Getting Aggravated Ok so a few weeks ago I signed Silver up for puppy training classes at Petsmart. We're on week 3 and all is going well. She's learned to sit, almost down, and leash walking. When we first started the trainer asked if we were doing crate training and I said no. I don't want to lock her in a crate when I am always home and she knows where to potty so I don't see the point. She mentioned it again last week and I still told her no I didn't want to do it. Well today I didn't go because I wasn't feeling well and my roommate took her alone. She said something to him AGAIN today and about how she is going to talk to me about it next week because it's going to be good for Silver and teach her stuff and I don't know what else. I'm getting frustrated because I don't want to do this. How many times will I have to tell her no? And why is she so pushy on the subject?? |
My schnauzer was crate trained..she was about 20 pounds, worked great for her. Levi my yorkie never liked the crate, so I didn't really bother much to try it with Lily. I think it is a matter a personal preference. The crate worked well with one of my dogs and not so well with the other. I think the trainer needs to respect your wishes. Just my opinion. |
I'm sorry you are feeling pressured by this trainer. I think there is a benefit to crate training so that when you have to crate your dog like for a trip to the vet or something like that, the dog won't be upset. I don't keep mine in crates either and never really did except for short periods. I did teach them the "kennel up" command and they will go into their crates on command...because it means something delicious is coming their way. Over the years I have reinforced the command so that I know that if I must crate them for a medical reason, they won't be stressed out by the crate....instead, it's a safe place where something yummy usually comes their way. With all that being said, I think you should talk to this trainer very frankly and thank her for the information but tell her you reject it. Just be point blank about it. A good trainer works WITH YOU for your home and situation and I think a nice reminder to her about that is in order. Good luck, try not to let this get you down on training - we've been doing obedience since ours were puppies and it is so rewarding to really be able to communicate with your dogs and have them be good citizens. |
I say tell them very sternly that you are NOT crate training and you are not even considering it and it is never going to happen, so please stop bringing it up. If that doesn't work, would Petsmart let you switch into another class with a different trainer? |
Wow, maybe the trainer has short term memory loss. When I started mine at Petsmart I was asked the same thing, but I said No and that was it. I was never asked again. I did tell her that I gate them up in the bathroom when I'm not home. I would be aggravated too. Just tell her "Remember, you ask me this every week and I've already said No I do not crate Silver." "Do you have a problem with that?" |
When we go out and take her she goes in the pet carrier fine and she is ok with it but it's only from Point A to Point B so it's usually not a long drive. And when we're not home we put her in the hall with all of her stuff and put up a baby gate so she can't get into any mischief. Also I don't think there are other trainer's at our Petsmart yet. It's only been open maybe 3 months and this lady is always talking about how she has multiple classes all the time and we're the only ones in our class so if I do switch it will still be with her. |
If it was me, I would write a comment to the store (or talk to the mgr). I had an issue when I took Ally into PetCo one time to get groomed. Ally is never put in a kennel and is always taken back and done immediately while I'm there. When I make the appt, the groomer knows what I want done. Well, last Christmas, everybody wanted their dog groomed and she got super busy. I had an appt so I took Ally in. She could not get to her so I left, went home, and wrote a nice little email to PetCo. I've never had an issue since. I did get a funny look a couple of times afterwards, but if I make an appt....I should not have to wait one to two hours when they know how Ally is to be groomed. The groomer is getting a special Christmas gift from Ally and Tia this year! |
She might be worried about when you go on vacation or something. you could threaten to quit her class unless she stops asking you. Do you have to pay extra for crate training? if not, i won't hurt to try. :) Loving Owner Of Vinny :) |
That sucks. It really should be a matter of preference. I don't like the idea of the crate, although, Kaji does have places that are all his own (his beds and his tent, etc). If I have another dog, and my way doesn't work, I will consider crate training, but it won't be my first choice. The trainer really should respect your wishes. If he/she keeps bugging, they do know they risk getting a bad review. |
I understand & respect you not wanting to use the crate...I have 2 crates for Baxter and Cooper, they are in the breakfast area, and are always kept with the door open. They go in them from time to time if I am in the same room. I used the crate when they were puppies when I was cleaning, or there was a lot of activity in the house, where I was scared they could get stepped on, or dash out the front door. We still kennel them from time to time when we are making short trips to town and don't feel like lugging our freestanding gate in. They are almost always greet us in a less hysterical fashion when we come home :p Another example is when we have company, because Cooper does not like kids. If Silver ever has to have a surgery and has to be kept quiet for a while, the crate is good for that too. Like 107Barney, I always gave them a nice treat, so they always go to their kennels willingly. I'm not trying to push the crate on you, just giving you some instances where it comes in handy. |

I did the ex-pen thing, and I made it small (4 panels). I ended up holding Kaji when I could cause he was going mad otherwise. I would do everything while holding him in my other arm. I have a stronger left arm to show for it. :p |
That's frustrating! I think it's all a matter of preference. I have nothing against crates - just hardly used one for Jackson. It wasn't entirely necessary. I like to phase them out quickly. |
Okay I haven't read all post yet just Candibee's and was too mad to read any more yet. I don't know what it is with Petsmart and their trainers and the leaving a dog in a crate. I did some training too at Petsmart. Did the class and the one on one training. I had to just very bluntley tell the trainer (which I did like) I do not believe in leaving a dog in a crate 8-10, 12 hours a day. I am sorry I am not going to do it. She never mentioned it again. Pees me off! If a pet owner does not wish to "crate train" and tells the trainer that, it should be done! I am sorry ya'll I never have like caging a dog. Now I will go read everyone elses comments. LOL |
Okay one more thing, I do use x-pens and gates when I am not home and their crate and tents are available in the x-pen, but they are not left in the crate only. |
