Just because you leave food and water out doesn't mean this pup will eat. Yorkies are notorious for not eating and getting hypoglycemia. That can kill a pup quickly. Please listen to everyones advice

Your statement "I have never in my life had a dog"...should be a wake up call! You DO NOT have the experience to care for a tiny 6 week old puppy. Please talk to the breeder! It is her responsibility, not yours! The best way to care for the puppy is to leave the puppy with the breeder! Leaving a 6 week old puppy alone for the time while you are at work is asking for trouble! Please take ALL the advice you have been given, we are not being rude, just concerned!

Wow - I can't believe you responded that way! :eek: These aren't opinions - these are answers/suggestions from people who have experience with this breed!

Potty training is the least of your worries at this age!!! You won't have to worry about potty training if your puppy dies!

They need to be kept warm, they need to play with littermates, they need to eat and if they don't - they need to be forced fed! Toy breeds are different than larger breeds so any advice given "in general" doesn't apply.

If the breeder can't take care of these puppies/puppy then perhaps she should look into giving them to a rescue. If you can't allocate the appropriate amount of time to this puppy... then maybe you should consider the same.

And if you don't like what you've been told here, then please feel free to do some research by reading about toys breeds/Yorkshire Terriers. There is plenty of information available - all you have to do is read.

I know you think you're helping by taking this puppy from whatever environment it's in but you really need to know a few more things about taking care of it before you bring it home.

You and the breeder are breaking the law...there are laws in place to protect these dogs...You appear to not really care about the dog but helping the breeder out...6 WEEKS IS TO YOUNG and especially if you work all day.

Listen to the good advice you've been given!

It seems like your sister's friend (the breeder) is just as inexperienced as you are at this. They probably just thought they could make some money by breeding the dog, and selling the puppies, you see it ended in tradegy for the mama, learn from their mistakes! The pups should at least stay with their litter mates. I'm not an expert far from it, but I have been doing a lot of research in preparation for my baby coming home, and one of the first things they say even at 10-12 weeks is that the change of living situattion is very stressful on the puppy. It is very clear that puppies should not be separated until at a minimiun 9-10 weeks... that 3 weeks is crucial remember there are approx 7 years for every human year. It is also said that when first gettign a yorkie puppy you should take off 4-5days of work if possible. It seems like you are trying to help the puppy but the best way to do that is to find another alternative. Maybe post your location and reach out to a breeder who maybe willing to give the dogs the care they need for the next month, and cut your loses at monetary rather than loses of death. Please do the right thing.

Just a suggestion...if you must take this pup now, you could contact a local dog club and maybe find a local breeder or someone with experience that could help you raise this pup past this crucial stage in his life. Even a 12 week old pup should not be left alone for that many hours, and socialization is a whole different story...

I understand that the momma of this puppy died :( BUT whomever bred the female who passed away should have fully understood the consequences of breeding and with that comes the responsibility to be surrogate mom in the event of a dog's death. This responsibility would include raising and taking care of any puppies if something were to happen until they are an appropriate age to go to their new homes~which is NEVER 6 weeks old for a puppy let alone a Yorkie puppy. Whether or not this is the answer that you are looking for, it is the answer that you will receive.

I'm wondering if there are litter mates to this puppy and where they are going. This situation is beyond heartbreaking and seems to be happening more and more with irresponsible pet owners breeding because they feel it is their right. :(

Now to answer your question, potty training is quite easy, although it is a long process. Leaving a potty pad for the first time does not mean a puppy of 6 weeks, 12 weeks, or even a one year old will know what that means. You will need to decide whether crate training, or an expen will be right for you. For either one, you MUST take your baby to the pad every two hours, or maybe 1 hr in your case since your baby is so young, meaning his/her bladder will be very very tiny, and give a potty command like "go pee pee" or something. Wait 15 to 20 mins and if nothing happens in that time, take him/her back to the crate or expen and wait 10 mins and try again until he/she potties successfully. PRAISE PRAISE PRAISE if he/she does. You'll also need a good accident cleanup spray, like Nature's Miracle. Use it as indicated or the enzymes won't have enough time to do their magic and your baby will be able to smell pee and will want to go there again. #1 key to making this work, BE CONSISTENT. Buy a timer if you have to, to make sure you are taking your baby to the pad every hour or two on the hour. Keep the pad in the exact same place. Don't move it, you want him/her to learn it's location. Remember that accidents happen, and getting emotional will only make things worse and confuse your baby. Quickly clean up any accidents and try again. Your baby will learn to use the piddle pads with time.

However, in order for the above to work, you will need a baby that is alive and well. Potty training itself is a time consuming process that requires you to be available 24 hours a day 7 days a week, in order for him/her to be successful, especially since your baby will be as young as you described. In order to keep a baby that young alive, you will need constant feedings in which you will need to actively help to make sure your baby is eating enough. You will need to keep an eye on him/her and make sure they are getting enough sleep, and keep an eye out for the hypoglycemic attacks that mean your baby does not have proper blood sugar and you will need to feed your baby some nutrical in order to get him/her feeling better. And if all goes well, and your baby grows up to be a physically healthy dog, you and you alone will be responsible to properly socialize your furbaby so that it responds properly to life with people and other animals. Something mom and or it's litter mates would have helped to teach these basic life lessons.
