Still pooping in her crate My baby, Deb is 12 weeks old tomorrow. She sleeps in her crate and still poops in it every night. She has her last meal around 6 pm and goes potty before bedtime which is about 11 pm and then she goes out about 5 am. She never wakes during the night and the vet said not to wake her if she was not waking herself. In the beginning I was waking her to take her to the pee pad, but she never went...she just thought it was play time. During the day when we are gone, she is in a penned area in the kitchen with a pee pad. She uses the pee pad every single time and when we are home with her she either uses the pee pad or goes outside. My question is this...should I let her sleep in her penned area? It is much bigger than her crate, but she has a bed in there that she loves and her pee pad? I am anxious to hear anyones suggestions!!! :animal36 |
don't know how I could help. Rebel poopied once in there and never did it again. Hopefully, someone else could give you advice on this. |

Taking her out in the middle of the night might be the alternative to pooping in the crate and will not go on forever,( thats what I tell myself to keep motivated) your pup is still young. Jack and Mandy sleep in the crate together and Jack had a few accidents in the crate because he was sick and had diarrhea but otherwise he will not poop in the crate. I dont do the pee pad. I only take them outdoors and crate them at night. They have a xpen in the kitchen and trying to get them to bark or use bells to let me know they want to go out. Are you going to eventually train her to go indoors or out??? Hope I was of some help to you :) Verena |
Crate or Pen?? I have tried getting her out in the middle of the night and she wont go....only plays. I am going to train her to just use the pads. I do take her outside, but again, she never goes out there....she is too busy playing. I live in CT and we have so much snow and such cold weather in the winter, that I think it will be easier for all of us if she is just pee pad trained. Do you think letting her sleep in her pen is a bad idea? I should def stick with the crate at night? Thanks for all your help!!! |

I know about those cold winters I am near Canada in upstate NY. Good luck and keep us posted. Verena |
Can you tell I am new at this? I havent put a pad in her crate....is that something that I should do? I never thought of that. She doesnt seem to mind her crate....she just poops in it :) As for her pen, it is very safe...she is in a very contained area in the kitchen with her doggie bed at one side and her pee pad at the other. I also had not thought of putting her crate inside the pen with the door open instead of her little bed. Both good suggestions. Thank you so much!! |

Update on Deb Well last night I gave it a shot. I put Deb in her penned area in the kitchen at bed time. I did not put her crate in there, because she is already used to her little bed that is in there during the day. She slept in it all night and never wimpered or cried. She got up at some point and did her business on the pee pad and then went back to sleep. I am wondering if there is even a need for her crate at all unless we are traveling. You are right, I do want her to eventually have the run of the house and when she is not in her pen, I keep the door to it open so that she can get to her pee pad when she needs it. She is doing really well. I am so new at this, that I want to make sure it makes sense to do it the way that I am doing it...so I dont have issues with her in the future. What does everyone think??? :animal36 |
If she feels better in the penned area , I would let her there . I only get mine used to the crate only for travel . They have an xpen . |
Thank you Gazou, I am glad to hear that your baby sleeps in a pen too. It's not that Deb doesnt like her crate, its just that she poops in it. This way, in the pen she poops on her pad and then she has a clean bed to go back to. I am going to continue putting her in the pen at night and see how she does. How old is your baby? She is beautiful!! |
Sounds like Deb is doing really well with the pee pad thing to be 12 wks. I am having a hard time with Ciera, she will poop on the pad but she will pee all around it. I have her in a xpen too, when I try to let her out just in the kitchen or in the living room where we are at and leave the door open to her xpen she will NOT go back to the pad, she goes in the floor where ever she is at!! I can't figure out how to make her go to it when she is out. |
Have you tried keeping her on a leash in the house when you have her out of the pen? That way you can keep a really close eye on her. When she starts to go...immediatly say NO and pick her up and take her to the pad.....then give her a very short lead to circle around and finish what she started!! That is what my breeder told me and it seems to be working....also, I know a lot of people will disagree with this, but I have a second pad out for her too. It is in the living room so that when she is far away from her pen (far to her is one room away) she has a designated area to go in and sometimes I think that she prefers not to go back into her pen when she is having her "freedom" time. As each day passes she uses the pad in the living room less frequently but she knows it is there. It only took us about a week of keeping her on the leash in the house before she started looking for the pad on her own. By the way, I noticed you are in Morristown, TN...I used to live in Knoxville!! How old is your yorkie?? :animal36 |

Yeah, we just moved here Jan 1st. We are from Virginia originally, my husband got a job down here so that is why we moved. Ciera is 13 wks old. Thanks for the tip, I will have to try the leash in the house thing. She will actually cry to get out of her xpen and when we let her out, she goes straight to the carpet in the living room and pees. GRRR Where in Knoxville did you live? How come you to move to CT? |
Ciera and Deb are the same age (I said she was 12 weeks last night but then realized I was wrong....today is her 13 week birthday :) ) If she is going the minute you let her out of the pen, try putting her leash on her immediatly and keeping her on the pad before you let her out! When I first brought Deb home, she would be sooooo excited when I first let her out of her crate or pen that she would not pee...she would be trying to climb up my leg instead of walking on her leash. Over the last few weeks she has calmed down some when I first get her out, she seems to know that once she goes, she gets to roam around the house :) Keep me posted on how Ciera is doing! I used to live in North Knoxville and went to school at UT. Do you like TN? We went to Florida after 10 years in Knoxville. My x-husband's job took us there. We moved to CT when my kids and I wanted a fresh start after my divorce. I am single mom with 3 kids and now a puppy :) We all love her very much!! |
Ciera was 13wks Wednesday. How cool! Wish you were still in Knoxville, we could have a playdate. We like it ok, the worst is all our family live in Virginia, and we don't really know anyone here so it gets pretty boring. I am a stay at home mom to Ciera and a 14mth old (as of today) boy. I will def. try that with her though. If I just try and leave her in her xpen she barks and whines to no avail. Really kills me when Hunter is trying to take a nap, and I tell her to hush and she barks that much more, so finally I have to let her out to get her to stop. |
Ciera is 2 days older than Deb :) It is really too bad they couldn't be playmates! We still have a lot of family in Knoxville. Next time we come, maybe we could have a play date!!! You must have your hands full with a baby and a baby puppy!!! I would be the same way....let Ciera out to keep her from waking napping children!! Once she is housebroken you will be able to let her roam a little more freely! I am still very cautious when Deb is out of her pen, because I am not convinced that she is not going to pee on the carpet :) She also likes to chew things....so that keeps me busy when she is out of the pen!! |
I tell my husband that I feel like I am running a daycare....lol It does keep me very busy with the two of them (and then 3 when he gets home from work) :p But we will def have to have a play date when you come in. How old are your 3 children? Is this your first yorkie? I also have a 2 year old Golden Retriever. |
This is my first Yorkie...and I am so totally in love with her. I have actually thought about getting another one...I must be insane!!! I just think two of them would be so much fun!! My kids are 13, 10, and 9!! They keep me very busy too!!! |
I have 7 adults and teenagers so someone is always in some stage of being trained. Despite what people say aboout dogs not pooping in their bed a Yorkie will poop in its own bed and sleep in it. I set up 6 sections of the 8 section wire Xpen. I put water, bed, papers and they get a few treats of another brand of dog food (BTW, that is what I use as treats all time is different brand of cheap food...Iams daily dental does it for us) Everyone flies in and we don't hear a sound til they hear us in the morning. One little choc guy sleeps with us cause he does not know how little he is and gets in the middle of the morning exercises. Use the pen, make it as small as you want by doubling it back on itself, and gradually you might get her back in her crate if that is your goal..the pens are so great to travel with!! |
The play/exercise pen I bought for Harley is really nifty bc I can attach his crate opening to the door opening of his play pen. I do that during the day so he has the choice of napping in his crate or playing/eating out in his play pen. If you can do that I would try that. That way she has a chance to walk out of her crate to poop in the night. Now if she still poops in her crate even while she has the opportunity to go on her pee pee pad then you have a problem I have no answer for! I hope this helps! Good luck! :D |
Pooping in the crate is a sign that the crate is too large. My "Puppies for Dummies" book said that this is the number one sign that you have a crate too large for your puppy. But your pup is young. I would fully expect this to go away as your pup grows into the crate and gets better control of body functions. Here's a great page on Crate Training info: Quote:

What an excellent link! Thank you! I have become increasingly frustrated over the last few days with the housebreaking thing. Deb had been doing so well in her penned area, but the last 3 days she has not done well at all. She takes her pee pad and crumples it in the corner and then pees and poops everywhere but on the pad. She does this both during the day and at night. I think that maybe she has too much room in there. I dont want to be inconsistant with her, but am afraid I gave up on the crate too soon. Her crate is the one that she arrived in, but maybe it is too big. Can anyone tell me what dimensions would be good for a 2lb Yorkie? I appreciate all the help!!! This is harder than pottie training my kids!!! |
A crate should only be so large that the puppy can stand, turn about, and lay again. No larger. Sounds messed up? It's HOME for a puppy! Few pups will poop so that they have to lay in it. They find that gross, and Yorkies in particular are hygenic dogs in my opinion. If it's possible, you may consider doing out-door potty training if the pads are simply not working. Chewey was supposedly "pad-trained" when I got him. The results were exactly like I have read a hundred others report on here: Poops on it (most of the time), pees near it. Chewey reminded me of a cat in so many ways, particularly his hygenic bent, so I thought perhaps he felt gross with the pads. I changed him to out-door training. Worked very well for me. I have a thread on here where I really detailed the process I used. It's something to consider. As for pad-training, there's little I can offer you. Good luck! |
How do I find this thread that you mentioned? You seem very knowlegable!! I have tried taking her outside, but she is more interested in chasing bees and moths to worry about going potty!! Do you think I should keep her in her new kennel (I bought a smaller one tonight) both at night and during the day when I am not home until we get this potty thing under control? She has been staying in her penned area during the day? I really appreciate any advice you can give!! |
Hamoth is correct. your baby is tiny. i would find the smallest crate with a divider so you can adjust it with you baby. i wouldn't put a pee pad in there. to me it encourages them to use it .....especially if you using the same pads somewhere else in the house for training. my boy uses pads and outdoors. he took a while getting the pad down but i was consistent with it and soon he got it down. i crate at night only b/c i work in the day. i take him out first thing in the morning and thats how we started the outside part and he just caught on. hope this helps patients is the key( and lots of paper towels and spray). :D |
I bought the tiniest crate I could find tonight. I am going to put Deb to sleep in it tonight. You said you crate at night...what do you do during the day? Is your baby crated or in an enclosed area? I really appreciate all the tips!!! |

THat is what I do too. Deb is in a pen during the day with the pee pads. I just didnt know if for a few weeks it made more sense to keep her in the kennel during the day until she grasps the pee pad concept. As you can see, I am doubting all the things I have been doing and am just not sure where to go from here. I think I have been confusing my poor baby by trying to pee pad train her and train her outside at the same time. I think I will stick to the pee pads for now. What do you think? |
in the day i keep him in our laundry room with 2 babygates. he has his bed, food and water and i have a cardboard box with 2 pee pads. there small dogs so its enough room for him to walk around. my neighbor leaves hers in the bathroom with a baby gate. all depends on you. i've heard horror stories about x-pens and hangings and my boy didnt like a playpen i tried to use at first so laundry room works great.... try pads first then slowly introduce outside...worked for me |
