6 week old puppy pad training I am getting my little baby at 6 weeks old and I will be at work 9 hours a day 5 days a week and I dont want to have to worry about my yorkie having to go to the bathroom so i wanted to puppy pad train him. Is this something hard to do? I heard its easy and sometimes I hear its not a easy thing. Advice needed...Thanks! |
I would worry about him getting hypoglycemia more than the potty training right now. That is to young to be away from momma. Yorkies need to be 12 weeks before going home. They learn alot of things from being with mom and other litter mates. I would ask the breeder to keep him longer. |
Agreed... 6 weeks is WAYYYY to young to be bringing him home. Also, with you being gone 9 hours there is a HIGH risk of this puppy suffering from hypoglycemia. I would contact your breeder and ask them to keep the puppy until at least 12 weeks. |
Please answer my question....I didnt ask for your opinion on that...u dont know what the circumstances are of the situation. thanks |
Way too young for a puppy to be away from their mama, and Way too long for the puppy to be alone, first talk to your breeder not reputable breeder will let a puppy go that early, second, you need to find someone that can come in your home and visit with this puppy once he is home.toy breeds should be check at least twice a day if alone for that leght of time. if you buy this baby this early and leave him along this long, YOU are looking to have a VERY SICK puppy in your hands in NO time.. hugs, Carmen in nj |
I would have to agree with the last three post. 6 weeks is very young and not safe at all. I would not recommend leaving a young pup home for 9 hrs each day...Also, I would ask the breeder to hold on to the pup for a few more weeks. If they are not willing to do that I would question buying a pup from them..JMO |
you won't like my answer either. At 6 weeks I don't even think they should be alone for that long. Too many things that can go wrong - they're very VERY tiny at this age. We don't know the circumstances but it's not fair to a very young puppy to be left alone when only 6 weeks old. Training is going to be the least of the problems that could come up when you aren't there It's different with larger breeds - they're much more hearty |
his mom passed away so I have no choice...so thanks for your advice. Can someone please help advice me on the puppy pads?? Also is there anything or any food I can give my baby since he so young? |

best of luck with your training. Carmen in nj |
I dont think the dog is in a good sitaution right now. She is my good friends sister so I wanted to be there to help. Like I said I have NEVER taking care of a pup before so my idea was to leave food out and water and have a creat for him and just shut the bathroom door where he would be. You think that would be to much room for him to rome around in? Also what kind of food you think I should leave him??? I could come home for lunch to see him. |

I had a momma pass away when she had a litter. I kept the pups for over 12 weeks with their litter mates. No way I would have let them go before 12 weeks even more so with mom passing away. |

I am just freaking out because I am about to get this little baby and I have never in my life had a dog and I just want to care for it the best I can with me being gone for 9 hours a day 5 days a week. I feel horrible doing that but its only going to be for 3 1/2 months then my hubby will be back from his deployment and then the baby will only be left at home for only 4 hours a day. Please please ANYONE that can give me advice It is much needed. |

I got a puppy too early once and for no reason he passed during the hours of 3 am and 9 am. That is all it takes for them to pass away. My pup was 9 wks |

Potty training is the least of your worries at this age!!! You won't have to worry about potty training if your puppy dies! |

Ok - you have been given the information on what to feed this puppy. (Carmen in nj) You have been told what kind of area to keep you puppy in. You have acknowledged the fact that you have never owned a dog much less a toy breed. Please LISTEN to what you have been told! Bringing home a 6 wk old Yorkie is like bringing home a newborn infant! Would you leave a newborn home alone for 9 hrs a day? I hope not! You won't have to worry about the puppy peeing on the pad if it doesn't eat. It's just that "simple"! It's not a good idea to take a 6 wk old puppy home and just leave it for 9 hrs a day! You're not going to get someone here to say "it's ok" because it's not. Either take some time off of work so that you can be there or please look into other options. They need to be kept warm, they need to play with littermates, they need to eat and if they don't - they need to be forced fed! Toy breeds are different than larger breeds so any advice given "in general" doesn't apply. If the breeder can't take care of these puppies/puppy then perhaps she should look into giving them to a rescue. If you can't allocate the appropriate amount of time to this puppy... then maybe you should consider the same. And if you don't like what you've been told here, then please feel free to do some research by reading about toys breeds/Yorkshire Terriers. There is plenty of information available - all you have to do is read. I know you think you're helping by taking this puppy from whatever environment it's in but you really need to know a few more things about taking care of it before you bring it home. |
You and the breeder are breaking the law...there are laws in place to protect these dogs...You appear to not really care about the dog but helping the breeder out...6 WEEKS IS TO YOUNG and especially if you work all day. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ld-yorkie.html |
Listen to the good advice you've been given! It seems like your sister's friend (the breeder) is just as inexperienced as you are at this. They probably just thought they could make some money by breeding the dog, and selling the puppies, you see it ended in tradegy for the mama, learn from their mistakes! The pups should at least stay with their litter mates. I'm not an expert far from it, but I have been doing a lot of research in preparation for my baby coming home, and one of the first things they say even at 10-12 weeks is that the change of living situattion is very stressful on the puppy. It is very clear that puppies should not be separated until at a minimiun 9-10 weeks... that 3 weeks is crucial remember there are approx 7 years for every human year. It is also said that when first gettign a yorkie puppy you should take off 4-5days of work if possible. It seems like you are trying to help the puppy but the best way to do that is to find another alternative. Maybe post your location and reach out to a breeder who maybe willing to give the dogs the care they need for the next month, and cut your loses at monetary rather than loses of death. Please do the right thing. |
Just a suggestion...if you must take this pup now, you could contact a local dog club and maybe find a local breeder or someone with experience that could help you raise this pup past this crucial stage in his life. Even a 12 week old pup should not be left alone for that many hours, and socialization is a whole different story... Hope you find a solution.:aimeeyork |
I understand that the momma of this puppy died :( BUT whomever bred the female who passed away should have fully understood the consequences of breeding and with that comes the responsibility to be surrogate mom in the event of a dog's death. This responsibility would include raising and taking care of any puppies if something were to happen until they are an appropriate age to go to their new homes~which is NEVER 6 weeks old for a puppy let alone a Yorkie puppy. Whether or not this is the answer that you are looking for, it is the answer that you will receive. I'm wondering if there are litter mates to this puppy and where they are going. This situation is beyond heartbreaking and seems to be happening more and more with irresponsible pet owners breeding because they feel it is their right. :( |
