Help!!!!!!!!!! House training blues :aimeeyork Chase is 91/2 months old. He still seems to have an issue with going IN the house. He sits, stays, shakes paw, high fives, and leaves it. but OMG, housebreaking is not happening. he does go outside but sometimes he just goes inside, no warning or signs. He uses his paw to kinda scratch at me but its both for potty and play. so every few minutes im running him to door. especially after 700 pm. He still poops on paper at night but if i take up paper he just uses floor. I have NO paper down in house during day. but he only uses it at nite anyway. during day theres no reason or it. My husband is getting quite frustrated. any suggestions. I am an avid Dog Whisperer follower so I have tried all kinds of things. HELP!! |
Restrict his area ... crate or playpen... and take him outside about every two hours. If you do this for a few weeks it will help. Sounds like he has too much free roam. Also, you must watch him like a hawk if he's not contained, and if you see him going pee or poop in the house make sure you give him a loud "NO BAD DOG". Make sure you're praising and giving treats for going in the right places. |
Good luck. Wish I could offer words of wisdom but my does are strictly potty outside dogs even as pups. |
Maybe he's getting confused because sometimes (at night) it's ok to go potty inside but other times (during the day) it's not. I've heard some on here claim they have trained their dog to do both successfully, but most of those I know personally that claim that, have dogs that have alot of 'accidents'. I only have one friend that successfully trains her larger, older, dog to do both, and the potty pad is right by the door to the outside, and he uses it if he's desperate to go when they aren't home. |
Thank you for your replies, i do believe im confusing Chase. I picked up his food at 9 last nite, took him out at 10. NO POOP in my room last nite. :aimeeyork |

Need Help Too! I have a one year old male yorkie, Charlie. We got him in October of last year and he was so little and it was cold so we taught him to go on potty pads, but he was never completely broken to them. As soon as it started getting warm, we started taking him outside on a set schedule, using the umbilical method or using the crate when he is not being watched. We leave him in a small gated area with a potty pad when we have to leave for more than a few hours and he will wait until we get home and not use the potty pad, even for a whole day (which doesn't happen very often). He was doing pretty well and then all of a sudden started going in the house again. It has only gotten worse since the cold weather moved in here. He has a coat and he will still try to plant himself. When we do get him outside, he will pee once and then head back to the door. He is the perfect little man except for this. We love him dearly, but what can we do? I know we have created some confusion because of the potty pads, but it was just too cold last year. I have thought about the rascal dog litter box or the potty patch, but I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
Romeo is 28 months old and came home with me at 11 weeks. I am so happy to say it took one day to train him to go indoors (I have been using the same brand of wee wee pads and not changed). I tried to get him to potty outdoors but he refuses and will hold it until I get home then he make a mad dash for the pad. Indoors works for both of us -- I am home with him and can pick up/toss pads as soon as he uses -- but it is very expensive. I bulk order the Clear Quest puppy pads (100 per box) from freshpets.com |

They know if we go to another house or a store, it is not okay to potty indoors. Consistency is key. |
A very sensitive subject. It's only been 2 days, but we are trying to get Bailey trained for outdoors. Last night he made a mistake. This morning my wife found it and I made sure to take Bailey in there, show it to him and make a big deal out of it. The previous owner gave us a supply of pads, but my wife doesn't want to go this route, and I agree. We take him outside and also walk him. Winter will be a different story, so we'll see what happens then. It's all about trial and error and consistency. |
I have exactly the same problem with our nine month old Rosie. She is cute and smart in so many ways--she sits, stays, lies down, goes in her crate on command, comes when called (especially if we have a treat), cuddles, and does everything right.....except she pees in the house whenever she feels like it. She can be outside ALL DAY OR she can go out every hour, as needed, but then, she will just go off in a corner, or right in the middle of the kitchen floor, pee. It is absolutely amazing. I never had a dog like this. I am not sure I can live with this for the next 15 years, though it would break my heart not to keep her. Any advice from people who have had dogs THIS hard to housetrain? Is it likely to improve, let's say, when she is one and a half, or two, or is this just the way it it is? |
Im not following your training method you say he uses paper at night But you take it up during the day so I quess your expecting him to go outside during the day. I think hes totally confused on what hes supposed to do. Pick on way if you want him to go on paper you need to confine him with the paper down in a Bathroom or small area, if you want him to go outside you need to get a small crate and confine him when you cant watch him and take him out regularly when he goes praise and treat untill he gets it |
Another thing you can do is tether him to you during the day so he doesnt have accidents again praise and treat when you take him outside and he goes |
