Duncan just rushs out the door which ever door it is. He just likes to the first one to sneek in and out the bedroom and he also know how to push open doors..

I told him sit and stay before the incident, he did listen and did good. Duncan never dares to step out the front door before for some reason, and it all changed in a sudden for some reason. He was trying to say hi to post lady, she total neglected him, then he started to run around.. It may also because it's been storm for sevel days, he just needs to run around?
I yeld Duncan to come back or at least to me, he just turned around glanced at me then kept going.

I never thought about I should also set up rules in backyard. I should do that too, Duncan is going there and stay there when I dont have time to saty there with him or he just dont go when he should..

Please make my Duncan freeze when he hears stay when ever too..

Totally agree! Jackson typically always walks out the door AFTER me and it helps a ton. We can have the door wide open (we have sliding glass door that leads out 90 acres of farmland - so not much he can get into anyways!) and he will stay if I tell him to and not go out of the door. It takes a lot of patience and training.

I made the mistake of always using "stay" and then "come" so I don't think Jackson understood 'come' as a single command without 'stay'. We've been working on coming when called w/o being in a stay first.

My two know that as soon as I put on my shoes I am going somewhere. Most of the time it's off to work but they start getting antzy. Before I open the door I tell them to stay and I can open the door and they just look out. It works for me but they don't pay attention to my husband so we are constantly on guard

I agree good advice. My dogs are leashed when we go out, so when we go to the door to go out, they stand there waiting to be leashed, when we come in the door they stand untill I unleash them. If they were to go to the door when someone came in or the kids ran out the door and left it open some, they got a sharp NO and I removed them from the door. I started when they were tiny pups house training.. they just learned from that. Now if someone comes to the door, Tucker will go to the door but stand there, not one time has he bolted out the door. He knows he has to be on a leash to go out.However, As a safety measure, I have installed a gate that automatically shuts across my porch that stays shut all the time. :) You can never be too safe with the these little guys...

I trained my 3 to only use the BACK DOOR to go outside. It is NEVER allowed for them to go out the front door of the house for any reason. It is the same with the car~they do into the car on the back passanger side and out of the car on the driver side.

You need to incorperate this into the sit-stay and never allowing them to go out the door ahead of you. It is all consistance and training.

When I first brought Pebbles home when she was 5 months old she dashed out the back gate, front door, back door you name it. My son opened the door for the UPS man and out she went. He's was chasing her around the front yard with the neighbor trying to catch her and he was NOT happy! I knew this was so very very dangerous and began working with her immediatley.

Now they are only allowed outside from one door and I no longer have to worry about opening the gate either. They just stay right inside the gate and he can come and go without worry.

I would suggest in the beginning to use a harness and leash when you open the door. Have someone help you by coming to the door and when you open the door to let them into the house, STEP ON THE LEASH so there is no danger of her running out. Tell her to sit-stay give treat. Open the door while stepping on the leash and if she stands correct her. Make her sit again. Use this technique until you are sure that she is following your directing. Then you can move on to not stepping on the end of the leash when you open the door.

I would suggest not using the baby gate as suggested in some of the other posts. It was very effective to use this technique and there was no danger of anyone being hurt trying to climb over a gate either.

If you are able to accomplish this you will never have to worry about opening any door and having a pup that will dart out for you.

There have been far too many stories on YT to not make this a top priority in training.

I got pretty lucky with Tobie... I never trained him to not run out the door... he just kinda picked up on it. I think it's just that he won't go outside without momma because I've never let him. It happened ONE time when he was little and all I did was turn around and run back inside and hauled butt back inside too.

Pann does this when it's raining and only when it's raining. He's getting better at listening to stay but it's frightening. When people come over they don't realize the bottom panel of glass/plastic is missing from the front door (we rent our place) and close it real quick trying to stop him and he just slips right out, luckily he get to the grass and waits for me like mommy what are you doing come on! I just thank God we don't live on a busy street.

Teddy is the same way. He will be the first to run out the doorway. He get's soo anxious when we go for walks. I didn't train him well..but that's my fault. Now I'm making sure these new girls get trained well..they are in training class so I am going to teach them not to run out doors.
