i don't know how to get him to stop eating things on the ground when i take my puppies out for walks, they're constantly eating things on the ground. it worries me because i live in the city and there are things such as broken glass, screws, bird droppings, cigarrette butts...you name it. i've tried the "leave it" command, which works, but i have to keep doing it every second. i look and sound silly when i'm walking my boys because i'm always saying "leave it." do they ever outgrow this phase? i look at the other dog owners in my neighborhood and none seem to have this problem. please help! |
Make sure you have them in harnesses and everytime they go somewhere you don't want a slight tug on the leash and say UH! You need to be very watchful and you'll see they will get the idea also you will need to work with the drop it technique for when they pick up something you don't want them to have |
There is not a bird dropping or a dead and dried up worm within a 2 mile radius of my home that my Sophie has not already eaten. I keep waiting for her to get sick. But somehow she doesn't. I use a harness and we walk for 45 min. every morning. I give a gentle tug and a pull and sometimes get her away in time, but then there are those times that she snags it before I even realize she's seen something. If you figure out a solution, let me know. Sorry I don't have one for you. I just thought I'd let you know I'm with ya. :D |
I have a "hoover" too! She tries to eat everything. Ginger is not good with "leave it" either. If she is not on her leash, she runs with it. We are still working on that training. |
Lol Charlie eats everything on the ground to... I've come to realize its inevitable. |
I'm trying to get Bailey to stop doing that too, I constantly worry he is going to swallow something that will make him sick. |
I have the same problem with Madigan. Since his $800. two day hospital visit to remove three plant pods that were stuck, I am now more of a fanatic and still can't keep him from getting "stuff"! We have a lovely yard for them to play in but I can't just let him roam anymore. He has to be escorted. I was hoping he would outgrow it. But he is already a year and I see no change. |
This looks like as good of a place as any to just say this. I think that it is absolutely discusting, totally irresponsible and nasty for smokers to throw cigarrette butts on the ground. I know YT'ers don't do this, wouldn't dream of doing it. To me it's worse than dog poo. (I guess I could be a little prejudiced on that issue...but) It just repulses me to see a nasty cigarrette butt. I'm so worried my babies are going to try to pick one up. I've very leary of walking them in places where there is trash on the ground. UUUGGGGGHHHHH. Thanks for letting me vent. |

Right now I have a rabbit living some where in our yard so Pebbles thinks the rabbit poop is food Yuck!! Sorry no advise for you just share your frustration. |

All 3 of mine look like little goats in the backyard. What the heck are they eating now??? They are always chewing. I'm constantly digging stuff out of their mouths. |

When Nikko was a young puppy, he would eat EVERYTHING. Our backyard is gravel instead of grass, and he decided that even the little rocks looked edible. It was so difficult. But he gradually started to outgrow that level of eating obsessiveness, and now he's more of just a regular vacuum cleaner. If anything new and interesting hits the floor, it must go in his mouth (chapstick, tissue, folded pocketknife, a nickel, nail clippers, etc). And if anything is crawling or flying, that also must go in his mouth (giant beetles, flies, spiders - this really makes me worry, but somehow he doesn't seem to have been affected by any poision or bites yet, knock on wood). So it might get better for you with time. Maybe a little better, maybe a lot better. Or maybe not at all. |
Hey lemonlauren, did you ever get him to stop eating leather scraps? :) |
my four and a half pup has the same problem. I will tell him to "drop it" when i see he is chewing on something and once i say "drop it" he will swalow it. He does it so he won't have to drop it!!! what a brat huh?! |

I honestly believe Laci prefers ants over food, she actually cries at the door to get out and eat the bugs.. it really drives me nuts.. she love them , flies beetles , anything that moves is hers for snack!! I only wish she liked her food as much as she liked the bugs.. urrgghhhhh |
My 10 mo old Yorkie/Silky does this same thing! His obsession is mulch. Everytime we come back inside I have to pull it out of his mouth!! There are times when I have to just put him back in the house b/c he won't stop! Let me know if you find a way to deal. My older Yorkie never did this!! |

We're usually really careful, but last weekend he got ahold of a leather keychain we'd braided... He had actually eaten about half of it by the time I caught him. Thankfully, that's the only damage he's ever had the opportunity to do to anything we've made. Lauren & Nikko PS: Weirdo little bug-muncher that he is though, he did throw up a little puddle of neon green with bug legs floating in it a few days ago. Uggh, I really worry with all the wind scorpions we get here, on top of some of the more rare but even more dangerous spiders like black widows and brown recluse spiders. :-( |
