Washing Towels and Blankets What is the best way to wash towels and blankets that have been soiled with pee or poo. We're crate training our 13 week old and she does very well, but sometimes if we don't wake up early enough or we don't walk her long enough at night she'll pee on the towel we put in the crate. Sometime she'll even pee on her blanket that we put in the xpen. I know her bladder is still small so we're being patient, but I wanted some advice on cleaning the towels and blankets, because I think she might still smell some of her pee/poo. I used to just rinse them out and then throw them in the washing machine with detergent. Now I bleach them and then wash. From some things that I read here bleach wont get everything out. Is there anything else i should use (nature's miracle/oxy clean)? I use nature's miracle to clean anything that she pees on (crate/floor/etc..) |
i use reguloar detergent to wash charlie's things including bed and stuff animals |
Here's a thread addressing a similar problem/query. It's an easy, short read. :) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/tra...over-help.html Personally, I like taking this kind of thing to the public laundromat to make use of their industrial strength washer/dryers as opposed to using the ones I use at home for the people stuff. I have experienced skin irritations to what I thought should have been a good cleaning coming from things I've washed after washing something else in a different cycle. I suppose if you always use bleach, it would clean out your washer for you for the next round. I've also noticed that some laundromats have machines that don't work as well as others. :p I only do this once every so many months for very specific things. LOL. |
We use the washable potty pads, as the disposables are expensive and most are not ecologically sound. We just wash them in the machine on warm to hot ,and use tide. We pre-soak the pads to get out anything visible, and then use tide and a color safe bleach as the pads are colored fabric. This works well. If you get squeamish about putting your clothes in after, just do an empty wash with bleach and tide in the machine. That cleans out the entire machine. Good luck:) |
I always just used regular detergent to wash Tyke's blankets when he was in that stage. i also have some detergent that you buy in wal-mart in the hunting section. (this is my husband's because he deer hunts) Well it takes all smells out of clothes. so if you want to try it you could. i've also used baking soda with my detergent and that works well. |

I wash the boys stuff on the sanatize cycle, use Nature's Miracle for washing machines & Cheer (no dies, no frag) |
We use the washer for our dirty laundry collection just for the dog. His soiled items go into the washer immediately after they've been rinsed off (all the #2 goes into the trash or toilet.) and sprayed with nature's miracle which keeps it from smelling. Once we have a full load (or on laundry day, whichever is first), the dog's laundry is washed first in Hot/Hot water. I used half as much detergent as the bottle calls for since it's usually a small load. (I use liquid Tide Free.) I also add about 1/4 cup baking soda. From there his laundry goes into the dryer. I don't use dryer sheets since they're toxic to dogs and I've been known to forget to fish them off of his laundry before putting them in his crate or pen. Usually I wash his laundry about once a week and have enough for a small to medium load. |
