wow!thats a great idea however.... my 6 month old puppy has been trained to go in one designated area in the house.and when i take her out for walks she does her business outside too!however,is it possible that she can be retrained to ring the bell to go outside forever and not in the house?...i would love for her to be able to ring the bell whenever she has to go.i know that it is my fault that she is going in 1 area but i would like for her to just go outside now.how can i go about this? |

Yes it is totally possible and highly likely. :) Just start by ringing the bell each time you take her out. Then use a key word, I use "potty". After you do this for a couple weeks, take her paw and touch the bell, treat her, then take her out, and treat again after she goes. Do this every time you take her out. It is a process, but if you are very consistent, and patient and encouraging, she will get it  My Yorkie was trained to pads first, then I also trained her to outside and to use a bell to go outside. She took it upon herself to ring the bell to let my other older dogs outside and to let me know when they are at the door wanting to come back inside. It is really amazing. Yorkies are highly intelligent.:thumbup: |
Bailey is a bell ringer!! Love it!! We use the service bell on the floor. If she's in a room without a bell, then she'll paw at the springy door stop! What a smart dog!! :) |
About how long does it take on the bell training? I finally got a bell and introduced Harley to it Friday evening. I rang it everytime he went out throughout the weekend. He acts like he doesn't want to have anything to do with it and acts scared of it. I'm going to keep working on it and hopefully he will come around. |
Well my son called this morning and said that Harley rang the bell twice....I'm hoping this was no accident. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. |
When our puppy comes home toward the end of September, we will be bell training as well. I have heard a lot of good remarks about bell training instead of barking. I have my fingers crossed for you. It sounds like your little one is getting the idea! |
Izzy has been potty bell trained since I brought her home at 5 months and now with my new Biewer of two weeks (also 5 months old), I started him right away to get used to the bells. It did not take him long to catch on. At first he was afraid of the bells but not anymore. Now he rings the bell with his nose all the time to go out but not always to potty..sometimes to goof off but I nip that in the bud....if no pottying after a few minutes..in he comes. I always used the catch phrase, "Outside potty ring the bell." I then take their paws and tap the bell while saying it. They are pretty smart cookies that's for sure. Thanks for the warning on the potty bells (they are all made with the jingle bells). I had no idea about the nail catching. I might have to get the cow bells and make my own! |
I use the bell with Sasha and absolutely love it. She caught on so quickly that it amazed me. Sometimes especially in the summer, she rings the bell just because she wants to go outside, but lately she has learned that when she doesn't go, she doesn't get a little treat. When I first started training her to use the bell, each time we would go outside, I would take her paw, ring the bell and say "go potty." Then we'd go outside and if she went, she got tons of praise and a treat. I kid you not, by the 2nd day, me and my mom were in the bedroom and we heard the bell ring. I went out and saw her standing there by the door waiting to go out. When I took her out and she went, I went nuts! I couldn't believe she caught on so quickly! We did continue to have a few accidents here and there as she was quite young when I started this technique, but it has been the best thing for me! I'm able to now tell when she needs to go and can hear the bell on the other side of the house. |
Potty Training Blues Love the bell idea! Jasper trots round and round the house and that's how I think he's telling me when he has to go. I'll try the bell maybe it could help. |
The bells are a great idea, I just think it's funny some of you have never heard of it? I guess you've never had Pavlov and the salivating dog/Bell story and the Classical Conditioning Theory shoved down your throat over and over and over.... LOL It's classic psych. |
Going on 3 weeks !!!! We have been bell training for 3 weeks , and they only use it once Lol !!! But I won't give up , if it kills me Lol !! I need for them to use it, they all go out to potty, but it's better if I know when, so I don't have to go out 10 x a day, and second guess them. But one thing I can said every time I ring the bell they all ran to the door, sometime they use it for play time and some for potty time LOl !!! bark@ulater !!!!!! manina, miley:aimeeyorkmax:aimeeyorksasha:aimeeyork |
I love the bell idea! I'm going get one tomorrow! My question is, do you use the bell in the middle of the night? Lily will go out around 3:00 a.m. and I really don't want to wake everyone in the house to ring the bell. |
