I'd put her back in the crate anytime you couldn't watch her or put her in an ex-pen with a pad. |
Okay, she spent the night (from 5:30-midnight) either in the crate or attached to me with the leash. She had no accidents inside....but she only went potty outside one time. I took her out every hour & a half to two hours and stay out there 5-8 min. |
Well, things have gotten better, but far from perfect. We have been letting her out with the dane so she seems happy to have that access. I have been penning her with a pad and trying that route. She will sit in there for an hour or more without peeing. She has only peed on the carpet once, the kitchen twice, and pooped on the stairs all but one time since my last post. She KNOWS it is wrong because she will go lay down somewhere and look at me guiltily. If she hits the pad she gets praise and hugs and treats. Today she peed on the carpet right in front of me with no warning. I just don't know how to 'make' her go potty while in her pen or outside. I do not have the time available to put her out for 10, put her in her crate for 15, put her out for 10, crate for 15....especially since I noticed she pees around 3-4 times a day. I mean, I can't make her pee if she doesn't have to can I? LOL! So, an suggestions from here? She pees around 3-4 times a day and will poop at least once and occasionally twice a day. We are about to have to use her pen to block in the Christmas tree so she won't steal ornaments or pee on the tree skirt. I think we will set up the great dane crate we aren't using and place a pee pad in there to use as her pen until after the holidays. |
Get a black light and a hoover surge steam vac or equivilant from Walmart for about $125. you need to see where she has gone in the house and get the smell out. If she went on the bed you need to steam clean it too. Treat all areas in the home that she did go, after steaming, with something like NO GO. this will help also. I clean my carpets often with the steamer. you cannot believe how dirty carpet is just from routine traffic...YUCK. i have 3 furballs and when one goes than the other 2 will go right on top of it. my oldest just turned 5 and she still has accidents, especially on rainy days. good luck and keep up the good work. i see you are really trying. it does take a good year before they really get it. well at least that has been the case with mine. |

You probably mentioned this before, but did you take her to the vet to check for a medical reason? |
Ah, yes, no medical reason for it. I guess she is just having an 8 month old regression. Yes, we have a steam cleaner that we use frequently. We are treating each area with natures miracle as it happens. We bought some steam cleaner made for pet stains to use too. |
And now she just peed in the hallway. Sigh. I guess this is just a bad day for her. :-( |
We have the same problem with Kayla, although she does go outside to tee tee. Then she hits the doggie door going 90mi. an hr. and potties inside. We have done everything we know to do. My husband would get up and take her out in the middle of the night when she was little and nothing has helped. We have 2 schnauzers and 2 yorkies and she is the only one we have problems with. Even my little Dudley will go scratch on the door when he wants to go and no one taught him that. Kayla was sick a couple of days ago and she felt so bad she just laid. Even with all the problems with her I wouldn't trade her off for nothing. Hated seeing her sick. I get aggrivated too but she is our little munchkin. Good luck and I hope things turn over for the good and your baby changes. Its just like sometimes they don't get what they are suppose to do, no matter how hard we try. |
Have you tried giving her a command when she pees? Every time I take Poppy outside for potty I say "want pee pee?" at first she would just give me this blank look as if I was stupid. But I would say it every time I was going to let her out, then when she went outside I would say "go pee pee" and I would keep saying it every 15 seconds or so until she peed or pooped then praise. I dont know if this is the correct way to teach her a command but it seems to be working. If she is wandering around sniffing the floor and I say "want pee pee?" she will cry/bark and run to the back door. If she is running around the garden playing and I say "go pee pee" she will start sniffing for her spot then go pee/poop. You could try it? :) |
Again, I want to emphasize that a dog can know that poop on the floor is a bad thing, but not actually connect that with the urge to move their bowels. It can take a lot of patience. I feel silly saying this, but in some ways, potty training Thor is one of the hardest things I've ever done. If she pees in front of you, you need to clap your hands, say "no", and immediately take her outside or to her pad. Say "this is where you POTTY". Then you have to let it go. If she is having accidents that you aren't immediately catching, then you need to watch her more closely. I had a really hard time accepting just how much time and attention it would take to get Thor potty trained. There were two weeks where I pretty much did nothing but watch him. Now, you may not have that time. But if you don't, accept that it will take that much longer for her to learn. Have you tried the umbilical cord method? Also, are you taking her out every two hours? I would take her out, give her the potty command, and then wait her out. Also, try to find signs that she is thinking about going. Sniffing around the floor is a big flag. |
When I got my first baby ( Sophie ) she was not house broken and I tried everything, diapers, pads you name it, I did it. I never gave up on her and it took over a year but she finally got to the point where she would come to me and whine cause she needed to go out. It was the hardest thing I have ever done but I did it. It takes a lot of time and patience these little fur babies. Sadie is pad trained half the time and pees everywhere else half the time but I just keep going with her. Scooter has an accident from time to time but he is pretty good now. Just know that you can do this and praise, praise , praise her when she is good, it will happen. |
