I was wrong and contradicted myself when I suggested holding all food after a certain hour -- was thinking about older, larger dogs. Although it really isn't necessary even then. |
My notes in blue below. Quote:
When I got Uni i put a bell on her collar (still do) and when she moved even the slightest bit in the middle of the night, I woke up and took her to try to pee. I did this several times a night for weeks and was consistent. She was potty trained by the time she was 5 months. You've only put in a bit over 2 weeks, you still have a long way to go. You have to be consistent. With whatever method you choose to try, really try at it for a few months before you say you give up and try something else. it takes time for them to get it, and if you give up too soon and try something else, you will just confuse him more. |
the whole idea about crate training is that a pup is not going to pee or poo where she sleeps ... or eats. at least that is the theory. Your pup wants out of there afterwards and be with you . My suggestion would be an expen with pee pads , and have your little one closer to you. I honestly had no problems with my two when they were puppies using the pee pads , sometimes slip ups would occur , but no big deal. When my Shih tzu was brand new , she was so small she could fit in my hand. I slept on the couch for the next few months with her laying on the carpet right next to me. SHe caught on right away where the pee pads were and what they were for thanks to my yorkie . Neither of my pups had their food or water withheld . I believe it is wrong to do that esp. in such a tiny puppy . the smaller they are the moer food they need to eat , and potty , pee. My yorkie is now over 2yrs old and goes potty both on the pee pads and outside , but she is older . The shih tzu uses the pads always , and is just over a yr old. Never any problems , no crying , or anything . Patience and consistency is what it takes to fully train a dog. esp when so young and small. hang in there ! |
I closed mine in the kitchen during the day and had him sleep with me at night. The minute he stirred, I took him out to potty. During the day, I took him out at last once every hour, right after he ate, and right after a play period. He is both paper trained and outside trained. He is also trained to use a tap bell when he needs to go out. For some strange reason, he won't poop in the house, will only pee on occasion. I got Zeke when he was 8 weeks old and 2#. He was an only child and very much ready to come to his new home. It took him maybe two hours to adjust. |
I suggest putting them in the room with you right next to your bed with a blanket over the kennel and when they cry you can tap the top so they know you're there and say a word such as "quiet". They will eventually wear out and since they are right next to you they can hear you there but it's dark in their kennel so they should recognize that it's night time. The minute you hear that the pup is awake, you take them outside and make sure you associate a word such as "potty" and give them a lot of praise for going outside then come right back in and put them in the kennel. I try to play with my pup right before bed to tire her. I got Winnie at 8 weeks and we first had her in our room in a corner and she could see us but the next week when i moved her next to me with the blanket she slept 8 hours and has since but with a potty break in the middle of the night. I would make sure your dog has a schedule. She's 15 weeks now and sleeps though the night. I never take her water or food away from her. She is kenneled while I am at work in the morning then a lunch break and she goes back in the kennel. I do use her food as treats to make sure she is eating. Also we trained her on a bell to go outside. Good luck! |
