Just keep at it with Duncan. Every doorway in your house, you go through first, them have him follow. He'll get the hint real soon. It also teaches him to always look and follow you for direction. He will realize he doesn't do anything unless you tell him to or give the ok too. Easier said than done, I know, but just keep working at it. He'll get it! :) |
Great Advice. I swear, Maddie was born knowing how to act. She just gets it. I don't remember training her to stay. She just does and always waits for me to call her to me. She does need to work on the come command when we are outside. Cooper, on the other hand, needs some of this training. She is the wild and rowdy one. The *thought* of training her just exhausts me. It is like a wild west show doing the simpliest of tasks with her... (OMGish I'm one of those parents I can't stand who let thier child run wild because it's easier than fixing the bahavior. :p) Actually, I know the reason to this. Maddie was with her litter until she was a little over 11 weeks. Cooper was sent to her previous owners at 5 weeks! :thumbdown |
i think Duncan just had too much freedom before, he does what ever he wants to do Quote:

I have a screen door now, and it has really helped keep Suzi inside the apt . We are on the second floor . She does go out at times , however, never goes down the stairs, she is scared to . If somebody comes to the door , she can't get out, because the screen door stops her. She loves people, and just jumps up to say hi. My son has taught her the stay command, and we use it all the time with her. SHe is very responsive to it. Repetion is the key when training dogs. |
I.... feel for you as my Lucy ran out clear to the street this very week. I too am trying to teach stay as a way to keep her from running out before me. You have received some wonderful advice which I have learned from also. My sweet puppy Maty died running into the street after a squirrel 5 years ago and was hit by a car, and I hope to never have to go through that again or hear of that happening again. |

I don't know about anyone else's furbutts, but Finnigan finds running through my garage door/front door irresistible. Luckily we live on a dead end. He is trained to sit and wait at all exit doors of my house, but if he's off leash and someone opens the door before I can get to it... he's outta here. No matter how loud I yell WAIT! Its so scary.... if you can get a baby gate to block the doors please do! I don't think you can be too careful in this situation. Good luck!!! |
front door well we have tried everything..and abbey stills tries to race thru the door. Our grandkids are coming this summer and hubby is installing gates at doors. theyre 8yr and will forget!:animal-pa |

This is great advice. Raley is not allowed through any door unless he is behind us....I have taught him that he must sit/stay and wait. It is something that I work with him on during each day. Consistency is the key!!! |
I am really happy someone posted about this. We will be teaching Trixie the stay command (rather than the come command)....and will also train her to let us through the door first. Thanks for the great advice. :animal-pa I want to try and do it right this time around...my other dog had me trained lol!! |
