I am Hiring a Trainer!! The journey to find a dog trainer in my small town has been quite a task. I decided to branch out my search to larger nearby cities (New Orleans, Baton Rouge) in hopes that someone can do in-home training for my 2 boys. For months I've been searching Craigslist, classifieds, yellow pages, asking vets, calling groomers - and finally I found Ryan! He's a behavior consultant/animal trainer and attended the School of Animal Sciences at LSU to earn his masters degree with an emphasis in animal behavior. He promotes scientific, positive training methods and is a firm believer in promoting happy relationships with your pets. What a Godsend!! We spoke for about 20 minutes on the phone last night. He's excited to take a break away from his typical behavior issue clients and work with basic obedience for my little crazies. He's working on a schedule for us and will get back to me shortly to let me know when we can begin. I dream of the day that I can take my boys somewhere in public, or even on a leisurely walk. We are so excited:) |
That's awesome. I hope everything works out. He sounds very good so far.:) |
I'm glad you found someone who you are comfortable with. You have to trust that person with your babies. I must tell you, though, I cannot imagine those gorgeous boys need any improving! ;) It's hard to improve on perfection! |

Yay! Congrats! Very happy for you :) |
That is wonderful. I have had trainers/behaviorists come to my place and work with Buster and have had great results. I am thinking of another tune up because he has some issues that he picked up from my parents rescue dog while I was visiting this summer that I want to nip in the bud, mainly dealing with barking and protecting. I hope the sessions are very productive for you and the boys! |
Good Luck! :) |
I'm JEALOUS! I would love to get a behaviorist's take on some training issues. Good luck! Be sure to keep us informed! |
I'm really excited. Let's hope he contacts me back with the schedule:eek: I just realized also that he can possibly help Max with his coprophagia problem. I'd love to get his input on that as well as the basic obedience training. |
I am so happy for you! I know how long you have been wanting to find a trainer near you that you could trust. I think you will LOVE it and I'm so happy for you and your boys! |
This sounds exciting, and good for you. I can't wait to hear how it goes. |
2 1/2 years ago I hired a trainer for Cooper but the only one I could find was a Mastiff trainer. She put a prong collar on Cooper and taught him to walk nicely... I didn't know any better:( The next trainer, when I got Max didn't show up twice and kept making excuses. I tried so hard to get her to the house. I hope at the very least that Ryan contacts me back. |
That's great. I need one for my 4 they all have issues. Good thing they are so cute or they'd be in trouble. LOL Let us know how it goes. |
tHAT'S great Karen. Hope you can start up soon. |
Good luck! Sounds like it's going to be a lot of fun. :) |

Well, he hasn't responded yet. I'm going to be patient. But the good news is that another professional trainer responded to me so now I have backup! She actually looks really good too: Positive-reinforcement based behavioral training for dogs with problem behavior: New York and New Orleans. |

Im glad you found a trainer that will work one on one with your dogs and hope it produces the positive results you want. I got my fingers crossed for ys |
I finally emailed him this morning as I haven't heard back. I'm a native New Yorker so I need things done yesterday and that's still way to slow. He apologized for not having gotten back to me and will send me a schedule tomorrow (hope he does!). In the meantime I now have 2 other people who have responded to my inquiries! I didn't think contacting people an hour away would be beneficial but they are all willing to drive. I hope it works out with Ryan, though. |
Good Luck Karen - I hope he works out. Keep us posted cause I would LOVE to have one too! |
Still trying to work out a schedule. I got an email this morning saying that the price had doubled. He spoke too soon when he quoted me a fee. It's ok though. He has to compensate for distance & time and he also mentioned training materials which we get to keep. In doing some research this morning I found tons of news stories and videos on him. I can barely contain my excitement! The second video is unbelievable. |

Dear Diary, He's coming tomorrow. :yay_jump: I'm so excited. It'll be fairly obvious what we need to work on first once I open the front door and make him step over a 2 1/2 ft. high gate into a sea of barking maniacs:D |

Good luck tomorrow; we'll be waiting for a full report.:D |
