork

Hi, first sorry for your loss.
Yes it is possible to train a yorkie.
A tiny dog like a yorkie is always going to have
accidents. To start the training process you could get
one of those plastic puppy playpens and put down a potty pad
for when you need to leave her for a bit.
Whether you train to use pads or outside you just need to be
consistent. Good luck

I have 4 yorkies all housebroken. They do have occasional accidents at the back door (exit door to outside). One day I will fence the yard and give them the doggie door I keep promising. It is possible to housebreak yorkies but it takes a lot of work, patience, and watching them like a hawk the first few years.

I have never used pee pads. Always thought it may confuse the puppy/dog.

Good luck.

I have a little 4# yorkie she will be 13 months the 10th of this month, I got her when she was 12 weeks and I had her completely broke to the wee wee pads in a weeks time. The secret is watch her closely and give a treat and praise ever time she uses the pad, good luck

Hi, Sorry to hear about your dog. I've had my 3rd yorkie for a month now, my first boy. He was a terror to potty train at first, partially because he came to me at 5 months old because he was so tiny (at 6 months he is maybe 3 pounds), but he has now been almost flawless for 2 weeks (this could change at any time as they do go through phases and he could start testing me). My other 2 yorkie girls are trained to go on pads exclusively as well (and also on command - whenever they go you just give the command, or take them to the pad when you think it's time and give command). However, one I got when she was a little older (closer to 4 months old) and had already gotten used to going outside when she was at the breeder's, so she was extremely difficult to train, and at the age of 4, she started to refuse to go on pads for #2 and hold it until it just all...well...explodes wherever she happens to be. This is unusual and she is an exceptional case I would say, but anything can happen. I haven't been able to fix this yet but I make her go on command twice a day to avoid accidents. The key to training IMO is to watch every single move until the puppy is reasonably consistent (they have tiny bladders) and praise with teeny bits of treats every time (you don't want diarrhea or them not eating normal food). This could take weeks or months. Also, with my girls I crate-trained them, but with my new boy, I had him in a pen that just fit a bed, food/water and pad inside a pad-holder (puppy may otherwise shred pad). This helped him get used to the pad, but beware that if puppy is bored and so inclined, it may lead to poop-eating if there is poop just lying around! Luckily I don't think this puppy likes poop but my girls have gone through terrible phases. Ok, whew. That was a lot, but I haven't contributed much and reaped a lot from this forum so I thought it was time. It is completely possible to train little dogs - don't underestimate their intelligence - I've never had smarter dogs. Good luck!

I have a 2 lb almost 4 month old male, and I am very lucky and he picked up the word "potty" very quickly...Anytime he gets up from a nap or gets done playing, I am constantly saying "go Potty"..My boyfriend gives me a hard time for telling him all the time, but it is working..He will be trotting across the living room and I will say "go potty" and he will stop in his tracks and look at me like "you're right I do have to potty" and than go to his pee pad..lol

Gizmo is now 17 weeks old. He will look at me, walk to the newspaper, squat and pee while staring right at me. Then he sits down and waits patiently for a treat. LOL! It's so funny because sometimes he will go to the newspaper, pee one little tiny drop and sit and wait for a treat. All he wants is the treat!!! And I have noticed that he sometimes "pees on command". Love my baby!

I bought the dog house at a local store here called Stein Mart..It velcro's together..I just take the roof off and replace his pee pad..I am hoping once the weather is nicer he will go outside also, but if not at least this hides it away nicely..lol

I may try that if the grass potty station does not work
for oscar. I am having a terrible time training to him to use
the potty pads. He would rather play with them.
It is below zero here so taking him outside every 10 minutes
is too cold for him right now.
Soon as it is warm enough i am going to start outside training him.
Wish me luck...

WOW, thanks for all your replies. I read them all & hopefully I will be as successfully as you have!!! I ordered a puppy apartment yesterday so I'm hoping that will work!! Has anyone heard of it & know of any success stories personally?? Thanks for all your advice!!!
