How to control the barking
 

Louis is always looking out the window, and he barks at everyone he sees (not just people, squirrels too:p.) How do I get him to stop barking? He is by no means aggressive. He will bark at our guests through the window, but when they come into our house he acts like they are his new friend. (He only barks at people when he is looking out the window, when we take a walk or go shopping he doesn't bark at anyone.) Does anyone else experience this?

Heck, tell me if you find out an answer. My little ones goes to work with me to my office everyday and she barks at almost everyone, even people she sees everyday.:eek: I think it is a recreational activity for her. :(The Fedex guy is very nice, but I am sure he is over it.

That's funny that she even barks at people she knows! (It would be so nice to be able to take Louis to work with me.) You are lucky to be able to do that.:)

My trainer said to say "Shh" when they bark...then, the second they stop say ""yes" and quickly give her a tiny bit of a high quality treat (cheese, steak etc..) Do it over and over. I'm working on the door bell bark.. mine even bark at a doorbell sound from the TV. Good luck

I've found in my Uni that she barks out of excitement. When someone's at the door, it must either be a visitor for her, or someone delivering a package for her.

She will also bark when we have stopped walking on our walks, or not walking fast enough.

She also barks when she wants me to throw the ball, and I haven't thrown it yet.

Or she will bark simply bc she wants my attention for some reason or another. My point is, that dogs don't bark just to bark. They are trying to tell you something. If you ignore them, they will just continue to bark and bark. I have found that if you acknowledge it and find out what they want, they will stop. Now, whether or not you give them what they want is something else altogether. Such as, doggy barking at squirrel. I don't want doggy running after squirrel, so what i would do, is go look at the squirrel and say, oh yes squirrel! Come on over here, look toy! Or someother distracting thing to get their mind off the squirrel.

As for throwing the ball, she will do this when we are at a park playing, so I allow her to do it. She is telling me she is ready to fetch.

Some people use electronic devices to control barking, which I am against, even the ones that don't shock. It doesn't find the reason whey they are barking, just tells them to stop. They won't understand why they can't bark. While people have had success with those devices, it's just something I wouldn't use, that's just me.

That's actually really helpful. I'm having trouble currently with my little one barking in his cage at night when we go to bed. We've gotten in the routine where he falls asleep with me and I slowly get him comfortable in his cage. If he wakes up though and recognizes he's in his cage he starts to whine and bark pretty much until I give in and try to calm him down. I have his cage set up so he can see me at night but I think that makes it worse. Last night I actually slept on the floor next to his cage because that was the only thing that seemed to calm him down and help him fall asleep. What did you all do when your pups were babies??

This is what Yorkies do..they are wonderful Watch Dogs...they are companion animals and want to communicate to you what is going on. While it can drive you nuts I found all it took was one day with a spray bottle (full of water) for me..Now all I have to do is pick up the bottle..barking stops immediately..(well that is not entirely true - Ms. Bella has to have the last word)...

People have been very lucky with a soft cage they could put on the table next to the bed or even in the bed so the little ones could see them..

Yeah I think I'm gonna put his cage on the night stand tonight and see if that makes a difference...mommy needs some sleep!! :p

I hired a trainer a while back who told me to put a couple of coins in an empty water bottle. When Cooper barks I'm supposed to shake the bottle. He absolutely hates the noise and usually stops barking. However, I always have to have a bottle nearby to get him to stop!

I've been using a water-filled spray bottle when Sydney barks...I just ended up with a very wet dog.

I agree w/ captnoonies advice. However, we do use the Pet Parade Bark Repeller when at my dads house because it's a total of 3 dogs when I'm there. If one barks, the other two bark even if they have NO idea what they are barking at.... Jackson will literally just bark because the other is barking. It's quite humorous but VERY annoying. The bark repeller looks like a remote control and makes a sound they don't like. We point it at them, say "quiet" and they listen. Now I can just put my hands to my lips and say a firm 'quiet' and it usually works. It would be a mad house over there (well MORE of a mad house) without the bark repeller. 1 dog is so much more easily controlled than 3. With just Jackson, he rarely barks unless someone walks in the door, that's it. And when he does bark, it's easy to quiet him down really fast, and not a problem. I don't discourage playful barking, and will even get down on the ground with him and bark and growl with him (weirdo... maybe! LOL :P) He knows what barking is obnoxious and not appreciated or allowed compared to playful and fun barking.
