Bell Training to go Potty I want to try bell training for Harley to go potty. He now whines when he wants to go out but sometimes he whines just to be whining or for attention so I need some other way of knowing when he needs to go out. My question is where can you find the bells that attach to the wall? |
You can use any type of bell. You can get them any size at any department store. I got mine at Wal-Mart in the craft section. I took a cord, attached the bell and put it by a hook by the side of the door. I didn't want it actually hanging on the door, sometimes it stays open during the hot weather. I also got the bell door hanger thing that they have out at Christmas time..it has 3 large bells on it. You can use almost anything you can imagine to hang bells on..... I started ringing it every time we went outside...and use my "word". Then after a few times...showed them how to ring it with the paw...Chloe' acutally uses her nose. I love it!! Chloe' uses it everytime....Myah doesn't. She just waits till Chloe' goes out and goes with her. I don't think she likes the bells..... |
OMG...I want to do this techinque so bad too!!! I'm glad that it really works for yorkies too. You both just motivated me...I'm going to buy a bell today! Thanks guys |
WOW, I had no clue you could actually do this. It's awesome. I'm going to try it with Skooter also. Thanks! |
We hang a bell from the top of our door down to about 1 foot off the ground. Just a tiny one. And its so cute, Bella will ring the bell, and come in and stare at you. If you don't get up, its back to the bell, and then back into the room to stare you down. We have found tho, that she will ring the bell just to go outside for a walk too..haha But shes actually pretty smart. We will say "ring the bell" before we go out every time and once she rings it, we open the door. Now if she could learn to play fetch lol Instead of taking the ball and laying down. |
I think the bell thing is a great idea. I'm hoping it will work for Harley. What do you if you take them to someone else's house? Harley has stayed with my mom before when I go out of town. Do you take the bell with you? |

It works for us...... |
we got one of those customer service bells at office depot, the kind they have on desks when the clerk is away, just hit her paw on it everything you take her outside, we haven't gotten our pup yet, but i'm praying this works fast for her |
My Chloe also rings a bell to go outside. I strung three miniature cow bells on a ribbon and hung them on the door knob. The first three or fourth times I rang the bells and said, "Let's go outside!" in a excited voice as we headed out. After that I would point to the bells while saying it and would tell her to ring the bells. She caught on quickly and now drives me nuts with the bells because she LOVES going outside. Just a word of caution though... One site that I read while researching this method noted that jingle bells of any size should NOT be used because the puppy could get its toenail caught in the bell and possibly pull it out. With this setup, you can easily take the bells with you when you travel or just make a second set to keep in a travel bag so you don't forget it. Good luck! This is a really neat way for your baby to let you know when he/she wants to go out. |
Hi, new to YT, Hi to all, 2 wks ago I got a 5 yrs old yorkie, Jasper is great. He goes potty outside 95% but a few mishaps in the house, a some on the pee pad some not. Do you think I can retrain him to use the bell? I am the 3 owner, his second owner only had him 2 weeks and needed to give him up because he was just diagnoised with cancer and would not be able to give Jasper the time and love. Jasper and I am my husband are still getting to know us and we him, he is very attached in such a short time. I just want him to be a good boy and be able to take him into other homes and not worry about a mishap. Thank you in advance Pamela722 |
Bell training I use a tap bell (like a bell hop bell) that I got at Staples. I just sit it on the floor by the door. You can take this anywhere and sit it anywhere that is convenient. I think any age dog can be trained this way. It might take longer with an older dog, but they can be taught. |
WOW This is awesome. I did not know about this bell training technique. Thanks for sharing. I am going to buy the bell as soon as possible. |
I've used the jingle bells for 5 years now, and never had a problem with them getting their nails stuck. I never even thought of that problem. Chloe' uses her nose/head to ring the bell. I guess it depends on how they ring the bell. The cow type bells would be great...but we don't have them around here. I think any bell would work as long as you teach them how to ring it......... |
I bought the miniature cow bells at an arts & crafts store (i.e. Michaels, Crafts Etc., Hobby Lobby, etc.). You can order them online at craftsetc.com. Just do a search for "bell." I thought about using the bellhop bell, but I already had the bells and ribbon, so I just made that. At the time I was searching, I saw some websites that sold the premade bell hangers. Also, some suggestions I found were to use jingle bells, but put them up high on the ribbon where the puppy could not reach them and put something else at the bottom that the puppy could paw or nudge. Yorkies are super smart and I think even older dogs can learn to ring the bell. Good luck! |
Bells I will start searching for bells ASAP, and get the ball rolling Thanks for the info |

wow!thats a great idea however.... my 6 month old puppy has been trained to go in one designated area in the house.and when i take her out for walks she does her business outside too!however,is it possible that she can be retrained to ring the bell to go outside forever and not in the house?...i would love for her to be able to ring the bell whenever she has to go.i know that it is my fault that she is going in 1 area but i would like for her to just go outside now.how can i go about this? |

Yes it is totally possible and highly likely. :) Just start by ringing the bell each time you take her out. Then use a key word, I use "potty". After you do this for a couple weeks, take her paw and touch the bell, treat her, then take her out, and treat again after she goes. Do this every time you take her out. It is a process, but if you are very consistent, and patient and encouraging, she will get it  My Yorkie was trained to pads first, then I also trained her to outside and to use a bell to go outside. She took it upon herself to ring the bell to let my other older dogs outside and to let me know when they are at the door wanting to come back inside. It is really amazing. Yorkies are highly intelligent.:thumbup: |
Bailey is a bell ringer!! Love it!! We use the service bell on the floor. If she's in a room without a bell, then she'll paw at the springy door stop! What a smart dog!! :) |
About how long does it take on the bell training? I finally got a bell and introduced Harley to it Friday evening. I rang it everytime he went out throughout the weekend. He acts like he doesn't want to have anything to do with it and acts scared of it. I'm going to keep working on it and hopefully he will come around. |
Well my son called this morning and said that Harley rang the bell twice....I'm hoping this was no accident. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |
When our puppy comes home toward the end of September, we will be bell training as well. I have heard a lot of good remarks about bell training instead of barking. I have my fingers crossed for you. It sounds like your little one is getting the idea! |
Izzy has been potty bell trained since I brought her home at 5 months and now with my new Biewer of two weeks (also 5 months old), I started him right away to get used to the bells. It did not take him long to catch on. At first he was afraid of the bells but not anymore. Now he rings the bell with his nose all the time to go out but not always to potty..sometimes to goof off but I nip that in the bud....if no pottying after a few minutes..in he comes. I always used the catch phrase, "Outside potty ring the bell." I then take their paws and tap the bell while saying it. They are pretty smart cookies that's for sure. Thanks for the warning on the potty bells (they are all made with the jingle bells). I had no idea about the nail catching. I might have to get the cow bells and make my own! |
I use the bell with Sasha and absolutely love it. She caught on so quickly that it amazed me. Sometimes especially in the summer, she rings the bell just because she wants to go outside, but lately she has learned that when she doesn't go, she doesn't get a little treat. When I first started training her to use the bell, each time we would go outside, I would take her paw, ring the bell and say "go potty." Then we'd go outside and if she went, she got tons of praise and a treat. I kid you not, by the 2nd day, me and my mom were in the bedroom and we heard the bell ring. I went out and saw her standing there by the door waiting to go out. When I took her out and she went, I went nuts! I couldn't believe she caught on so quickly! We did continue to have a few accidents here and there as she was quite young when I started this technique, but it has been the best thing for me! I'm able to now tell when she needs to go and can hear the bell on the other side of the house. |
Potty Training Blues Love the bell idea! Jasper trots round and round the house and that's how I think he's telling me when he has to go. I'll try the bell maybe it could help. |
The bells are a great idea, I just think it's funny some of you have never heard of it? I guess you've never had Pavlov and the salivating dog/Bell story and the Classical Conditioning Theory shoved down your throat over and over and over.... LOL It's classic psych. |
Going on 3 weeks !!!! We have been bell training for 3 weeks , and they only use it once Lol !!! But I won't give up , if it kills me Lol !! I need for them to use it, they all go out to potty, but it's better if I know when, so I don't have to go out 10 x a day, and second guess them. But one thing I can said every time I ring the bell they all ran to the door, sometime they use it for play time and some for potty time LOl !!! bark@ulater !!!!!! manina, miley:aimeeyorkmax:aimeeyorksasha:aimeeyork |
I love the bell idea! I'm going get one tomorrow! My question is, do you use the bell in the middle of the night? Lily will go out around 3:00 a.m. and I really don't want to wake everyone in the house to ring the bell. |
