Puppy snapped at me...
 
I can't believe that my Gucci bite me tonight.. She was mauling on a plastic bottle and was chewing at the cover. I went to pull it away and she snapped at my hand and bit me I bled a little. She never did this before..What am I to do? She is 15 mts. old...

Maybe put her in an obedience class. I dunno I am in the same boat one of my dogs bite my neighbor in the foot today. It was totally unexpected this dog is normally so non agressive.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it happened again, then that is different, however, sometimes they are playing so intently and I'm sure that this sort of bite is more reaction than the fact that they know what they're doing. Does this make sense?

Ahia was really bad about that when she was younger. i was in a tizzy about it. someone on here suggested to say "ouch" and it worked. i scolded her good for it. and somehow she knew that was not the thing to do any more.
she just plain don't want you to take it away from her.
Ahia gets anythig that will drop from my dryer as i empty it. she is quick too.i used to chase her around the coffee table to take it away from her. I have learned to just offer her a treat in trade. no problems any more.

Idensise I normally do that I give her a treat for a trade...Gucci loves the fabric softner sheets as I drop them coming out of the dryer...lol I guess she just reacted to it quickly, she did come over after like as to say I'm sorry ... I forgive her..lol I just don't want her to think its ok to do....Just love these furbabies...lol thanks!

LOL. it is funny. I used to get so mad at Ahia for out smarting me. I have a 3 ft. square coffee table. she runs around it and under it. me chasing her. like a child playing keep away. In the middle of this frustrating game i have to start laughing because she is smarter than me and it shows. I really have to hand it to you people who have the patience to train for agility and the such. Love is just not enough...you got to be firm.
I know Ahia is saying "you think you can control me? yeah , well ... watch this".

Gucci was really caught up in the moment with that bottle it sounds like. Hmmmm, training issues can be so difficult at times. I don't have any expert advise to give, but maybe offer toys, treats, attention when YOU want to give it. Have her for awhile earn the things she receives.

She needs to really understand that you are the alpha dog and that she receives her happy treats/praise when she is doing something good.

Since this is the first time maybe not worry too much, but a stern NO when she does it again followed with some more trianing.

I asked a similiar question to yours, GucciMyGirl, on the clickersolutions list when Joey started growling when approached when he had a high value item. I was told to teach "drop it" and that's what I'm doing. At first, you're going to have a treat or another object to lure her away, if need be. As she drops what she has, say "drop it". Practice, practice, practice.

The experienced trainers on that list said they teach their classes that your dog should be excited anytime you approach when she's chewing on something (because your dog should think they are going to get something better). They recommend regularly taking items away on the "drop it" command. If it's something that it's okay for your dog to have, inspect it, and then you can then give it back. If not, trade for something else.

I don't think I worded this as well as they did. If I didn't make myself clear, just say so and I'll try again!

When we try to take something like a treat or toy she raises her butt up and wags her tail. She wants us to play.:D

Thanks, that helps. My baby boy turned and snarled at me tonight. He likes to run from me now when he has something he shouldn't and outside, that is most of the time. I grabbed him as he ran past and he turned snarling and trying to bite. He couldn't reach my hand. I told him very firmly no! and put in the kitchen by himself. His sister stayed outside with me. I didn't leave him alone for long because I figured he would forget why he was alone after a minute or 2..

So, you've got double the reason to teach the drop command - to keep him from snarling at you and so that he will drop things instead of running away outside. Best not to ever start the chasing them game.

I think you handled the situation just right!

I think your baby was so excited with the play she got lost in it. When Dollie, who is 1 yr old, pulls this on me I sharply say.."NO BITE"...AND STOP PLAY TIME NOW. She will come after me and I simply ignore her. I give it awhile and then we go back to play time. I think they just get excited when it's one on one as you can appreciate. Dollie knows what "NO" Means. When we are playing I make her drop her toy and I throw it across the room with fetch. I'll say "Drop It" and she does but she'll go after it if I don't grab it fast enough. Oh, these furbabies are fast and smarter than you can believe...Good Luck...Really a firm "No"...will help. She'll catch on. I also clap my hands when she is into something she should have. She'll stop right now and go to something else. ....I love my baby....

Magic is the exact same way..at first we thought it was cute and let her get away with it, but now that she is older it is no longer funny and she is still doing it at times...when she has something she dosn't want to give up she will growl at you and stuff!! We have started teaching her to drop it and come get a better treat from us...this has really started working lately, she growls less and less and is much more fun to play with!! Stop the behavior now before he gets worse at it!!! It can be stopped with time and patience...
