I finally resorted to the spray bottle, a little one that shoots like a water pistol. The first couple days, I came home with a wet dog. :p
I can now take both Max and Teddy out together and pass their barking triggers quietly -- almost all of them. There is a Chow that Max hates with a passion.
I always give the command to be quiet or 'no bark' when I hear them getting ready. Sometimes I shoot the pavement in front of the dogs if they do not obey.
As you wrote, just the site of the bottle is usually enough. In the house, I acknowledge that they are barking (as Capt Noonie recommends) and I look to see if it is important. If not, I give the quiet command and pick up the bottle if necessary. |
