Is tapping a dog's nose for punishment a good idea? I don't want to use violence to punish my puppy but is tapping his nose works?? You use your fingers or tape? Tape for how long?... |
I'm sorry, I am not sure if you are talking about "tapping-like a knocking, tap tap" or "taping-you mention tape-as in Scotch Tape". I don't thump the nose and have never used tape (so sorry I am just not sure which you are referring to). We use a water bottle set on stream (rather than spray). It works great for the dogs and cats. :) |
I grew up that when dogs are bad you tap there nose but when I got Callie if I did it to her (not hard) she would nip my finger and then run like haha I got you last plus it can teach dogs to be afraid of hands. I am a big fan of the squirt bottle it doesn't hurt them but they dont like it and learn pretty fast what it means. Now me and Callie have this thing where when I put my finger toward her like a few inches from her nose she will put her nose to my finger for a second its like one of our special ways we say love ya but if she is mad at me she wont do it and she will not do it with anyone else but me. |
Do you mean taping the nose!? I've never heard of that, and I do not think it should be done! |
I would say be very careful tapping a dog on the nose, because there are a lot of very delicate nerves and blood vessels. A rolled up newspaper under the shin would work best. I read the mothers grab the pups by the scruff when they are naughty, so that's what I do if Teegy has to be disciplined. He already knows, they already know they have been naughty, and he knows that means mum isn't happy. I pick him up and he gets a good telling off. |
Put some pennies in a can and shake it whenever he is bad. He will soon learn to stop the behavior without having to touch. Your hands should be used to love him not hit or tap. |
I wouldn't tap or tape... I find myself saying "are you kiddding me?" lol....he stops on a dime, whatever he is doing...lol.. |
I'm confused by the question..especially "fingers or tape"..I was thinking tape as in Scotch Tape:eek: Either way I agree with Lisette, coins in a can works well :) |

 Another thing that works with puppies is directing their behavior to more constructive things. For example, when they chew things they should not, stop them and give them something they can chew and say good boy/girl. You always want to keep the mood positive. You don't want a puppy doing negative things for attention! They key word in successful training: Praise! :) Good luck and enjoy your puppy! |
what my vet told me to do is takea rolled up news paper and swat the ground beside him real hard but not to hit him. Also I just tell him no or AH AH real loude and clap my hnds real loud |

Have you ever had your nose Tapped? No Tapping....or taping! |
We were taught to tap under the chin never on top because they become skiddish to hands coming to pet or even a human offering a hand to sniff first. And they tend to nip or bite then. or to cower and act afraid. I have been told in training by very experienced trainers to do this also. But I myself have only used it on my bigger dogs. Collies, shepareds and labs. But I have had to use it once or twice when Cooper had bit me for something I was tring to do to him. (Trim toenails, mostly) But only once or twice. Now I use a sonic noise maker or a rattle and that works good . But he is almost 3 yrs old too. Hope this helps. Cheryl |
 i dont agree with tapping or taping , a big thumbs down to both :thumbdown:thumbdown love jill n poppy xx :aimeeyork |
You should never hit a dog for any reason. Tapping a dog in the face only makes them fearful of human hands which is obviously not a good thing. Please consider taking a puppy class or basic obedience class where you will learn effective positive behavioral interventions that will work a lot better and you and your dog will be happier! |
I think your dog should always be confident that when your hand approaches it will be a good thing. Otherwise you may end up with a dog that shies or runs away when you approach, or even bites. |
I would have to agree no tapping or taping (I think the OP meant tapping). Your dog needs to learn the meaning of the word "No" and tapping is not the solution. I used the pennies in a can to get her attention and then corrected Sophie Kate. I try very hard not to use punishment on my Yorkie that I would not want used on me and tapping or taping my nose would be considered cruel so the same goes for my Yorkie. |

And to whoever said they tap their dog "under the chin" you really shouldn't do that. Doesn't matter where you tap/hit, you are teaching them to fear your hands. In fact, when a dog is fearful it is suggested that one not reach to pet that dog on his head, rather reach under the chin as it is less threatening. |

I do the pennies in a can or squirt with water (usually reserved for out-of-control barking). |
Not really! Yorkies are pretty sensitive and you can make them fearful of your hands which wont help with training. I use a spray bottle or pennies in a can for mine and that gets the point accross |

To a dog attention is attention - good or bad. The best thing to do is ignore behavior you don't want. Reward the behavior you do want. They live for our attention and pretty soon they are going to figure out what gets them that. Puppy class is great! I highly recommend it. |

I wouldn't tap or tape a dog's nose!! I tried pennies in a can and he just barked like crazy. I find the tone of my voice works best. Last night I was giving him his medication (that he doesn't like) and he turned around and showed his teeth. I said to him in a very stern voice- You no bite Mommy. Now go sit in your bed! Then after a minute or two I gave him his medicine and a great big hug. |
You shouldn't be using any kind of physical punishment for dogs, big or small, they'll just learn to fear you and that is not a good thing. I just clap my hands and that gets Rizzo's attention and I can then correct him by giving him something else to do that isn't bad. I taught him to stop barking this way as well, so now (at least when we're inside and there isn't an intruder trying to pet him outdoors) he'll stop barking when I tell him "Quiet" and I've never ever laid a bad hand on him...or taped him! That is awful, imagine putting tape from your scalp down around your mouth (as I'm assuming you'd tape his mouth??) and then tear it off. Is that a good feeling? Use positive reinforcement and you'll have a well behaved dog that loves you (not fears you) |

I just use the dogs name with a sharp NO after when my dogs are doing something wrong and if they are being stubborn a clap or two and it works. I agree with the others, hitting a dog or any animal for that matter just shouldnt be done. It makes them afraid and defensive and more likely to bite.. You wouldnt like to be hit right,?? We teach our kids not to hit, why would we hit our pets??? |
