LOL We use HURRY UP too. We've only had like -30 here, they don't mind the cold or the snow as much as the wind. They stay close to the house when it's windy :) The funniest thing is that when we have a fresh blanket of snow they just pee anywhere, even on the sidewalk, because to them it all smells the same! :rolleyes:

:animal-paHummmmm.....We've had a really big problem with our Neko! When we adopted him, he was already 5 years old and it seemed that he was potty trained "outside"! His paper work said that he was potted trained but he had accidents atleast 2-3 times a week inside. Well, we've had him almost 2 months and it is getting pretty overwhelming for us (carpet cleaning). :mad: If you take him outside, he will go outside (almost like he knows that this is the place to do it), but if you don't take him out, he will go anywhere in the house, (usually right where he sits)! So, we were told that apparently, we don't get his signal of when he wants to go out. Neko will go to anyone in the house and jump up and down on you, once he sees he has your attention, he will run for the back door (jumping up and down on it), once the door is opened, off into the grass he goes and does his business! Back in the house he comes. Less than an hour later, you will find him somewhere balled and scared (until you step in it, you don't know why). He hasn't pooped in the house since we got him, but the pee happens all to often. Because we have seen him jump on us and lead him to outside, I feel he is potty trained, but I just can't figure out why he still goes in the house, too! We were told that he is giving us a signal and we just don't get it each time. ( I disagree...I've seen him get up and stand in the floor and go then lay down and coward. Never once heading for the back door or anyone else. One time Neko slept in his beg in my bedroom, I saw him get out of the bed and lean fwd, as he does when he goes, and pee in the floor and then back into his bed, putting his head down in the bed and covering his eyes.) Anyway, I was told also to get a "BELL" and have it at the back door just incase we miss the (jump on the door signal we would hear it!). I went to "Petco" and asked, well, they laughed at me and said not only do they not sell bells, but "Good Luck" with teaching that!:mad: It's a "MUST" that I get Neko to figure out that he can not just "go pee" where he stands and that he is to always go outside...:(:animal-pa

It sounds like you need to crate train him and also get those carpets *really* clean so he doesn't smell it and go again. Also, have you mentioned it to a vet? It sound more like incontinence than deliberate, especially if he's going every hour. Loki has a type of diabetes and he is on special medicine so that he doesn't have to pee ever 30 minutes (just every 45, LOL :rolleyes:) Anyway, he used to do this before his medicine - he would just wake up, stand up, and pee. Sammy doesn't have any medical problems and while she was a handful to housetrain, she never did the "stand up in front of us and pee" thing it was always sneaking off somewhere. I would get him checked, crate train him and also ignore those Petco people. Bells work :) Dogs will do anything for a treat. I have two with completely different personalities (Loki=smart, does tricks, anything for a treat, mommy's boy, nervous and scared of his own shadow - Sammy=independent, has better things to do than tricks, very bold, very happy!) and they both learned to ring the bell!

They are so funny! Lexi is enjoying her first spring with green grass. As the snow melted away her where to go potty spots got smaller and smaller! She would look at me like "where am I suppose to go now?" So the "Hurry ups" take a lot longer now as she explores for the perfect spot!

:animal-paCrate train....As in keep him in the crate 24/7 and during this course of time, keep up with certain times to feed and take outside? Praising him when he goes outside? I'm new at this, but I have been doing this since I got him. I know that all dogs aren't the same, but exactly how much time does this take to accomplish? I really do think that he knows to go outside! I can tell by the way he has his days, (and plenty of them) when he jumps on us and the back door, run outside and instantly goes potty). Also, how he goes in the carpet boldly in front of us and then balls up and cowards no sooner than he does it. He's been in a crate now for almost 2 months, only getting out to eat and potty periodically. I really do think that he gets the idea. Not to mention, his previous owner did say he was potty trainned to go outside, but with 2-3 times a week accidents. He "KNOW TO GO OUTSIDE", I just feel that. Yet, can't explain why he will boldly 2-3 times a week just stand and do it in our faces and then coward. Maybe you are right about seeking out the vet....hummmm! Well, 2 months ago when we got him, all of his paper work about his health checked out to be normal! Yet, he's been doing this from day one! Thank You for your advice, I'm trying to get all the help I can. Oh, and yes, we do clean the carpets "WELLL". This is the frustration, all the work to clean up and then he does it AGAIN. I have heard that if they still smell it, they will think it's okay to go there and do it again..I'm learning!:(:animal-pa

We never kept them in a crate 24/7, just when we couldn't watch them or when we weren't home or when they were most likely to have an accident (like if they hadn't gone potty when we went outside, they went in the crate for a while and we tried again)

You should also make sure that he's actually empty when he comes back in. Sometimes they can pee 2-3 times before they are really empty :) And definitely check on the medical stuff because that is exactly what Loki did and he does have medical issues and he's on meds that make him mostly normal :)

Aww! Yeah Sammy likes a particular spot to poop and if we clear the snow away from a different spot in the yard she would trudge out in 2 feet of snow to "her" spot :) She was like Calvin from Calvin and Hobbes trudging aroung in waist deep snow :)

What a great idea, while my other dog barks, Shayna has not figured that out yet. She's 5 months and thought my DH thinks I'm nuts, I'm going to try the bell idea. Thanks

This has been the most effective tool I learned on YT and perhaps it was from you.. but once I commited to taking Laci out to pee every time she did I would say HURRY UP>. she peed, GOOO GOOD girl.. now she pretty much will go on command if I say hurry up.. its much better then go pee or poop !

Tia goes outside but I must admit indoors would be handy sometimes. When we stayed in the hotel with her it was real late and I didn't really fancy going 3 flights down stairs and then along the road to hunt for a bit of grass for her to do her buissness so I put out a pee pad and she just curled up to sleep on it lol.
So yes I made the journey.

I would love to try to bells, Maddie doesn't "tell" me she needs to go out, we just take her. But, what happens when she is ringing the bell to go to the backyard and you are in the bedroom or doing something and don't/can't hear the bells? Do you put them more than one place or just the door to go outside?

Sophie is outdoor trained. And she goes out in most weather with no troubles. However, it's the 2-3 times a week that she needs to go out at 2:00 AM when I wish I had done the "pee pad" thing! :rolleyes:

Having a command works great, then they know what they are out there to do. Sit means sit, down means down, and Hurry up means potty!:D
We used the word "Out" with our lab, because we wanted him to go out in the woods behind our house. (nothing to clean up!)
