OP, have you considered training at the door? If you can't do baby gates, what you can do is have your pup in a sit stay before you open it. Once in a sit stay, leash him up (in case he darts) and watch him as you attempt to open the door. As soon as Fido starts to get up, close the door. The goal is to have Fido in a sit, stay while you go about your business at he door. If he is allowed out, then he'll wait for your command or to be led out.

It will be a tedious and long training process, but I'm sure he'll learn. You can even put a sign at the door for visitors to let them know why it's taking so long to come to the door.
I'm always in favor of training but I have to say, I thought my boys were trained until the day Teddy bolted out the door to chase the UPS truck. I decided to put up the gate.

Good Question and why would you put a small Yorkie tied out on a lead in a yard where he could possibly choke himself, or worse some dog come in the yard, such as a pitbull and mangle him.

Electric fence may keep your dog in but he will be subjected to other dogs having easy access to him, since they don't have the collar.
Seems like it would be kind of dangerous to leave your baby unprotected like that

Right. But if for some reason baby gates aren't an option, wouldn't the training be a second best solution? If you know your dog is prone to run or chase things, have him/her sit at the door, leash them up and then open the door, regardless of whether your taking them out or getting a package from the mailman. You have to do whatever it takes to keep yen safe.

Very scary.

I have gates at each of my doors that lead to unfenced areas. The one gate is not at the door...it is at the entrance to that room.

:thumbup::thumbup: Definitely. Or put the dog in a part of the house not accessible to the door before the door is opened.

Dad was the one who opened the door, and thankfully, I was pulling up to the house when I saw Teddy shooting down our long driveway. I jumped out of the car and called him to me and he came. My heart was in my throat.

I hear you! I have had it happen to me...nothing more frightening. My Cookie got out one night when I had company. It was dark out and she just kept running around the neighborhood. I was SO upset and finally sat down in the middle of the street and started crying (such a grown up reaction..haha) ... she came running to me to comfort me! funny...was not planned...but it worked! She was licking my face...haha

Crazy girl was not so worried when she was running loose ~ haha

Cookie is a trip...total huntress. But..yes, she is a sweetie .. did not want me to cry.
