Love the post. Our rescue had 4 yorkies from a mill last week. This week we have 2 more yorkies, 3 shih tzu's and 3 maltese. We work to get them healthy and to socialize and get the basic training. The problem is people who want to adopt is they have very unrealistic expectations. We want to adopt but to forever homes who have the patience, love and understanding of what it takes to rehab a mill dog. We don't want to scare them off but if they can be scared they aren't the right homes. We'll just keep them until the right home is found. Any problem with copying and sending the info with the dogs to their new homes or for just general info for potential adopters?

What an eye-opener this has been. I had no NO NO idea what a puppy mill really was. As a lover of dogs, this is terrible. What intervention is possible? I don't think most people know how terrible the situation is for these dogs, I sure didn't, and I am in the pet industry. I will spead the word at Pet Global this year!

How long did it take for you to see your yorkie feel more comfortable ?

Mabadie, I have a Yorkie rescue I got 11 hears ago when she was a two year old. She was so very frightened. It took a couple of years of patient and loving care before she was comfortable with both my husband and I. We were living full time in our RV so we were in very close quarters. It took her a couple more years to get comfortable with friends and close family.

She had never had a toy or been on grass. She is still shy at times, but now is a very happy, laid back little Yorkie. She plays with my other Yorkie and my sister's Chihuahua. She greets visitors at the door.

They are worth rehabilitating.

what a lovely post, we have a rescue dog and have had her one month and are beginning to despair whether she will ever settle in, she hates being alone and after 1 month we have only built up to her being happily left alone for 2minutes!!!!!!
heres some more info if anyone has any suggestions??

we have had our yorkie for almost 1 month now , she is 7 mths old and suffers from separation anxiety. We had finally got her settled to sleep in her crate at night if this is beside our bed and we will slowly progress to move this out of the bedroom over time. Initially she was barking everytime we went out of the room even for a few mins, we only come back in if she is quiet and then give her a treat. She has access to the kitchen where her toys , crate and food is however if we leave her she cries non stop, she has stopped barking but cries, shakes and urinates on the floor if left alone even for a few minutes. She was a rescue dog and we know that she didnt have a good life before she came to use and we want to help her become less stressed and used to being alone. She will be a delight when someone is with her but as soon as she is left alone she gets very distressed. we have tried a phermone spray, diffussers, leaving some of my clothes with scent on and a herbal tablet however nothing seems to be helping. we tried to build up the time she will be alone by leaving for 10secs, 30sec, 1 min etc but crying starts almost straight away. I walk her and play with her every timebefore leaving her but while we are away from her she doesnt eat, drink , playwith her toys etc until we return ( we have left a camera on so we know that she paces and cries). we are considering hiring a behaviour specialist and out vet also suggested he could prescribe an anti anxiety medication for her if no improvement. has anyone got any other suggestions of what we could try? i leave the tv, music on etc also anytime she is alone. On our return home she goes crazy, and jumps, pants, tries to bites us ( gently!) and take about 20mins to calm down despite if i ignore her or not. I need to be able to leave her for 4hrs while i go to work. can anyone help????

My husband and I are going to see a 5 year old puppy mill female Yorkie with hopes of adopting her tomorrow. We have a 5 year old male Yorkie which we adopted from the SPCA after he had been abandoned. These posts were all so very interesting to read. My husband and I are both retired and think we have the patience to rehab a puppy mill rescue. (I sure hope so anyway) I truly believe it would be a very rewarding experience. Attachment 408098 We adopted sweet little Nellie. We are now going on week two of her gentle rehab. She has learned how to go up and down the stairs. She's walking well on a leash, and seems to really enjoy going for walks a few times a day. Every day we see subtle changes in her behavior. She's more accepting of us trying to cuddle with her. Although she's still very shy at times, we love her. Onward!!! :aimeeyork
