I wish I could say I'm special but Jamie and Beau will follow pretty much anyone around my house. I don't mind it usually. When it's a safety hazard (when I'm cooking or carrying something and can't see them, etc.) I send them to their crates and they know to stay there until I tell them it's ok to get out. (I don't even have to shut the door anymore! BTW this is way more impressive to guests than sit or roll over!) Mostly I just hate it for them. Especially when they're asleep! Sometimes if they're sleeping and I'm thirsty, I think to myself "Am I thirsty enough to wake the boys up?" Because as soon as I move they are up and hot on my trail. |
my baby Emma does that too, but i kinda like that :D |

I have a train of 3 that follow me everywhere! They keep me company when my fiance isn't home. |
I think its more of a habit, and if it bothers you it is controlable. Chuchi used to follow me too much. I don't mind if he follows me once in a while but when he does it to much I just tell him "stay there" and he does. It is very important to tell him "very good" when I come back and he hasn't followed me. If you don't say anything they will always follow out of habit. |
I am glad to see this thread, I have been conflicted about the dependency/following thing. I would like to know the mechanics behind this characteristic. On the one hand, follow the leader=good for safety and normal for puppies. On the other, get a life would be nice too. I'm trying to find the line, incessant following might work for some dog owners, but it is not that useful in my house, and it doesn't seem to apply if there's a dog across the street. Recently I started doorway STAY training when I saw it mentioned by Cap'n noonie?...Wow. All of a sudden at least the dog is pausing to get permission at EVERY doorway. I'm sure a long owner-out-of-sight STAY will be challenging and win him a lot of cookies when we get to it, for now he still sneaks on his tummy to peek where I went... I saw the accidentally-stepped-on coming a mile away, and everyone was able to give the pup a good little soft kick rather than step upon it. He probably got knocked 3 or 4 times and now keeps a good safe foot distance himself. |
My yorkie would follow me everywhere...even the bathroom. If I sat on the couch in the den, he would be right there wagging his tail and waiting to see if it was movie time...and when it was he would curl up right on the blanket covering me. I truly miss that now that he has gone on....movie night has never been the same since. :animal-pa |
Little One is like my shadow Little One is 8 months old and from the moment I wake up to the minute I go to sleep he's basically my shadow. He loves to follow me from room to room and now that he is used to my working schedule he's gotten better about being left alone. The first 2 months were hard for me because I felt he was so terrified to be alone. Now, I actually enjoy having him around all the time when i'm home, he's like my little helper, he will watch me do all my chores and then we play on my days off. I think its kinda sweet that he wants to be around me that much :). |
What I was told when I got Chuchi was to teach him that you would always come back. At first I would tell him to stay and go to another room at first 1 min, 5 min, 10 min, etc... Now he follows once in a while but most of the time rather lie on his bed and if I tell him to stay he listens. Prizing help. Hope this is useful to all |

Bailey is my shadow and its one of many things that I adore about her. Bailey is a singleton, so there's no competition for my attention. I believe that she follows me because, except for walks and food, its the only excitement in her life. Not to say that I am, or the things that I do are exciting. :) |
