i don't know how to get him to stop eating things on the ground
 
when i take my puppies out for walks, they're constantly eating things on the ground. it worries me because i live in the city and there are things such as broken glass, screws, bird droppings, cigarrette butts...you name it.

i've tried the "leave it" command, which works, but i have to keep doing it every second. i look and sound silly when i'm walking my boys because i'm always saying "leave it."

do they ever outgrow this phase? i look at the other dog owners in my neighborhood and none seem to have this problem.

please help!

Make sure you have them in harnesses
and everytime they go somewhere you don't want

a slight tug on the leash
and say UH!

You need to be very watchful
and you'll see they will get the idea
also you will need to work with the drop it technique for when they pick up something you don't want them to have

There is not a bird dropping or a dead and dried up worm within a 2 mile radius of my home that my Sophie has not already eaten. I keep waiting for her to get sick. But somehow she doesn't. I use a harness and we walk for 45 min. every morning. I give a gentle tug and a pull and sometimes get her away in time, but then there are those times that she snags it before I even realize she's seen something. If you figure out a solution, let me know. Sorry I don't have one for you. I just thought I'd let you know I'm with ya. :D

I have a "hoover" too! She tries to eat everything. Ginger is not good with "leave it" either. If she is not on her leash, she runs with it. We are still working on that training. :rolleyes:

Lol Charlie eats everything on the ground to... I've come to realize its inevitable.

I'm trying to get Bailey to stop doing that too, I constantly worry he is going to swallow something that will make him sick.

I have the same problem with Madigan. Since his $800. two day hospital visit to remove three plant pods that were stuck, I am now more of a fanatic and still can't keep him from getting "stuff"! We have a lovely yard for them to play in but I can't just let him roam anymore. He has to be escorted. I was hoping he would outgrow it. But he is already a year and I see no change.

This looks like as good of a place as any to just say this. I think that it is absolutely discusting, totally irresponsible and nasty for smokers to throw cigarrette butts on the ground. I know YT'ers don't do this, wouldn't dream of doing it. To me it's worse than dog poo. (I guess I could be a little prejudiced on that issue...but) It just repulses me to see a nasty cigarrette butt. I'm so worried my babies are going to try to pick one up. I've very leary of walking them in places where there is trash on the ground. UUUGGGGGHHHHH. Thanks for letting me vent.

Hi..well I should have named my Dustie....Dusty Bin..He is the same...Flies are his favourite food I reckon...yukkk...not many get away around our House dead or alive...He just puts anything in his mouth if it will fit in...I keep telling him "No" and taking things off him...but he often beats me to it...Not been sick yet though...He also pulls on his lead too..although if he decides n ot to walk..as they often do..then he sits down and nothing on this earth will move him...Oh they do drive us to drink don't they folks..:) But we love em..:rolleyes:

im glad im not the only one having this problem. it is just so frightening thinking what might happen if they eat something awful from the ground. thanks folks for sharing your experience with me.

Unfortunately it doesn't appear that we've been much help. But at least you know you're not alone. :D

Oh my gosh I have this problem as well. Pebbles eats everything off the ground I am forever telling her to "leave it", but I think, she thinks I say "eat it" lol. Right now I have a rabbit living some where in our yard so Pebbles thinks the rabbit poop is food Yuck!!
Sorry no advise for you just share your frustration.
