Dental prices = poor house Bella needs to have a tooth extracted. They left me a voice mail with prices for a dental with extraction ranging from $365-$631  First of all, she is elderly and doesn't have very many teeth left; has some, but not a lot. They mostly fell out. I think a big part of that is her medical condition (addisons disease) and has been on prednisone for years. I am literally shocked they want to charge me that much. Am I wrong? They have literally gotten every penny out of me for this dogs care due to her illness and several emergency stays, not to mention the medication she is on is the most expensive there is (docp injections). I have also been very ill this past few years and my care has cost me thousands, plus I have 2 other dogs. I just don't have anything left. Sooo, are these charges reasonable or do they seem excessive? Especially for so few teeth, or are the charges mostly the anesthesia?? I'm also afraid to put her under in her frail condition and she has an enlarged heart. Yikes! Thanks. |
I don't know anything about dental extraction, but, if the vet may think she will need to have them all pulled eventually, do you think it may be wise to do the rest at once? I'm just saying that b/c the money is probably going towards the anesthesia, iv, medication, doc, nurses, etc, and not just yanking a tooth out, per say. I wouldn't want to put her under four more times (or however many she has left) to do the rest. Plus, that is a hefty price to pay to yank a tooth. But, you don't want it to rot away in her mouth b/c that can cause more damage as I'm sure you already know. Good luck!!! |
Some of the cost might be pre-op blood work. I always have that done before mine are put under for surgery. Where I live the bloodwork is about $150. The whole thing usually costs about $450, unless they have gone up since last summer. |

That sounds like a complete cleaning and extraction, and still very expensive. None of the Vets. here charge that much. Could you get a couple other opinions? |
Wow, I am shocked at the price differences!! The only thing that I hesitate about getting a different vet is Bella has addisons disease which is hard to manage (not to mention has used up every last dollar I have) and I would be afraid for another vet to care for her. I am going to call around this week though and get prices as I have 2 other dogs that need cleanings (very bad breath) and I just can't afford paying somewhere between $1000-$3500 for that! |
Dental Work for Yorkie They really get you on the dental work. I lost Dee Dee our first Yorkie at 10 years of age from cancer. My husband was with me when they diagnosed her but we took her to 4 vets and everyone started in on what dental work had to be done before they addressed the cancer. They all wanted between $1200.00 to $1500.00. The main thing is the anesthesia, do they have someone who monitors the dog while they are under and watch them carefully until they come out of it. It would have been useless because before they could operate on Dee Dee's ear where the cancer started, she developed a large lump behind her ear on her neck. We kept asking if the cancer could have spread and they all said no which was a lie. After she lost weight and become very ill one of the vets was honest said you know we are losing her. They make a lot of money on dental work but the thing is I don't like to put my dogs to sleep unless it is necessary. My other dogs were a Doberman who had excellent teeth her whole life, a german shephard, same, and I raised poodles for years. No problems with them either. I wonder if due to the fact that Yorkies are so small and a deliate little dog they don't eat large bones or chew on hard toys and bones? My son has Shi Tzues (spelling?) and their Vet scrapes their teeth and keeps them clean when ever they go to the vet for any problem or for grooming. NOT where I live. |
Saydee just had a dental last week. It was $140 for everything. Minnie and Rily had to have baby teeth removed during their spay/neuter. My vet only charged a couple of dollars per tooth, but, of course, that was baby teeth. |

I have been thinking of dental for my 2. I came across this thread and I knew it was expensive but I am shocked at the prices. I called my vet and the price is 319.74 for level 1, 344.74 level 2, cost difference depends on amount of tartar. Plus exam 53.50 Both levels include pre-op blood work general anesthesia antibiotic injection ekg fluoride nail trim as a bonus dentals are done in the AM, they stay until 4:00 in order to monitor all day dental rendered by dental tech with vet overseeing So the total will be for each between 373.24 and 398.24 that's a lot of money |
The dental prices I have been quoted here is $350-$600 depending on the level of tarter and how many teeth have to come out.....This does not include pre blood work, for that add on another $80-$120 depending on the size of the test. In the past year is was about $450 for a cat and $600 for a dog. Two years ago it was only $250 for the dog. I think this is outrageous..... |

Esp since i have prob spent at least 10 grand over the last several years treating her illness and then i developed several autoimmune diseases and im tapped out. I dont mind paying to have her bad tooth removed, but find $600 excessive. When i asked about price for extraction only, it was amazingly the same price as extraction with dental. Hmmmm. |

I just had 3 of my dogs teeth cleaned today and it cost me $553.22 for all 3 of them, Feb is dental month here. This included blood panel, Isoflurane, nails, ears, no exractions. Another one of my dogs went about a month ago due to an infection in his gums and an extraction and antibiotics, it cost me almost the same amount for just him, besides the fact that he ended up a pretty sick little guy. So i got 3 done for the price of the one a month and half ago. I agree the price's are way out there. |
$200-$250 for a stage 1 cleaning (includes IV fluids, Iso, whatever monitoring is needed)(does NOT include bloodwork, extractions, xrays). Small pre-op profile is $44. Total body function is $94. So about $250 - $300 with bloodwork. Not bad. Dentals with extractions and xrays go up quite a bit. |

I think ours was $155 in December. That included the pre-op blood work, a vet doing the cleaning, not a tech; all of the other stuff, incl fluoride and loving care.:) Forgot, but they did her nails at the same time. |
I spent a fortune on Jackson's teeth.... He got a Vital Pulpotomy (or something of the sorts) for an over-bite where his canine tooth was poking into his upper gums, causing an indent to form. Sooo he had to get x-rays, shave the tooth down, get a filling/cap, and a dental, and it was all around $1300. Plus not including the prior vet visit at the regular vet for bloodwork and yearly check-up, etc, which ended up being almost $200. *sigh* |
Dental prices are outrages these days , I'm glad I was a dental hygienist & a vet tech and am able to do my own dentals with no anaesthetic & they even let me use the water pick on them. My babies are all so good about letting me do their dentals. I know that lots of vets use the fluoride but IMO I would not allow them to use it on my babies as it has been linked to oral cancer in humans & animals. |
dental prices at my vet (near chicago) are $190 including anesthesia and cleaning. iv fluids during surgery is $36, pre-op bloodwork around $100, ecg on heart $65, $40 per tooth extraction. (unless they are pulling baby teeth, it is more like $5 each) antibiotics are included, pain meds are about $30. last february, my 2 girls went in for dentals and everything in the end for the 2 of them (including preop bloodwork, etc.) was about $900. that included one extraction on my older girl zowi and several retained baby teeth removed from pixie. this was during dental month (february) at our vets office and i saved about $100 because they were running a special. i have my girl's teeth cleaned every 2 years and the price goes up considerably each time. i'm sorry to hear that your sweet bella has addison's. my zowi (11 years old) was diagnosed with cushing's disease (opposite of addison's) last june and i understand the high cost of treating/monitoring, and what you're going through trying to keep your little one well. i too would be afraid with bella's conditions to take her to someone else and would rather pay more knowing she's with someone who knows her conditions and has already been trusted and is treating her successfully. you will know she is the very best of hands. bella is very lucky to have you, sounds like you're a great mommy. hope all goes well for you and bella! |
I am so sorry about the cost of health care for us and our Yorkies. I am retired and live mostly on a fixed income. So I understand what you mean. Pre opp tests & Dentals with no extractions are around $300 here in central Fl. But it varies with the Vet and area of Fl. you live in. My son's vet near Naples Fl. charged $550 but, the pre-tests were not included. My friend who lives in Tampa got a Dental for her Yorkie. it was $400 and included pre tests, take home meds, 1 extraction. My only suggestion is to have a honest discussion with your Vet and see what happens. |
I went back to the vet a week and a half ago so he could re-evaluate her and schedule her for the dental/extraction of ONE tooth and spay. He said she might need to have a few extracted and quoted me for four. I was really shocked how it went from 1 to 4. My price quote was $600 something up to $960. So she had her surgery today and he called me late this afternoon. Told me who he was, yada, yada and then loooong pause and my heart dropped into my stomach. I really thought I lost her. Good news, she was done with surgery, bad news, he extracted 14 teeth  I nearly fell to the floor. For one thing she has bad teeth (due to her illness???), but I didn't even expect that at all. I was also surprised they didn't call and tell me or get permission; I don't know, it was just shocking. They charged me like $460, less than the quote?, not sure if that was accidental. Charged me 2 extraction fees. Didn't get it, but was in no mood to discuss it. I just think it was pretty drastic given her fragile state (addisons disease). She is on narcotics, so she is confused, in pain, tired, doesn't want to settle. I have blood all over the blanket from her mouth ((not bleeding profusely, just leaking, I guess)). She has had a little bit of water and literally one tiny shred of cheese. I feel sick! Also, they gave her the rx for the narcotic, and metacam, but I was told by the addisons group no way can she take the metacam as she is on prednisone! So I'm totally freaked out, call the vets, the dr. says just don't give her the prednisone until she completes the metacam. Wellll, she can't live without the pred and he should know you cannot just discontinue it (she's been on it like 6 years). So everyone is telling me just to not give it to her; dr states it's a small dose, it will be fine. Honestly, this is horrifying and confusing. I just pray she will be feeling better tomorrow:cry: Just came to update the thread, ended up venting. Thanks. |

Poor baby hope she feels better today |
I'm sorry.:( They probably felt bad about misquoting what needed to be done, so charged less. But the vet should have called you mid-dental. Can she have Bupranex and tramadol? |

That does sound like an insane price to charge for dental. I feel for you. Last summer Daisy\'s leg surgery ran me close to 2 grand. We just recently got her spayed and Tessa is appointed for a dental in 2 weeks. These girls know how to break mommy\'s bank. It\'s times like this I am glad I only have 2, anymore and I may have to put them and myself up for adoption. Sorry I kid. On a serious note your vet may overcharge because yours is a high risk surgery. You may want to look at pet insurance options. I would do a price comparison between different clinics as well. Hope she gets well soon. |
