Heeeeelp! New puppy literally barking ALL night!!
 
Last night was our new pup's second night with us. Natalie is 14 weeks old, we have her in the kitchen in an ex-pen with her crate, pee pads, water & food. The fist night she whined/ cried periodically, but had stretches that she was quiet. In an effort to ward this off, we played with her for 20 or so minutes before putting her to bed for the night last night (in an attempt to tire her out). No such luck. :( I'm not exaggerating when I say she barked for 7 straight hours. How can an animal that weighs less than 4 pounds have the stamina to do that? :confused: She would occasionally stop for 10 or so minutes to catch her breath, but it just went on and on at top volume. Finally at 6 a.m. I got up with her and of course she was just fine.

I know getting up and going to her will reinforce the behavior so no one went out to the kitchen at all last night. We all work or go to school so I'm not sure how many more nights of only sleeping in briefs fits and starts we can all take. She's too little and not potty trained, so sleeping with us won't work. If anyone has suggestions, this sleep-deprived family would be very grateful!

buy a little pantie to put it on her and let her jump in bed with ya!!!Ill bet she will sleep with you all night!!;)

For the first couple days I had Gizmo he did the same thing. I would literally lay down next to his crate at night with my blanket and when he was sleeping I would sneak away, but leave my blanket bunched up against his crate so it was like I was still there. Try putting something with your scent on it in her xpen, it will comfort her.

Our Little One barked and kept us up pretty much for the first two weeks. What we learned is that its best to keep him in an open space with baby gates or in a crate from which the dog is able to see out. If you keep him in a room with the door shut and no light the little puppy will freak out. We started off by keeping our Little One in the Kitchen which was far from our bedroom and he would get so sad as soon as we were out of his sight. So we moved him to our bathroom which is directly connected to our room and left the door open with the baby gate. His bed was facing our bedroom and he had a light on, he had a cozy blanket and toys.

Not my first choice, but I considered it as a desperate last measure. :)

You're a much person than I am- not willing to sleep on my kitchen floor, but good suggestion to give her something that smelled like me. I did that when my schnauzer was a puppy and she had to be confined to her crate.

I didnt think so , but at this point anything that will get you sleep, I used to say I would never give my babies a bottle in bed.. I did that too LOL.. anything for a little peace... Mine slept with me every night!! maybe you can try just putting the ex pen in your room , perhaps she is just afraid to be all alone.

I talked to the breeder we got Natalie from (she has been SO wonderful!). She said she was used to sleeping in a pen in her bedroom and that she thought she could go from 10:00- 5:00 in the crate (without pottying) so try putting her crate in my room where she could see/hear me. We started out with a little plastic carrier type kennel, but Natalie already figured out how to hop on top of it and peer over her ex-pen. Only a matter of time before she jumped, so I switched her to my schnauzer's old cage-type wire crate. Found the divider to make it smaller and even just being in it in the kitchen she seems happier. Maybe she didn't like not being able to see anything when she was in the plastic crate. I'm going to try putting her in the crate in my room tonight. Keeping my fingers crossed. We are all starting to get a little delirious from lack of sleep and tomorrow is Mon.!!

I hear ya! I talked big before I had my children, but sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do to make it through the day (or in this case night)! ;)

Your puppy is a baby and needs to be close to you, put the pen in your room so she can see you,every one will sleep then, once she toilet trained she can sleep with you;)

LOL...mine have always slept in an xpen in my bedroom and never a problem. well, kind of a problem. I'm not allowed to leave the room... If I'm caught getting out of bed and leaving the room for too long they start up. DH can leave forever, they don't care, but not me. I have to stay in bed...LOL If I fake 'em out, I can sneak and play on the 'puter a bit. But god forbid they figure it out. Soo, the problem is, they want to be wherever you are. Not necessarily in your bed, but at least in your room. The kitchen is too far. Yorkies bond to you and feel the abandonment keenly when separated.

They really are lap dogs aren't they? She was out like a light on my lap this evening while I made a grocery list and sorted coupons. Lol.

Exercise pen. Looks like a low fence that is usually configured in an octagon or square shape. Gives the dog more room than a crate, but confines them within a given space. Good if where you need to keep them doesn't lend itself easily to being gated off.

I think moving her to your room will make a big difference. Mine all slept in my room and settled down pretty good at night. Hope you get some sleep tonight.
