Ok i will prefer my puppy to be outdoor potty trained but I was reading... that since I want him to be outdoor the I should not use the wee wee pads indoor because he will think its ok to use the bathroom indoors. I take him outside to use the bathroom and praise him when he does but since I never know when he has to go I use the wee wee pads inside so when he does it will be easy to clean up. Also, what about when the weather is bad outside. Is it just best from him to be both outside and inside trained. What do you think about this? |
That 's exactly what I do. I live in NH and we get some very cold winters. Calleigh refuses to go out in the snow or rain..She is trained for both and it works out just great. Now that the weather is better she goes outside more. If she goes on the pad in the house, that's fine too. She's two yrs. and that 's the way it has been. I don't mind it at all. I bought her all kinds of winter coats and she hasn't used one. :) Good luck! |
I am not really sure.. but I hope this helps.. I take both of mine in the morning as soon as i wake up.. and afternoons .. and nights.. when i am unavailable and they are with there sitter lol my sister she put wee wee pads.. and my lil girl actually goes inside as well and my boy he waits until he is taken out side.. so i would actually say.. either way is good.. like u mention when u have bad weather its hard to take them out side.. and thats a small problem i have with my boy if its raining out side.. he still wont go inside.. so i have to take him out side rain/or shine.. he wont go inside.. no matter what... so i would say a puppy that nows inside and outside its grrrrreat lol... |
Mine has both- she uses the pee pads as a backup if I'm not able to take her out. But she DOES think most small white rugs are pee pads now! |
I like outdoor. |
Mine is strictly trained to go outside. i don't like the idea of it being ok to pee and poop in the house. No matter what the weather was like, i put her leash and harness on and took my puppy outside to potty. Then i stayed out there until she went. Sometimes she went right away and sometimes it took 30 minutes. But i did not let her have free reign for play time until i knew she had pottied outside. housebreaking is hard, especially for yorkies so pick a training method and stick with it. consistency is key. |
Laya is trained outside and pee pad. Works out great for us. The pee pad is nice if I am out and can't get back quick enough. Her bladder is like a peanut and she can't hold it for long periods of time. So for us better the pee pad than the carpet:) |
Nolee is outdoor trained! When the weather is bad he will hold it until he can't and then he will go. We have a place with the patio roof extended over a small area in the yard, but it is coverd with limestone and he won't go there. Only in the grass! I guess it is a personal perference, which you would like to train you puppy to do. |
I trained Cooper from the 1st day to go outside. I got Carley when she was 6 months old and she was supposed to be pee pad trained. I say supposed to be, because while she did go on the pee pads, she also went on small area rugs I had in the house...it was like she couldn't tell the difference. I decided I wanted them both to do the same, so I just started from scratch with her, like when I first got Cooper. On the rare occasion she has an accident, (maybe once every 6 months) she will still find an area rug, usually the bath mat in the bathroom, LOL. Cooper does not have accidents, ever. I agree with the sticking to one method. |
We have a pee pad outside for Genghis as he likes to pee on a pad, it's a little silly, but he poo's on a little patch of grass outside. |
Bailey goes 100% outside - in all types of weather. (she has a rain coat and a winter coat) It works for us. Our back door is right off the living room. If I had an apartment or if getting to the outside wasn't convenient, then pee-pads are the answer. As far at Bailey letting me know when she has to go outside - we taught her to ring a service bell. It works great and gets lots of laughs. Good luck!! :) |
We go out in all weather. They just go very quickly when it's rainy or snowy :) Sometimes it takes a little extra encouragement or I have to go stand on the porch with them, but usually just when winter first hits in Nov/Dec, once they get used to it after a snowfall or two they are fine! If you use the pads you can't just put them out and expect the pup to use them, you have to actually train them to use them. Why don't you teach your puppy how to ring a bell so he can let you know when he needs to go out? |

You hang a bell on a ribbon or use a register bell (the dog-themed products on the market are called the Tell Bell and Poochie-Bells, but use your imagination if you are a DIY-type person...) Anyway, when you take the dog outside, take their paw and ring the bell. Act all happy, like they did it, and go outside! Repeat 10 or 20 or 100 times until the dog does it on their own. When they do, praise them and IMMEDIATELY go outside. Bell=outside, even if they are just messing around. Eventually it clicks. Loki took about 3 days to get it. Sammy took around 6 weeks, even with Loki using the bell. Then one day she got and has used it since. It teaches them to ask to go out! They generally understand they need to pee outside (assuming you are taking treats out with you, watching them and praising/treating them as soon as they go) but they don't know how to *get* outside unless you take them. Start when they are puppies and they have no idea when they need to go out (their bodies don't start giving them any warning until they are like 4 months old, and still very little until 6-8 months depending on the dog) You still need to go out on a schedule, but practice the bell! Once they start to get a little warning they will know just how to ask! You can also ask them to ring the bell before you go out. Mine give me a look, like "duh you are already here!" but they do it. My issue was that Loki was trained but he didnt know how to ask to go out. I would be upstairs and think he was napping somewhere in the house and come downstairs to a puddle in front of the door. Unless I was sitting right there and saw him standing there, i had no idea. So, once we got the bell he rang it and I came running! I felt like a butler, but overnight we had no more accidents :D (Again, he was already like a year old and trained, but it made all the difference!) |
