Do you think dogs understand when you praise another dog for their behavior. Cooper barks on command now with no problem. I continually click and treat. Max sits right next to him but doesn't understand why I'm praising Cooper. I would think that Max would "get it". However, Max is not beginning to bark on command. It's a little quiet "ooof" that comes out. Not sure where he found his quiet voice!

The mail carrier should be here soon :eek:

From what I've read, dogs don't learn from watching others that well. This differs from apes and humans ("aping"), and cats ("copy cat"). I'm sure there are exceptions.

I have observed a clear dynamic between Max and Teddy where if one is praised for something, the other will repeat the same behavior (if they know it already) or another behavior to garner praise. There is a general tendency to follow each others lead, mainly Teddy following Max. However, neither one of them has learned a specific behavior/skill from the other. Teddy still won't shake/give me paw despite having seen Max do it a thousand times.

Adding to above: My boys won't mimic a specific trick, but they will mirror general behaviors. For instance, Teddy has learned from Max to come and perform a series of sits in front of me if he wants something. :p

Good input, thanks.

The mail carrier came. I'm ok with the initial bark. Saying "quiet" did nothing but i was able to reinforce what quiet is by feeding them chicken breast pieces while the mail carrier was at the door.

That being said, we just had a horrendous barking walk and i couldn't control them. :( We were doing ok until a truck passed us very closely. The 2 of them barked wildly and didn't care I was there. I'll just keep working at it. I imagine this will take a few weeks if not longer.

I thought of another behavior Max learned watching other dogs: kicking after potty. :D Karen, you remember this one. Although, I would attribute this to instinct 'kicking' in. Teddy is a kicker and we always cheer him. Max watched this and then saw his dachshund friend do it. From that day on, Max started kicking.

I do remember that. And since that kicking thread I've seen Cooper do it a number of times but not often. Max has never done that. I think Max mimics some of Cooper's negative behaviors like barking out the window or running to the front of the house barking when a car passes. I think Max would ignore it otherwise.

I have to tape Max barking on command. It is hilarious.

This is a really interesting thread! I fully believe that Beemer "learned" to lift his leg from my nephew's dog. He had never done it and we visited for a weekend. When we got home he started lifting his leg. It was the cutest thing though. He would nearly fall over trying to get it right. That's another thread though!

There is a hilarious thread somewhere on YT about boys lifting their legs to potty. I agree that it is so adorable. I'll try to find that for you.

My daughter's Cole is an avid "Barker". I've posted about it before. He is such a gentle soul and sweet little guy.....except for the high pitched barking. He barks at commercials, animated characters, & of course....other animals. He is so smart & she has taught him lots of tricks & even taught him to bark "on command". It really seems to help.

I think it might help. I suppose each dog is different. This morning the USPS delivery person came and I yelled from my office "QUIET!!!". Max came running to me and sat quietly waiting for his treat. I was so pleased with him. Cooper continued barking like an attack dog.

I know it's so hard. I mean how can you get upset when Cooper is trying to protect you. Good Luck!

Still working on it. Marcie is doing better. When I say quiet she comes running for her treats too. But afterwards starts to bark again.

Max and Teddy were both quiet this morning sitting on their platform looking out the window. Granted, we didn't have school buses today. There was some activity out on the street, so it was a big accomplishment for Maxman.
