No, but seriously, Yorkie's really are stalkers, aren't they? Maybe we should all write a book, "How I embraced my lack of privacy and learned to love the Yorkie Stalkers" tee hee :-) |
I think my Yorkie puppy is more attached to my Westie (age 3 years) than she is to me. She follows HIM from room to room and she won't go for a walk with me unless HE is there as well. At bedtime, though, she is awful anxious to jump up on my bed and snuggle. If he would though, I'm sure she would prefer to snuggle with him. He snuggles with my son and he doesn't like her on his bed. What's up with that? I know she loves me and I love her but I swear she would rather be with my Westie. Perhaps he is more fun. I'm a lot nicer to her than he is! |
follow the leader My 3 usually follow me around when there is a lot of activity in the house but as they have gotten older they like to lounge on the couch and watch me. BUT, if I sit near them it's fun and games. They 2 girls compete for my lap and Pippo sits on the back of the sofa and makes like a fur collar around my neck after checking out my hair (is it combed to his liking?), my ears (are they clean?), my forehead (any cream he can lick off?). I hope he outgrows this phase, but my lap is taken up. |
AMAZING.! My yorkie Roxy (RIP) was not like that, but Yoda... HOLY MOLY.... I have to tip toe out of the room, he is ALWAYS under me. I have stepped on him so many times because of it and he has not learned not to do it. His poor feet are stepped on at least twice a week. if he can't find me, all I hear are his little feet on the hardwood floors running trying to find me. Oh man it's bad! |
Stop Yorkie from stalking you into certain rooms My suggestion is to train them to not go into certain zones of the house so that you have peace of mind or want some privacy. So if you want the bathroom to be out of bounds, simply teach them not to enter the bathroom, or make it an undesirable destination. What i did to keep the dog out of the bathroom while i showered was to take it in with me and set it on the sink top counter. Since he is scared to jump off, he feels trapped and gets anxious. I take my sweet time and don't pet or console my puppy as i get dressed, brush my teeth etc... Everytime I go to the bathroom and he follows me to the bathroom door, i pick up the puppy so he won't have a chance to get away and place him on the sinktop where he can't get down or move much without falling (they won't jump off the sink top). Once in a while i will let him sit on the ground and close the shower door and go about my business. The dog will feel confined and neglected and will not take being in the bathroom as a fun experience. After one week, when i go to the bathroom, he stops at the doorway and quickly turns tail because he knows he will have to be trapped in there with me for 20 minutes or more with me... lol.. You can modify this to any room. Just put them on a dresser or some place high EVERY time you enter that room... and go about your business while they whine. Do it immediately once you enter the room and the Yorkie crosses the threshold. Grab him and place him up there and go about your business while ignoring them. Once you leave you take them down and place them outside the doorway and close it behind you. Then next time you go into that room, you can give the "no" command and if they persist, then follow up with placing them on a small dresser or surface up high. You must be able to limit this high surface. Perhaps a basket on a dresser or bucket..... pretty soon they won't want to go into that room willingly! Hope this helps |

I would be hesitant to put a Yorkie puppy or dog on a counter up high or dresser, if I was not right there to make sure he/she wasn't going to jump.(I wouldn't go in a shower and leave my dog/puppy on my sink/counter) Some babies could become so stressed that they would jump, and the result would not be good. And some Yorkies, well, a LOT of Yorkies, are really Rotties in a tiny body :D |

With any number of dogs at anyone time plus a kid I just leave the door open or half open and wait for a head to pop in. I well used to one of six bodies with me and so think nothing of it. Only thing that bugs me is trying to get my winter boots on or off with a nose in my eye ball. JL |
Chuchi by nature always used to follow me but I try using the stay command to teach him that the doesn't have to always do it. Sometimes he will stay behind and then end up following me but I keep reinforcing the stay but he is quickly learning. It's adorable seeing him obey and wait behind for me to come back. Part of the trick that I've learned is also not leaving him behind for too long so that he learns that I will always come back |
Pixie follows me everywhere, and I love it. She can be sound asleep and if I get up she is right there. I think it is adorable. It is just bc they love you and want to be near you. |

I honestly think it is just little dogs in general. Toby & Molly are always in every room with me... I love it haha. I love me little boogers even if they are stalkers :P |
Duke follows me everywhere. He could be sound asleep on my bed, but if I leave the room he is up in a flash following me. I would NEVER put him up high and expect him to stay there. He's 7 lbs of terror. I've seen that dog jump from three steps high and fly into our family room.(good thing for carpet) I swear he thinks he's part bird..lol They just love to be near you. Plus if he's not near me he's usually in trouble.:p:rolleyes::D |
Muffin always followed me - even laid on the rug while I bathed. Kacee follows me, too. The only difference is that when I'm bathing she won't come in - she must be afraid she'll get a bath, too. Instead, she'll lay just outside the doorway and wait for awhile and then usually get tired and go to bed. But, yes, Kacee follows me everywhere, too. They love you and just want to be with you. I enjoy being with them, too.:p |
well i'm gonna put my 2 cents in b/c i'm addicted to "The dog whisperer" and i watched a show about how the dog followed her owner and would attack anyone who came near the "momma" its a negative obsession. It's as simple as trainging the sit and stay technique. It was mentioned on here to use that at the doorway. That would be a great place to start... Then move to have her sit and stay, walk a few feet away, then go back and treat, keep going further and further, until eventually you're out of sight. It does take a while and you have to enforce it. but it DOES work. After stepping on my oldest too many times i had to train her to stay out of the kitchen and everywhere else i go, expecially laundry. Took about 2 weeks and now she only follows me if i invite her to. Remember, they're dogs, not humans. They dont own us (even though they really do haha!) Hope this helps! |
I wish I could say I'm special but Jamie and Beau will follow pretty much anyone around my house. I don't mind it usually. When it's a safety hazard (when I'm cooking or carrying something and can't see them, etc.) I send them to their crates and they know to stay there until I tell them it's ok to get out. (I don't even have to shut the door anymore! BTW this is way more impressive to guests than sit or roll over!) Mostly I just hate it for them. Especially when they're asleep! Sometimes if they're sleeping and I'm thirsty, I think to myself "Am I thirsty enough to wake the boys up?" Because as soon as I move they are up and hot on my trail. |
my baby Emma does that too, but i kinda like that :D |

I have a train of 3 that follow me everywhere! They keep me company when my fiance isn't home. |
I think its more of a habit, and if it bothers you it is controlable. Chuchi used to follow me too much. I don't mind if he follows me once in a while but when he does it to much I just tell him "stay there" and he does. It is very important to tell him "very good" when I come back and he hasn't followed me. If you don't say anything they will always follow out of habit. |
I am glad to see this thread, I have been conflicted about the dependency/following thing. I would like to know the mechanics behind this characteristic. On the one hand, follow the leader=good for safety and normal for puppies. On the other, get a life would be nice too. I'm trying to find the line, incessant following might work for some dog owners, but it is not that useful in my house, and it doesn't seem to apply if there's a dog across the street. Recently I started doorway STAY training when I saw it mentioned by Cap'n noonie?...Wow. All of a sudden at least the dog is pausing to get permission at EVERY doorway. I'm sure a long owner-out-of-sight STAY will be challenging and win him a lot of cookies when we get to it, for now he still sneaks on his tummy to peek where I went... I saw the accidentally-stepped-on coming a mile away, and everyone was able to give the pup a good little soft kick rather than step upon it. He probably got knocked 3 or 4 times and now keeps a good safe foot distance himself. |
My yorkie would follow me everywhere...even the bathroom. If I sat on the couch in the den, he would be right there wagging his tail and waiting to see if it was movie time...and when it was he would curl up right on the blanket covering me. I truly miss that now that he has gone on....movie night has never been the same since. :animal-pa |
Little One is like my shadow Little One is 8 months old and from the moment I wake up to the minute I go to sleep he's basically my shadow. He loves to follow me from room to room and now that he is used to my working schedule he's gotten better about being left alone. The first 2 months were hard for me because I felt he was so terrified to be alone. Now, I actually enjoy having him around all the time when i'm home, he's like my little helper, he will watch me do all my chores and then we play on my days off. I think its kinda sweet that he wants to be around me that much :). |
What I was told when I got Chuchi was to teach him that you would always come back. At first I would tell him to stay and go to another room at first 1 min, 5 min, 10 min, etc... Now he follows once in a while but most of the time rather lie on his bed and if I tell him to stay he listens. Prizing help. Hope this is useful to all |
funny Reading this thread cracked me up my little penny is only 9 weeks old and shes my tail shes so tiny i had to purchse her a kitten collar and i left the bell on so i always know when shes nere |

Bailey is my shadow and its one of many things that I adore about her. Bailey is a singleton, so there's no competition for my attention. I believe that she follows me because, except for walks and food, its the only excitement in her life. Not to say that I am, or the things that I do are exciting. :) |
