Where is your Yorkie when you are not home? Hi, i'm wondering where others set their pups up when they are out running errands, at work, etc. Do you let them roam the whole house? A special designated room? A gate up in teh kitchen? While my 4 month old is doing super good with wee wee training I am still not confident in letting her run the house when i am at work. She does do #2 on her pads but how will i ever know if she made an error with #1 on the rug if i am not there to see her. so for last 3 weeks she has been in crate training mode, but now today i started her in the open kitchen with gate up. Any thoughts or tips to share? |
I have a large two story home, and my girls have all the rooms except the bedrooms and the living room because of carpet and rugs. They haven't peed on any yet, but I am not going to take chances. ;) |

Yes the rugs are tough, unless you see it happening or have a very light rug you will come home and not know if they had a mistake or accident. For now I think the kitchen is okay until she is fully trained. She has moved up from crate to kitchen. When we are home she is out and about :) |
My 4 have never been crated, they are confined to the kitchen/sunroom with gates and the laundry room where their potty pads are. The area is huge. They are not allowed in other parts of the house (unless they escape) because there are too many things they could get into. |
ZoE will be 9 months old this Friday and has had the run of the house since she was 4 months old. Thankfully, she's completely potty trained. The only rooms I close the doors to are the guest bedroom and the bathroom. I started her off in a playpen as a pup and that didn't last long because she quickly figured out how to scale the walls of it. I was worried about her getting hurt falling over the top, so that went in the basement storage room within days of getting it. Then I used a tall gate to confine her to just the kitchen, dining room & living room areas, which are all open to each other, and put her potty pads infront of the gate. Once I was sure she was potty trained, the gate came down and the potty pads were moved just a few feet into the part of the hallway that deadends at the stacked washer/dryer laundry closet, which is right across from the bathroom so its convenient to flush her poops! It works great for us :). |
thanks for the input. right now she is doing great with training so i dont put her in crate during day anymore. she is getting better about telilng me when she needs to go, gets fussy and i take her to pad and say my commands. she evenuses the commands outside now too but during day i just cant have her run wild in the house unsupervised, so she is in the kitchen today with gate up. i will be interested to see what happens when i get home. i will say the few times i have run to the store and let her have her way on teh first floor of our place, she hasnt done #2 anywhere but her pad. she has been good. :) |
My little guy is 15 months old and up til he was a year he was crated when we were gone. Now we just leave him in the house and we haven't had any problems. The longest we have been gone tho is probably 5 hours. I make sure I take him out before we go away and right when we get home. He is usually ready to go out then. He does really well at night too, holds it all night. |
My consern isnt Mina pottying in the house, however she will eat and chew on ANYTHING and could choke or eat something that I am not aware of and end up with a blockage that could make her ill or cause her death. A 4month old is still teething. Mina is 8months old and is still tasting everything that she comes to. Electrical cords behind furniture is a particular danger. The "drop it" command she has down pat,,mostly because she hears it soooo much. When I am not home she is in her crate, the other dogs are in a large expen. The big guy that is 15yrs old has the run of the house. |
the chewing is another reason i dont like her lose when i am away from teh house. she likes cords and eating flower. she is definetly in teething mode! |
2 Attachment(s) I use there x-pen! |
I have a kitchen/den arrangement, so I gate that area off when I leave. Copper is so little, the whole house would be overwhelming I think. Plus, I don't want him pottying in the rest of the house. Usually he holds it until I get back. I'm not gone for more than about 4 hours. If I have to be away for the day, my husband comes home at lunch and lets him out and plays with him. |
all of your pups are so cute! i like the little pen set up and how it leads to their littel crate :) |
Hello everyone! For me it's not the pottying but, again, the chewing! Harry chewed through Andy's phone charger cable yesterday - and I was only filling the kettle! And yet he goes for months without chewing a thing? Think he likes little dangly things! Sally + Harry x |
When Kaos was a puppy he was crated and/ or gated in the kitchen depending how long I was going to be gone. Now he gets full run of my bedroom while I'm not home. When he was about 10weeks he figured out how to unlock his crate, and one day he took everything he could find out of every draw, trash bin, and laundry basket and threw it all over the place. I just wish I had taken a picture. I was in shock that my 2lb teddy bear could cause such destruction. He's never touched any of my stuff since then. Unless he wants some attention then he will PURPOSLY find something that is mine and throw it around in the air to get mommy's attention. Like saying, "look mommy, look how bad I am being" |
Jax has free roam of the house! :) Well at my dads house we block the dogs off from the upstairs because of the cats but they get the whole first floor. |
When we leave our yorkies are gated in the family room. We have 2 big dogs so they are separated when we aren't there. The big dogs are gated in the kitchen and living room. All are large rooms so everyone has lots of room to still run around in. |
3 Attachment(s) My 2 are free on the first level of our home. It the weather is really nice, I keep the sunroom door open so they can be out there. Hot Rod loves to lay on the hot tub cover and look out all the windows. Since it's been hot and humid, they generally like to be in my sewing room. I have a recliner in there that Hot Rod just loves to curl up on and Maggie has taken over my scrap basket. lol |
Lily, Rubin, and Gracie have run of the house except the guest bedroom. The two puppies are in a play pen. |
The Pup has an expen and the old girl has a very large size kennel as in giant size as she can climb out of anyhting and does a roof is needed but most days they come with me to work and have medium size kennels that they hang in while I work and we take lots of walks around the acrage I work at. 1 Attachment(s) We keep our 6 month old Ozzy in a playpen in the family room. I highly recommend it. He is happy, and he never soils it, even though he's in there all day - from about 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. I always give him water and a special treat (his kong filled with wet food and crunchy treat) and he can't even wait to go in. I also have his bed and his toys in it, and we keep the mesh top off. He has no barking or whining issues because he's not patrolling a huge area. It's also nice because we can fold the playpen up really small in about 10 seconds and take it anywhere. I have to admit that seeing our puppy jumping up and down with joy in his playpen when I come home always make me smile and laugh. When we're home he has free run of the main floor, which is hardwood and linoleum. Carpet is off limits for now. |
thanks everyone. we have a new gate that arrived today, going to keep lola in our ktichen, front hall, and bathroom area. she can have room to run and play, will have access to food and wee wee pads if needed and her ed and toys :) yay! |
Abby:aimeeyork, Bella:aimeeyork, Pheebs:aimeeyork (& Foster) have free range of a long hallway, and a master bedroom & bathroom while I am at work. Pee Pads are at the very end of the hallway. Beds, water bowls & basket of toys are in my bedroom. Tallulah, the :cat0: however is always working security detail so, she must have full range of the premises...lol! She monitors the Yorkies who somehow hop onto her kitty tree! According to them...it's really a Yorkie:aimeeyorkTree...duh!:D |

I have Ahi gated in the kitchen when we aren't home and during part of my "work" hours.(I work from home) It's big enough for her to play, sleep, and potty in. She actually doesn't get to stay home by herself much. I think in all the time we had her only twice she stayed home by herself...for only a couple of hours too. :D |
They go to work with me. When I go to the store, they have an entire bathroom to run and play and sleep in. We use a baby gate to keep them in. |
She was 2lbs last vet visit Tibbs is staying at 6lbs 12 oz so far!! |

My yorkies go in my entry way which is large and ceramic tiles. The are potty trained but just got new carpet. And the cairns go in the kitchen bathroom also tiled and I just feel better when I am gone separating them. When I am home which is most of the time they run the whole house. I think you are doing it right with your pup |
We already had a Border terrier when we adopted our elderly Yorkie girl, and as Peggy the Yorkie has no teeth I am super nervous that if they should have a scrap when we are out then Peggy can't protect herself. They seem to get on fine together but Rosie the Border stays in the kitchen when we are out and Peggy stays in the utility room - just in case. We have only had Peggy a few months and when I am sure they will be ok, they will have the run of the kitchen and utility. |
chloe is getting ready to turn 5 months...she is crated when I leave the house, even if I go out to mow the grass. She's never left unsupervised! She's still mischievous! LOL |
