Help!!! I am ready to give up my dog!! I welcome all suggestions. Ziggy is 2 1/2 years old male and has been with me since he was 4 months old. During this time it has not been possible to house train him. I have tried everything and can just not take away. Today I discovered that he has peed all over a $1200 chair. My white carpet is ruined and he has peed on the couches as well. I am currently not working and I take Ziggy out approximately 5 - 6 times a day. He does let me know he has to go, but he is still relieving himself wherever he sees fit. I am sure you ask why I let him roam free. I try not to, I have a barricade which he routinely knocks down. If left in the crate he will relieve himself. I've even tried to put food in the crate, but he still goes. He just move away from it. I tried trainers here in Michigan, but they only took my money. I concede the problem is probably mine and the dog's. The catch is I have gotten a job in a new state. I will be away from home at least 10 hours a day. I can't leave him home and I can't afford daycare. I love this dog and he loves me. I don't know what to do. Can anyone suggest a reputable trainer in the Alexandria, Louisiana area? If not, does anyone know how I can get him adopted to a good family who knows how to work with him. |
I think some people use bellybands. Have you tried that? I think it's like a belt you put around your dog's pee pee area with a pad inside. It works like a diaper. |
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried diapers before and he chewed them off. Perhaps, I'll try again. |
This is the Agility and Obedience forum, for housebreaking you should post on the "Training forum". Training - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community See this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...ebreaking.html, and read the rules. The website I have linked offers excellent suggestions. You really need to start from scratch, if you carpet is ruined, it means you haven't been cleaning every accident with an enzyme cleaner, so Ziggy thinks the carpet is a giant pee pad. I think I would retrain Ziggy to go on pee pads, but this means starting at step one and following the advice exactly. You really need to clean the items with an enzyme cleaner and again, follow the directions, otherwise nothing you do will work. There are black lights you can purchase that will show you the urine stains, because some are invisible to the naked eye. If a dog smells any urine, he has a biological need to mark it. Also has Ziggy been fixed, some of this may be due to marking, not just urine. |
DO NOT USE BELLY BANDS!!! It will not solve the problem. From what you posted earlier, it sounds like the crate is too big for crate training. Since you will be away for 10 hours at a time, you might want to consider an expen and puppy pads. Have your carpet cleaned with an enzyme cleaner if you haven't already. If you cleaned with anything but an enzyme cleaner, you might not smell the pee, but your dog does. To him, your house is one giant bathroom. Belly bands are great to use temporarily and when you can change it frequently. Otherwise, your pup will end up wearing his pee around all day. Imagine the damage that could do to his skin. |

Thanks for the suggestions. I posted here because it seemed like an obedience issue, he also won't listen to a word I say. I will review the 10 steps. I will also start from starch. I had already thought an exercise pen and pee pads might work. I appreciate the support!!! |
I grew up around Alex and still have family there. I can ask if they know of a trainer in that area. Good luck. |
@Baby Yorkie thank you so much. I really appreciate it. We will leave this coming weekend. |
You've been given good advice. Good Luck. I hope you can find something that work. One more suggestion,. Get barriers that he cannot knock down. They need to either be attached to the wall, or use a tension one. I have one across my kitchen/living room doorwy, that is just 3 sections of an xpen. |
